    Om programmet

As a Sri Lanka turtle conservation volunteer, you will play an essential role in protecting and rehabilitating sea turtles while also supporting community development projects. With many turtle species at risk of extinction, conservation efforts are more crucial than ever. By volunteering, you'll raise awareness about plastic pollution, care for injured or disabled turtles, and help release baby turtles back into the wild, offering them a safe future away from natural threats and poaching.

BACKGROUND TO THE TURTLE CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Sri Lanka is home to five sea turtle species: the Green Turtle, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, and Leatherback. The Green Turtle is the most commonly encountered species, while the Loggerhead is the rarest, usually found in the East Coast of the U.S. The Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, and Leatherback are critically endangered due to overhunting and other human activities. In Ambalangoda, a fishing hub, many turtles are caught in nets, and some lose limbs, making rehabilitation essential.

The biggest threat to sea turtles is plastic pollution, with millions of microplastics, straws, and bottles polluting the oceans. Volunteers will play a key role in combating this environmental disaster and helping protect marine life.

Volunteering in Sri Lanka provides an incredible opportunity to help these incredible creatures while immersing yourself in the natural beauty and culture of the island.

    TURTLE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLES

    Ambalangoda Turtle Conservation Sanctuary
At this sanctuary, volunteers will assist in the rehabilitation of disabled turtles and support efforts to protect and release healthy turtles back into the wild. The sanctuary also works to protect turtle eggs from poaching. Volunteers will learn how to properly nest turtle eggs, care for turtles, and safely release hatchlings into the sea.

    Beach Cleanups
A key part of your role as a turtle conservation volunteer is maintaining safe beaches for turtle nesting. Volunteers will be involved in regular beach cleanups, removing litter and dangerous debris that could harm turtles. In an effort to combat plastic pollution, volunteers will work toward the goal of collecting 200 kilograms of waste from the beaches each day.

Turtle Hatchery & Baby Turtle Release
Volunteers will help care for turtle eggs that have been moved to a safe hatchery. This is crucial as turtle eggs are often stolen by poachers or threatened by human activity, such as hotel developments. Volunteers will assist in nesting, monitoring, and releasing baby turtles, ensuring they have a safe start in life. The hatchery operates in compliance with national wildlife guidelines, offering a secure environment for turtle conservation.

By volunteering on this project, you will not only contribute to the survival of these endangered creatures but also support vital environmental conservation efforts.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING IN SRI LANKA

    Top Destination

Sri Lanka is often regarded as one of the best volunteer destinations due to the exceptional local support, great value for money, and the overall experience in Ambalangoda. The local team goes above and beyond to ensure that every volunteer has an unforgettable experience, which is reflected in the positive feedback received. This makes it an ideal choice for first-time travellers seeking extra support, a variety of organised weekend trips, and the opportunity to participate in meaningful local initiatives in an exotic setting.

    Return Airport Transfer

Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging transfers to the airport or other destinations from the volunteer accommodation. It’s more flexible to make these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka, as travel plans can change, and you might be able to coordinate with others on similar flight schedules. The cost will vary depending on your transport method and final destination, and if you’re traveling with other participants, it can often be shared. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for your airport transfer, as while they may be cheaper, they are less convenient and pose additional safety risks.

    Weekends

Weekends in Sri Lanka are free, allowing you to relax or explore the country. Most participants take this opportunity to travel, while others enjoy downtime at the volunteer accommodation. We provide a Sri Lanka Weekend Travel Guide with top tips for making the most of your weekends. Additionally, before you depart for Sri Lanka, you can sign up for one of our exciting weekend trips, including the Adventure Hill & Country Trip, the Cultural Triangle & Elephants Trip, and the Maldives Chill Out Trip. These trips run every month, giving you plenty of chances to join in. Your project work is from Monday to Friday, so you’ll have plenty of time to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty and culture.

    Project Flexibility

This volunteer project operates in the mornings, giving you the opportunity to participate in teaching projects during the afternoon. A minimum commitment of one week is required for each project, and you can finalize these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka. There are no additional costs, and we always welcome extra support for the community-based projects.

