About the Program: Bali Wildlife & Conservation Volunteers

Join the Bali Wildlife & Conservation Program and make a meaningful impact by supporting a variety of animal species and helping restore key environments like mangrove forests. As a volunteer, you'll contribute to the wellbeing of animals at a wildlife rehabilitation center, get involved in sustainability initiatives, fight plastic pollution, and raise awareness within local communities.

Background to the Wildlife & Environmental Program

Indonesia is home to hundreds of unique animal species, many of which are displaced due to deforestation caused by industries like palm oil and rubber production. Currently, there are only seven wildlife centers across the country dedicated to rehabilitating and caring for these animals. The PMGY Bali program offers volunteers a chance to join these vital efforts and gain firsthand experience in wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

Volunteers will work with dedicated local teams to care for rescued animals and help protect and restore Bali’s fragile ecosystems. You'll gain valuable experience across multiple conservation projects and learn about a range of environmental topics.

    Wildlife & Environmental Volunteer Placements

    Wildlife Rescue Centre:

At the wildlife rescue center, you'll care for animals that have been victims of poaching and illegal trafficking. These include primates, birds, and other wildlife that were kept as pets or for entertainment in illegal markets. The focus is on their rehabilitation, with the goal of releasing those that are healthy and able to survive in the wild. However, some animals, due to trauma or lack of survival skills, may need lifelong care.

The center houses a variety of animals, including saltwater crocodiles, sea eagles, sun bears, and more. Volunteers assist with daily care, enrichment activities, and maintaining suitable enclosures, ensuring each animal has the best quality of life possible.

Beach Cleanups & Plastic Pollution Awareness

Plastic pollution is a growing global crisis, and Bali is no exception. Volunteers participate in regular beach and forest cleanups to remove waste, particularly single-use plastics like straws, which take hundreds of years to decompose. Volunteers also educate locals about recycling and waste disposal practices, aiming to foster long-term environmental consciousness and encourage sustainable habits within the community.

    Mangrove Conservation:

Mangrove forests play a critical role in protecting coastlines from rising sea levels and storm surges, particularly in Bali. Volunteers work alongside local communities to restore and protect mangrove habitats, planting new trees, picking up litter, and promoting environmental education. This initiative not only helps safeguard Bali’s coastlines but also raises awareness of global environmental issues.

AREC Centre – Animal Rehabilitation & Education:

The AREC Centre houses domestic animals awaiting adoption, as well as provides educational programs on sustainable farming and healthy lifestyles. Volunteers assist with animal care, enrichment, and training, while also helping cultivate plants and fruits for the local community. It's a fantastic opportunity to support both animal welfare and sustainable agriculture.

Other Considerations for Volunteering with Wildlife in Bali

    Return Airport Transfer

Please note that the return airport transfer is not included in the program fee. Most participants use a rideshare app or private taxi for transport. Costs vary depending on your chosen method and final destination.

    A Popular Holiday Destination

Bali is a major tourist destination, which means that while it offers fantastic opportunities to explore, the volunteer experience may feel less immersive compared to more developing locations like Ghana, Tanzania, or India. If your priority is travel and cultural exploration, Bali could be ideal for a shorter volunteer program. However, for a more hands-on conservation experience, consider alternative PMGY programs in locations like Thailand, Greece, or South Africa.

    Weekends Free for Travel

The volunteer program runs from Monday to Thursday, leaving your weekends (Friday-Sunday) free. Many volunteers use this time to explore Bali’s stunning landscapes and culture. You can also sign up for weekend trips, such as the Gili Paradise Island trip or the Ubud Trip, both offered monthly.

Typical Day: Your Volunteer Role & Work Schedule

As a wildlife volunteer in Bali, you’ll have the opportunity to rotate across various projects, gaining a broad understanding of how volunteers can contribute to conservation and animal welfare efforts. Each day’s activities will vary depending on the specific project, and you’ll work alongside local staff members who bring years of expertise to their roles.

    Transportation:
All transport to and from the project sites is included in your program fee. The Beach Cleanups and AREC Centre are about 20 minutes away by bemo (local transport), while the Mangrove Restoration project is around an hour away by private car. The Wildlife Rescue Centre is just 5 minutes away by bemo.

    Daily Work Hours:
Volunteers typically work 3-5 hours per day, Monday through Thursday. While Friday is optional, it’s encouraged for those who want to make the most of their time in Bali.

Typical Activities for Bali Wildlife Volunteers

    1. Feeding - You’ll help prepare and serve meals for the animals based on their species and the time of year. For example, crocodiles are fed twice a week with chicken or duck, while monkeys are fed daily with fresh fruits. Volunteers will be involved in cutting and preparing the food, learning about the nutritional needs of each species and the importance of a balanced diet for their rehabilitation.

