This is your chance to learn first-hand how grapes and olives are grown using traditional and precise farming methods to combat the effects of climate change on crops. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

This is an in-country hands-on internship program with provided shared housing and local team support.

Interns have the opportunity to learn traditional farming coupled with state-of-the-art precision agriculture techniques to combat climate change effects on food production output.

This internship will involve tasks such as planting and maintenance of the vineyard and olive trees: soil preparation, erecting the support structure for the plants, setting irrigation equipment and planting. It is also expected that you may prune and train growing vines, use methods for controlling pests and diseases with regular spraying. During the harvest period you may assist with handpicking grapes/olives or operating light machines/equipment to that are used around the farm. The team is made-up by professional farmers that also use state-of-the-art precision agriculture techniques. The team is also involved with academic projects around Europe, eliminating any language barriers and offering international expertise.

Our agricultural internship program offers agriculture/viticulture & graduates students the opportunity to gain top quality experience interning on the farm. With valuable experience, you’ll develop your skills and understanding of different farming aspects.

Typical day

A typical working week runs from Monday to Friday, with each day beginning at 8am/9am and ending around 5pm/6pm. During this time, you will take part in a combination of the activities found below:

  • Planting and maintenance of the vineyard and olive trees
  • Soil preparation
  • Erecting the support structure for the plants
  • Acquiring data from the installed precision agriculture sensing system
  • Maintenance of the facilities
  • Setting irrigation equipment and planting
  • Prune and train growing vines
  • Use methods for controlling pests and diseases with regular spraying
  • Handpick grapes/olives or operating light machines/equipment

Free-time activities

The placement takes place at Kissamos port town, outside the vibrant city of Chania where many cultural events and activities take place. You have the chance to explore the historical sites of Crete or swim in the beaches around it. During your weekends you can travel to nearby cities, towns or take the ferry to one of the hundreds of picturesque islands.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (fluently)
Education Requirements
At least one year of undergraduate study completed, with a relevant scientific major such as agriculture, viticulture etc. at College level
Required Documents
CV, Passport copy, Profile Photo, Criminal Background Check and Vaccination Certificate
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
Interns must have a genuine interest in agriculture and commitment to hands-on work at the farm.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:00 - 16:00

Airport Pickup at Chania International Airport

Internships start on Mondays and interns have a choice to participate to a program between a minimum of 2 weeks or up to a maximum of 24 weeks .

For this program the participants need to be physically fit and able to undertake manual labor, enjoy practical activities, work quickly and reliably  both as part of a team and independently, have good oral and written communication skills, be safety aware.

The program fee includes a free airport pickup on the Sunday before the Monday start date. To qualify for the free pickup interns are required to arrive between 9am-6pm.At the airport interns will be welcomed and transferred to their housing. For interns arriving at an earlier date, a pickup maybe provided if requested and subject to availability. The farm & accommodation are located at the quiet port town of Kissamos, 30′ drive from beautiful Chania on the island of Crete in Greece.

Adequate information about the location and hosting institution will be sent before arrival. It includes information about the place, local culture, rules, emergency contact numbers and the local team.

Accommodation
The accommodation is fully furnished (single or double beds), with WiFi, shared with 1-6 other same-sex interns. The last night of the accommodation is Friday night of the final week, leaving interns free to depart on Saturday. Extra nights of accommodation or private apartments can be arranged in advance, if requested and subject to availability.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Chania International Airport (CHQ) in Chania. We assist you to find cheap flights to Greece.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Greece provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Greece you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Greece.
