About the program

Embark on a transformative journey by joining us in an exciting opportunity to volunteer at a local Fútbol academy in Costa Rica. Your valuable time and dedication will have a profound positive impact on the development of children and youth, both in their soccer skills and their personal growth.

What sets this project apart is the remarkable chance to make a long-term impact in the short-term. We have been faithfully working in this project for almost 5 years (July 2018 we began) and what started with 18 kids has now grown to over 140 kids from the community! We reinforce and teach values like: respect, team work, responsibility to our community, discipline, and much more both on and off the pitch. Many of our kids face an array of challenges in their families, school, and the socio-economic challenges that lie within. Despite this, we are teaching them to be conquerors and not a product of their surroundings through fútbol. Be part of the solution and join us as we create the next generation of leaders in our community.

Each training session (see our detailed schedule) you will join our team of certified Costa Rican coaches in addition to weekly/daily face-to-face interactions with your hosts Jason & Sarah. Here you will help them setup trainings, assist during the drills, help cleanup after each session, and as needed work 1-on-1 with some players that need more help. Occasionally we ask volunteers who have more experience to even run a training, but this is done on a case to case basis. Our weekday trainings all happen under roof as we rent a local synthetic field. Our weekends are outdoors and optional for you as we know many enjoy exploring on the weekends. We can always accommodate you if you want to do more or less than what is laid out in the schedule. During the onboarding process you can let us know what best suits your time and desires.

Both during your onboarding process (virtual) and in person orientation with our team you can expect a clear and professional outline of your time here. During this process we will detail a “day in the life of a volunteer” and be glad to answer any additional questions. Upon arrival you will receive our welcome packet that has info of our area and program. We do our job with excellence and believe that your time and investment is valuable and deserves our attention. You can expect to be able to quickly get in touch with us in the event of an emergency as we live minutes away from the volunteer house. If you don’t already have WhatsApp please consider getting it, our team manages a volunteer only WhatsApp group to communicate among us in the event of any changes to the schedule or questions you may have. In the 5 years we have been doing this our schedule has changed very little, but from time to time we have to make adjustments due to outlying factors. But we say 99.9999% of the time the schedule stands as is!

We will provide you a suggested packing list before your trip. Obviously don’t forget your boots! We can also give you some guidance in terms of medical care and availability to medicines and medical facilities. From time to time volunteers ask us if we need more equipment, and the answer is always yes. The most simple thing that we always need are quality balls. With so many kids and so many repetitions happening each week they simply don’t last very long. This is not mandatory so you are not under any obligations. Size 3, 4, 5 balls are the ones we use the most.

Time off? No problem. We understand your mission and time here. We simply ask that you communicate when you will not be joining us. We understand the dynamics of international living and furthermore we understand that sometimes you want to just go to the beach! We simply ask to give us a 7 day lead time to let us know of your absence in this way we can make sure our drills and setup needs are covered by others on our team.

You are going to love your new home. Our volunteer house is owned and operated by an amazing Costa Rican couple. You will find it to be your new home away from home in comfort, esthetics, and surrounded in nature . Minutes from one of the most iconic waterfalls in the area and just a hop, skip, and jump away from night life, grocery, medical & pharmacy, restaurants, and of course the pitches we rent for the program. Included in our pictures of this program are a few pictures of our volunteer house.

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Costa Rica. With pristine beaches, verdant jungles, and awe-inspiring waterfalls at your doorstep, adventure awaits at every turn. Whether it's exploring hidden gems or engaging in thrilling outdoor activities, this is an experience like no other.

We sincerely hope you'll consider becoming a part of this extraordinary project, and we eagerly await your response. Together, let's create lasting memories and make a difference in the lives of young individuals in this captivating corner of the world.

Services by The Nikao Foundation

Your program fee encompasses the following:

  • Participation in the local youth fútbol academy (AFU)
  • Lodging (shared, private room available for uncharge aprox. 12%)
  • Airport pickup
  • Uvita pickup

To ensure affordability and provide flexibility for budgeting purposes, our program fee does not include meals. However, rest assured that your new home is equipped with a kitchen, and there are numerous restaurants within walking distance offering an international fusion of cuisine that caters to a wide range of dietary needs.

Above all, your program fee plays a crucial role in driving positive change within the community. This program goes beyond by offering scholarships, supplying equipment, and creating opportunities for local players in underserved communities. By participating, you not only gain a life-changing experience but also contribute to making a lasting impact and paying it forward.