    2. Enrichment - Many of the animals at the rescue centre are endangered and have suffered from habitat loss or mistreatment in the illegal wildlife trade. These experiences can make them stressed, irritable, or withdrawn. As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in enriching their lives by encouraging natural behaviours such as foraging, playing, and socializing. Over time, your interactions may help the animals regain trust in humans, leading to improved well-being and a more positive outlook.

    3. Enclosure Cleaning - The animal enclosures are designed based on veterinarian assessments, tailored to the needs of each species. You may find some enclosures to be relatively small, as certain animals feel safer in more confined spaces, especially if they’ve suffered trauma. Volunteers will assist in cleaning the enclosures and maintaining them, including tasks such as trimming overgrown vegetation around the crocodile enclosures or replacing rotting branches and chains in bird enclosures. If you’re comfortable, you may even have the chance to clean and make repairs while the animals fly or roam freely around you.

    4. Maintenance - As a volunteer, you’ll contribute to the general upkeep of the rescue centre. This may involve fixing gates, reinforcing fencing, cleaning up the grounds, or repairing habitats. The centre operates with limited funding, so your support will help improve the environment for both the animals and the staff. Volunteers are also actively involved in Beach Cleanups, collecting trash and debris from Bali’s beaches and forests to protect the island’s natural beauty and prevent further harm to wildlife.

    5. Beach Cleanups - Plastic pollution is a major environmental challenge in Bali. Volunteers help clean the beaches and forests, collecting trash and ensuring proper disposal and recycling. This vital work not only contributes to preserving Bali’s coastlines but also raises awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and local wildlife.

    Free-time Activities in Bali

Bali's volunteer programs are based in the vibrant town of Tabanan, a charming and bustling city with deep cultural roots. Nestled in the heart of Bali, Tabanan offers the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, providing a lively yet authentic experience for volunteers.

Explore Tabanan: With a population of over 350,000, including around 10,000 in the city center, Tabanan is a hub of activity. From 4 p.m. to midnight, the town comes alive with an exciting night market where you can sample local Balinese delicacies, shop for handmade jewelry and traditional clothing, and immerse yourself in the rich local culture. Tabanan is known as the "rice bowl of Bali" for its lush rice fields, which play a vital role in the island’s agricultural industry.

For a deeper dive into Bali’s agricultural heritage, the Subak Museum is a must-see. It showcases the Subak system, an ancient, unmechanized irrigation method that has been in use since AD 600 and continues to shape Bali’s landscape today.

Weekend Travel Opportunities: Participants typically volunteer Monday through Thursday, leaving the weekends free for relaxation or exploration. Many volunteers find that the opportunity to travel and discover more of Bali is a highlight of their experience. Whether you want to relax on pristine beaches, trek through lush jungles, or visit sacred temples, the island offers endless opportunities for adventure and cultural immersion.

Our local team can help arrange transport, accommodation, and activities for your weekend travels. However, please note that these arrangements are usually independent of the core volunteer program. We strongly encourage volunteers to take advantage of these travel opportunities, as they will enrich your overall experience in Bali.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you straight to the Volunteer House in Tabanan where you can relax and settle

    Indkvartering

    Volunteer House

During your time on the Bali volunteer program you will live in one of our Volunteer Houses, which are located in Tabanan. Here you will find local restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs. Tabanan is a more traditional town, so you won’t find many other tourists around. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way.

The accommodation is basic but comfortable with free Wi-Fi. Each room has bunk beds with up to 8 people per room in same-sex rooms. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and their own mosquito net or curtains (to avoid the mosquitos) and bed linen. Bathrooms are shared, with a shower and western style toilet. The water is often cold, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Bali, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

We encourage you to bring some small padlocks and/or store any valuables within the lockers provided within the volunteer accommodation, however, volunteers are encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Bali. There will also be fridge space available for volunteers to store any items they need to keep chilled.

International volunteers have several communal spaces to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English.

The Volunteer House is located right next to where our local team live. Although volunteers have their own private space there is still the security of living next to our host family who can assist you if need be. It is also a great way to learn more about Balinese culture, get immersed in the local community and practise your new-found language skills!

Some of our projects are within walking distance of our Volunteer House and some are not. We will take you to and from your volunteer placement each day if it is not within walking distance, via minivan or private car, and the cost of this service is included in your Program Fee.

Please note during our busier times of the year we will be running multiple accommodation sites all of which are located in Tabanan. All the Volunteer Houses will provide the core features you would expect but will all have small differences in terms of location, amenities, capacity etc. Due to the popularity of our Bali programs we are unable to take specific requests in terms of the exact property you will be staying in and you are assigned a house on arrival. We are always able to accommodate friends and small groups in the same accommodation.

    Mad og drikkevarer

You will be provided with three freshly prepared meals per day. Most meals are traditional Indonesian dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Balinese cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day.

There is a large choice of restaurants and local warungs (authentic, local food stalls) in Tabanan. The food on offer is traditional Balinese cuisine – typically amazing and mainly vegetarian! There may also be a western option served once or twice every week and there are restaurants serving western food available around a 20 minute walk from the Volunteer House.
