    About the program

    Why This Project Matters

In northern Bali, local schools and kindergartens give children a space to learn, grow, and build confidence. Extra support allows teachers more time for individual attention and brings creative, interactive learning into the classroom.

The impact is clear: in 2025, wayers supported English teaching at five schools, reaching over 700 students. Volunteers strengthened children's English skills and confidence, supported teachers, encouraged learning through play, and introduced creative methods. Over 200 students also joined sports and movement activities, building teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence.

As a volunteer, you combine care for young children aged 2–6 with English teaching for ages 7–11, supporting different stages of development while experiencing daily life in a Balinese community.

    Your Project

Your project combines childcare, creative learning, and English teaching. In the mornings, you'll support local teachers in a kindergarten, before working with older school children later in the day. You'll usually work alongside other international volunteers, so you can prepare activities and teach together.

    Your activities may include:

    • Playing, painting, and doing arts & crafts with younger children
    • Introducing first English words through games and playful activities
    • Supporting local kindergarten teachers
    • Teaching English to children aged around 7–11
    • Preparing creative and interactive lessons
    • Supporting local teachers during classes
    • Bringing your own games, activities, and teaching ideas
    • Helping with occasional organisational tasks
    • Taking part in beach clean-ups with the children and teaching them about sustainability

Depending on your motivation and language skills, you may also have the opportunity to lead English lessons more independently.

Our child protection guidelines apply throughout the project.

    Your Introduction Week

Your first week in Lovina is an included introduction week, giving you time to settle in, understand Balinese culture, and prepare for your project before volunteering begins.

During the week, you'll discover Balinese culture and traditions, explore Lovina and its traditional market, take part in Balinese language lessons, learn about local cuisine, visit the Brahma Vihara Buddhist temple and hot springs, and visit a traditional local school before receiving your project introduction.

Who You Will Be Working With

You'll work alongside local teachers and project staff, younger children in kindergarten, and school children aged around 7–11 years. You'll usually be placed together with other volunteers, particularly during the English teaching activities.

You'll also become part of an international volunteer community in Lovina in the exclusive wayers Home for wayers volunteers. Our local team supports you throughout your stay, and your project coordinator Desi has several years of experience coordinating the teaching programme, introduction activities, and teaching centre.

    What We Expect From You

You don't need previous teaching or childcare experience. More important are creativity, patience, initiative, and a genuine interest in working with children.

You should be comfortable engaging with different age groups, from playing and crafting with young children to helping older students practise English. When teaching, you're encouraged to bring your own ideas and coordinate them with the local team. The more initiative and confidence you bring, the more responsibility you may be able to take on.

What You Can Expect From Us

Before departure, we'll prepare you with an online preparation seminar, access to the wayers Lounge, our digital wayers Workbook, detailed travel information, and the opportunity to connect with other participants before you leave.

Once in Bali, your package includes your airport transfer from Denpasar to Lovinadaily transport to the project where necessary, your one-week introduction programme, contacts at your project, personal support from our local team, and a 24-hour emergency line in Germany and Bali. After returning home, you'll receive a certificate of participation.

    Life at the wayers Home

You'll stay at the exclusive wayers Home in Lovina only for wayers volunteers, a traditional Balinese-style volunteer house where the community is a big part of the experience. Relax by the pool, spend time together on the terrace and in the living areas, or head to the beach after your project.

The house is only around 200 metres from the beach and within walking distance of central Lovina. Beach clubs, local markets, shops, and ATMs are all nearby, while dolphin trips, snorkelling, temples, and the surrounding countryside give you plenty to explore.

    School Holidays

During school holidays, particularly in the summer months, kindergarten placements may be closed. From June to August, you can generally participate mainly in the teaching project instead. Alternative activities may include Kids Club activities, Balinese language course, **beach clean-ups or renovation and clean-up work at schools. **

    Travel with Confidence

With wayers, you're not travelling alone. From preparation before departure to your arrival and everyday life in Bali, our teams support you throughout your experience. You'll have personal contacts on site, project guidance, an extensive introduction week, and access to our 24-hour emergency support in both Germany and Bali.

    Typical day

As a volunteer, you are at the project for around 4 to 5 hours a day. (Mon-Fri)

Your day involves both taking care of kids aged between two and six and teaching at a school for children aged between seven and eleven.

Morning: After breakfast, a wayers shuttle gets you and the other volunteers to the kindergarden. Your morning is all about working with younger kids. Together with the local teachers, you support creative learning activities, play games, draw, do crafts, and introduce the kids to their first English words. You will also help with preparing lessons and activities for the following days.

Midday: Around 11:30 am, you take a lunch break and have some time to recharge before your afternoon activities.

Afternoon: After lunch, you teach the older kids aged between seven and eleven. You support the local teachers with English lessons and if you think you're up for it you can even teach parts of the lesson yourself. From time to time you can also help with organisational tasks or community activities such as beach clean-ups with the kids. Your project day usually ends around 3:00 to 4:00 pm.

Evening: Back at the wayers Home, you are free for the rest of the day. Relax by the pool, head to the beach, explore Lovina with the other volunteers, or simply enjoy a cosy evening together. Bali has plenty to offer outside your project, from local markets, temples and beaches to stunning landscapes.

Please note that daily activities may vary by school schedules and season. Kindergardens and schools sometimes close on short notice during local holidays.
