Age 18+
Peru has a very interesting history and culture that goes back thousands or years. Peru is a beautiful travel destination, where there is so much to discover and explore both for nature lovers as well as for people interested in culture and history.

However, many children in Peru suffer from extreme poverty, mistreatment and precarious living conditions. Get involved in this volunteer project and give new hope and perspectives to underprivileged children in Peru.

The volunteer positions are all located in the beautiful colonial town of Cusco (starting point for visits to the world famous Machu Picchu). The volunteers are placed in children's homes for boys or girls. The children's homes are home to several dozen children. Some of the children are orphans or can not be cared for by their biological parents (socially very weak families). Others were picked up in the street or placed in homes by the Peruvian social welfare office because the parents do not fulfill their duty of care and responsibility (inter-family violence, alcohol, abuse, drugs, etc.). All children have in common that they have mostly traumatic experiences behind them, which have brought mostly mental or even physical consequences.

Through the projects, the boys and girls get a safe shelter, a balanced diet, clothing and medical care and education. It also ensures that the children receive a school education and hopefully can find their way back to a normal life. Children who have suffered traumatic experiences or been subjected to severe (sexual) abuse also receive psychological support to heal the often deep emotional wounds and to give them new perspectives.

Typical day

The best way to get to know a country with all its facets, to immerse yourself in the language and to experience the culture is to get involved in the local society. Our volunteer projects in Peru are designed to support local communities.

Volunteers assist the local staff in their daily routine tasks and can actively contribute their own ideas to the daily schedule. The tasks include:

  • Helping children with homework
  • Stimulating the growth and development of the children through meaningful activities and games
  • Helping at mealtimes
  • Cleaning and tidying up the homes
  • Organizing cultural activities
  • Organizing and conducting (sports) activities
  • Be there for the children, listen to them and pay attention

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

The city of Cusco, located in the Andes mountain range at 3,399 m.s., was declared the Historical Capital of Peru, being an impressive sample of high Inca engineering whose main tool was stone. As well as places like Choquequirao, Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Tambomachay, Ollantaytambo and especially the world-famous Machu Picchu, are architectural jewel built with the wisdom of the ancient Incas that served as political, religious and administrative center of that time.

Cusco is surrounded by green valleys with imposing tourist attractions and offers pleny of cultural activities, visits to historic sites, outdoor sports and the connection with ancient traditions. Cusco is known as the navel of the world for being the political and territorial center of the old Inca Empire. Cusco and surroundings show a striking geographical variety from natural mountain ranges and reliefs, to rivers like the Urubamba.

In your spare time, there is a wide range of activities to choose from. Most volunteers explore the nature and culture of Peru while also taking in the amazing landscapes that the country has to offer. Volunteers can also socialize in bars or restaurants in Cusco.

Our super tip, you cannot miss out the world famous Inca site Machu Picchu that is not far away!!