Airport Pickup at Juan Santamaria International Airport

Our program fee includes the convenience of airport pickup! Upon your arrival at the SJO airport, one of our reliable partners will be there to greet you. Upon reaching Uvita, our team will pick you up and transport you to your new home. Depending on your arrival time, we offer the following options:

1. Taxi to the bus station, where we will provide you with a bus ticket.

2. Shared shuttle service directly from the airport to Uvita.

3. If your arrival time falls outside the shuttle and bus schedule, we will assist you in finding accommodation for the night for an additional fee. The next day, our trusted partners will pick you up and ensure your smooth journey to Uvita.

Our hope is that your transition into Costa Rica is easy. Feel free to reach out to us if you need other options in getting to Uvita including private taxis or domestic flights. We can arrange this as well for you for an additional fee ($110-150 on average).

Accommodation

Welcome to your new home, where your comfort and safety are our top priorities. We believe that providing secure and comfortable housing is key to the success of our program. Restful nights are vital for our volunteers as it greatly impacts their experience with us.

Discover the perfect housing options within our program, designed to cater to your preferences and needs. We proudly present two distinct choices, each offering a unique experience that contributes to the local community.

Firstly, we introduce Casa Bahía, centrally situated in the heart of the community. This lodging option embodies simplicity, safety, and cleanliness. The true essence of Casa Bahía lies in the warmth and hospitality of your hosts, Liz & Luis. With over 5 years of collaborative experience on various projects, Liz & Luis bring an exceptional touch to your stay. Beyond the walls of Casa Bahía, you'll find convenient access to grocery stores, restaurants, football pitches, and more, all within a comfortable 5-15 minute walk. Your contribution for lodging directly supports this hardworking family as they pave a new path for their future. While we offer shared space pricing, consider enhancing your experience with a private room at a modest additional cost of approximately 12% per week. To provide you with a clearer picture of these options, we're happy to arrange a video call, showcasing detailed images and videos for your better understanding.

Secondly, presenting Casa Catarata (pictured here in this ad), aptly named the "Waterfall House" in Spanish. This luxurious lodging option provides a slightly extended distance of 10-20 minutes to nearby amenities and your volunteer program placements. Within Casa Catarata, you'll enjoy a range of amenities including private rooms with bathrooms, air conditioning, and the convenience of an on-site restaurant. Your host, David, brings his unique charm and hospitality to enhance your stay. Just like Casa Bahía, all proceeds from lodging directly support David and his family. A highlight of Casa Catarata is its proximity to a mesmerizing waterfall wonderland, a mere 3-minute walk from your doorstep—one of Uvita's iconic gems.

If the idea of walking seems daunting, rest assured, we've got you covered. Our team is readily available to provide comprehensive guidance on renting or purchasing bicycles, electric bikes, or scooters, ensuring your mobility and comfort.

Our program is built upon a foundation of making a significant and multifaceted impact. By participating, you not only embark on a unique journey but also contribute to the growth of a local family. Our warm and wonderful Costa Rican hosts, whether Liz & Luis at Casa Bahía or David at Casa Catarata, are individuals who will undoubtedly capture your heart. Through this experience, you'll forge connections that extend beyond borders, enriching your understanding of cultures and communities.

About the project

Nikao is the Greek word for “overcomer”. We love partnering with those who are struggling, forgotten, and considered the “underdog”.

Meet your organization

Our founders, Jason and Sarah, have dedicated the past two decades of their lives to forging partnerships with resilient individuals in their local community and beyond. Although their primary focus has centered on a small town in Costa Rica, where they currently reside and operate, their unwavering commitment has propelled them to diverse corners of the globe, including North and South America, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Wherever their journey takes them, their compassionate spirits are drawn to those facing adversity. The Nikao Foundation is a conduit to direct vital resources, mobilize volunteers, and foster sustainable solutions within vulnerable communities. This foundation serves as an avenue to extend support to those in need, manifesting their unwavering dedication to uplifting others.

We take a relational and sustainable approach when engaging in collaborative projects. Drawing from our extensive hands-on experience, we have come to recognize the importance of discerning assistance that truly empowers individuals. As we continue to develop projects within our community and extend our reach further, we consistently evaluate what constitutes a healthy endeavor, identify our partners' responsibilities, and strive for excellence in our work.

By choosing to work with us, you can rest assured that tangible resources will be directed towards those who genuinely require support, providing them with a genuine opportunity to progress. Rather than simply offering a handout, we are dedicated to extending a hand up, fostering sustainable and long-term growth. We would be delighted to engage in a discussion about the various opportunities available, provide insights into our ongoing projects, and discuss our present requirements.

We look forward to the prospect of collaborating with you!
