    Location

Our community-based sea turtle conservation project is located on the spectacular Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica—one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The project monitors 8km of active sea turtle nesting beaches just outside of the Corcovado National Park, that holds 2.5% of the entire world's biodiversity. We work on these beaches for 10 months out of the year, collecting valuable data on the nesting populations and their nests.

While this region is rich in natural beauty and wildlife, local communities often face economic challenges due to its remote location and look to natural resources for income and survival. At COPROT, we aim to address this by creating meaningful, sustainable alternatives. We offer training and employment opportunities that build skills, promote conservation, and strengthen community resilience.

    About the Program

Founded in 2018, COPROT is a grassroots initiative dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles while supporting local communities. We’re looking for passionate, motivated, and adaptable individuals who want to make a tangible impact in a rural, developing area of Costa Rica.

Living conditions at camp are simple, and our diet is primarily vegetarian. Volunteers should be comfortable with a basic lifestyle and eager to fully immerse themselves in nature and community life.

    Who Can Join

No prior experience is required—just a genuine interest in conservation, sustainability, and hands-on fieldwork. We welcome volunteers who are:

    • Enthusiastic about wildlife conservation and sea turtles

    • Interested in sustainable off-grid living

    • Ready to support base camp sustainability initiatives

    • Excited to work closely with nature and local community members

    What You’ll Be Doing

As a volunteer, you’ll take part in vital sea turtle monitoring activities, including:

    • Morning or night patrols (3–7 hours) to collect data on nesting females

    • Nest protection, hatchling releases, and excavation of hatched nests

    • Supporting sustainable tourism by educating and guiding visitors

    • Contributing to conservation education and community outreach

    • Assisting with other environmental projects when needed during the day (beach cleans, camp gardening, community projects)

Our beaches are among the most important turtle nesting sites in the region, with nearly 7,000 nests recorded annually. Every volunteer plays a role in protecting as many of these as possible and ensuring accurate data collection to support long-term conservation goals.

Sea turtle work can be physically demanding—expect long walks on soft sand, irregular sleep schedules, and lots of early mornings and late nights. That said, you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable sunrises, starlit skies, and the magic of witnessing nature up close every day.

    Our Ethos

COPROT is not a vacation destination—it’s a conservation station. We’re here to work hard, learn, and grow together while caring for the environment and each other.

We are proud to be a Positive Vibes Organization 😄
This means we encourage everyone to bring their best energy, treat fellow volunteers and community members with kindness and respect, and contribute to a supportive, inclusive, and uplifting atmosphere.

If you’re ready for an immersive, impactful, and unforgettable experience—COPROT is the project for you.

Our days are highly varied depending on the needs of the project, so we really appreciate flexibility when it comes to the daily tasks.

We also have yoga mats that can be used for yoga or doing some exercise. Volunteers are more than welcome to get creative and think of fun things to do together. Additionally, there are some shared books available to read on our bookshelves.

We normally work very hard on the project, but there’s still always plenty of time to relax and explore. There are a lot of different activities around the Osa Península that can be arranged in advance and may have discounts for volunteers. Here you have a list of some of these activities (these prices are just for guidance and may be subject to change) and also an example of how your week could be in the last page:

    - Whale and dolphin tour

    - Waterfall hike

    - Guided gold-mining tour

    Indkvartering

Since early 2019, we’ve been developing our base camp just a few hundred meters from the entrance to Playa Río Oro, nestled in a stunning, nature-immersed location just a few kilometers away from the Corcovado National Park - one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Our camp is built with sustainability at its core—using primarily natural and upcycled materials to minimize our environmental footprint. Much of the wood and other building supplies have been repurposed to create our facilities in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.

Volunteers are housed in an open-air, mixed dormitory located on the second floor of our two-story rancho. Each bunk bed is equipped with a mosquito net, and the elevated space enjoys a pleasant, natural breeze throughout the day and night. The ocean is close enough to hear from your bed :)

The Rio Oro base camp has simple but funcional facilities, including western-style toilets, showers, and a large, inviting communal kitchen with a panoramic view of the garden. All buildings are constructed with a focus on low-impact design, using sustainable or reclaimed materials wherever possible. A simple solar system provides basic power for lighting, a fridge and charging devices; however, energy availability depends on weather conditions and camp occupancy. We ask all guests to be mindful of power usage and bring backup options if needed.

We have a relatively good WiFi service available, but weather conditions can affect reliability. Some cell signal is also available in certain areas with a Kolbi SIM card or good international provider.

Environmental stewardship is central to our mission. We are committed to reducing waste and aim to become a zero-waste facility.. All waste must be sorted—reused, recycled, or returned to Puerto Jiménez. Please consider this when preparing for your trip. Avoid bringing items that generate excess waste, and plan to either dispose of bulky waste (e.g., old shoes, batteries, plastic containers) before arrival or take them back with you upon departure. To support our conservation goals, we also encourage all guests to bring biodegradable soaps and shampoos, and to minimize the use of single-use plastics during their stay.

    Mad og drikkevarer

We provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks! All of our food is vegetarian/vegan. Some examples include:

    Breakfast:
    • oatmeal with fresh fruit and peanut butter
    • pinto beans and rice with fresh/pan fried vegetables
    Lunch/dinner:
    • vegetable curry with rice/naan bread
    •  bean chili with rice and lettuce
    • pasta with lentil bolognese
    • minestrone soup with veggies, beans and pasta
    Snacks:
    • fresh cut up fruit (papaya, pineapple, starfruit, oranges, grapefruit)
    • fresh cut up vegetables (red bell peppers, carrots)
    • salty crackers
