Volunteer at animal shelters and give your love and care to animals that have been abandoned or abused by their owners and are looking for a new home. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 14+
Wheel Chairs

Volunteers working at animal shelters and animal sanctuaries will have many different tasks, such as cleaning shelters, feeding animals, walking dogs and cats and assisting in the rehabilitation of traumatized animals. You can also participate in efforts to control stray animal overcrowding during your time at a cat and dog rescue center. Due to the amount of work it takes to keep the program running, help from volunteers is always greatly appreciated. This is also a great opportunity for volunteers any age who are passionate about animals and want to spend time volunteering at an animal shelter.

Many families do not have the knowledge of animal welfare, especially in food. This is why it is so important to educate families who would like to have an animal as a family member. Animals are only mediated when the family has the right environment for pets.

Typical day

The project is located on the beautiful Atlantic coast of Bilbao.

Volunteer tasks may include: Caring for stray dogs and cats (grooming, taking dogs for walks), cleaning cages, administering medications, supporting sterilization procedures, assisting in rescue operations, distributing food for animals on the street , PR and work, maintain websites, help raise funds, etc. Before starting your volunteer project, you will receive an orientation from our local staff. Staff who run this kind of organizations are very happy to welcome volunteers from all over the world. Usually you will be in the program with other volunteers. There are morning and afternoon schedules Be flexible. So you will have time to enjoy your afternoon on the beach. This program allows you to rescue and work with abandoned dogs and cats and pets in general while helping them find a new home.

Daily tasks can include: Feed and walk the animals,  Cleaning of cages and equipment,  Medication administration and support with sterilization procedures. Help with rescue operations where animals are brought from the street. Food distribution for street animals Help with public relations and educational work. Support in the adoption process During your free time you can go to the beach. You can enjoy activities like hiking, climbing, trekking, horse riding, relaxing on the beach, etc. Bilbao has excellent surf spots. The water sports activities are closely related to the project.

After the initial orientation, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift at your placement and will work for max 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the project that you are participating on - some placements run in the afternoon and volunteers on these placements will have the morning free. You may therefore plan daily activities which could include sightseeing, shopping or taking Spanish  language lessons.