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL WORK DAY

As a Sri Lanka turtle conservation volunteer, you will spend your days working along the beach, caring for rescued sea turtles and helping maintain a safe environment for them. Your tasks will include conducting beach cleanups to ensure the safety of turtle nests and protecting their habitats. The volunteer program runs Monday to Friday from 9am to 12pm, with shorter sessions on beach cleanup days due to the heat and humidity. You’ll travel to the project site by tuk-tuk or minibus, which takes about 15 minutes.

    Typical duties include:

    • Preparing fresh food and assisting with feeding
    • Cleaning the project area and nearby beach
    • Maintaining the nesting areas
    • Participating in regular beach patrols and cleanups
    • Cleaning and refilling turtle tanks
    • Assisting with medication and shell cleaning
    • Counting and burying turtle eggs safely
    • Designing educational boards for the sanctuary
    • Participating in marine conservation sessions
    • Releasing hatchlings into the sea

You will work closely with local staff to understand your tasks and expectations, participating in both team and individual roles. As part of the program, you’ll also help combat plastic pollution by cleaning beaches where turtles lay their eggs. While beach cleanup may seem mundane, its importance cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts turtle nesting. The efforts of volunteers are highly valued by the Wildlife Department, and it's common to collect up to 20 bags of litter during a single cleanup.

Volunteers are based in Ambalangoda, a lively town on the South West Coast of Sri Lanka, just a 5-minute tuk tuk ride from the beach. The town has all the amenities you might need, including banks, hospitals, shops, and a popular ice cream shop. Ambalangoda also features a central bus and train station, offering excellent transport links to major destinations.

Traditionally a fishing community, Ambalangoda is also famous as the main production center for demonic wooden masks. These masks, once worn by performers in Kolam and other southern Sri Lankan dances, are now primarily sold as souvenirs. Many local families hang a mask on their front doors to ward off evil spirits.

Afhentning i lufthavnen i Bandaranaike International Airport

You should arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) on the Saturday. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you to the Volunteer House in Ambalangoda where you can relax and settle in. This journey takes around 2 hours.

    Indkvartering

During your time on the Sri Lanka volunteer program, you will live in our Volunteer House just outside of central Ambalangoda, in a peaceful part of town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is just a 10 minute tuk-tuk journey into the main town, where you can find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants. You’ll be living with other PMGY volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way!

The accommodation is basic but comfortable and clean, fitting up to 10 people per room in single-sex bedrooms with bunk beds. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and bed linen. You will have cupboard space to store clothes and accessories as well as a personal locker to store your valuables. However, volunteers are still encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Sri Lanka.

The bathrooms are shared, each with a shower and western style toilet. The water is cold but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Sri Lanka, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

The house has free Wi-Fi available and a communal area for international volunteers to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English. There is also a refrigerator to store any items you need to keep chilled. A member of our local team will also live at the house. This ensures you have round the clock support and security.

We will transport you via tuk-tuk or private car to and from your volunteer placement, which is usually between 5-30 minutes away from the house. This service is included in your Program Fee.

During our busiest months you may be placed at alternative accommodation. For instance, you could be placed in one of our secondary Volunteer Houses.

    Mad og drikkevarer

You will be served three meals per day at the Volunteer House. Most meals are traditional Sri Lankan dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Sri Lankan cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that blends Sri Lanka cuisine with Western cuisine so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day! Below is an example of the meals we serve our volunteers:

Breakfast – Egg, toast, fruit with tea.
Lunch – Dhal and spinach curry, poppadums, paprika tofu and rice.
Dinner – Mixed vegetable noodles, tomato curry, omelette and poppadoms.

All meals are freshly prepared each day. If you fancy some western comforts, you will find plenty of restaurants serving western meals in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa is a 20 minute journey from Ambalangoda and the cost to get there by tuk tuk is around £3 per way. This is a popular place that volunteers go to in the evening, as it is a trendy backpackers town.

    * Please inform us in your application if you have any dietary requirements. Couples, families and older volunteers will be accommodated to suit their needs.
