    About the program

WILD Campo Alegre Nature Reserve is a Danish‑led conservation project in the Colombian Andes, working to restore cloud forest and páramo across a high‑mountain landscape that has been heavily impacted by cattle ranching and deforestation. The reserve protects 1,450 hectares between 2,900 and 4,500 meters above sea level, where unique and threatened species such as mountain tapir, spectacled bear, puma, Andean condor, the critically endangered indigo‑winged parrot, and many endemic plants and animals depend on the return of intact habitat. Our work focuses on buying former pastures, managing conservation areas on behalf of local authorities, protecting untouched forest, and replanting large open areas to recreate the original cloud forest. This is essential for restoring ecological balance and ensuring long‑term survival of the region’s biodiversity.

Volunteers play an important role in this effort. They help monitor wildlife, plant trees, produce new seedlings and cuttings for reforestation, maintain forest trails, and support daily operations that allow the reserve to continue its restoration work. The volunteer base is located at 3,100 meters, right at the transition between recovering pastures and untouched forest. It is a peaceful and exceptionally safe part of the Andes, where open fields are slowly turning back into forest and the surrounding mountains offer spectacular views in every direction. Living here means experiencing silence, fresh air, dramatic weather, and the feeling of being far from city stress and close to nature.

Volunteers work alongside our experienced staff, who have many years of knowledge in high‑Andean restoration, as well as other international volunteers. The team is friendly, welcoming, and always ready to teach new skills. We expect volunteers to participate in the daily tasks of the reserve, respect the rules that protect wildlife and nature, and enjoy the environment by hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the landscape. In return, volunteers can expect warm hospitality, good company, beautiful nature, changing mountain weather, comfortable rooms, warm blankets, healthy meals prepared by our local team, solar power, and reliable Starlink internet.

Because of the altitude and climate, volunteers should bring warm clothing, a waterproof jacket, rain pants, indoor warm shoes, and layers for cold evenings. We provide rubber boots in sizes 36–46 for fieldwork. The experience is immersive, meaningful, and deeply connected to the restoration of one of Colombia’s most threatened ecosystems.

    Typical day

A volunteer day at WILD Campo Alegre follows the rhythm of the high Andes, where mornings are clearer and ideal for outdoor work. Breakfast is served at 7:00, and activities begin around 7:30–8:00. Because weather changes quickly at 3,100 meters, starting early allows volunteers to make the most of the bright morning hours.

Daily routines vary widely depending on the needs of the reserve and the interests of each volunteer. Some days focus on greenhouse care, watering seedlings, checking plant health and preparing young trees for planting. Other days involve heading out into the landscape to plant native species in former pastures or help maintain forest trails.

Some days include longer monitoring hikes through cloud forest and páramo. These hikes are not “work” in the traditional sense — they are immersive nature days where volunteers help observe wildlife, identify bird species, look for tracks of mountain tapir or spectacled bear, and assist the biologist with camera traps. These days are often considered a highlight of the experience.

Practical maintenance tasks are also part of life at Campo Alegre, such as repairing trails, organizing tools or supporting daily operations. Everyone receives rubber boots, work gloves and protective glasses when needed.

Lunch is served at 12:00 and is always a hot meal. After a break, activities continue depending on weather conditions. Many days end in the early afternoon, giving volunteers time to relax, read, socialize or explore the surroundings. Juice, coffee/tea and snacks are available throughout the day. Dinner is served around 18:30, often followed by cozy evenings around the fire, playing games or sharing stories.

Nights can be cold, but volunteers sleep comfortably in proper beds with warm blankets. With Starlink internet, solar power, private rooms and dedicated staff, the reserve offers a peaceful, safe and welcoming environment. The combination of meaningful conservation work, fresh mountain air and immersion in extreme Andean nature makes each day both rewarding and restorative.

    Free-time activities

Free time at WILD Campo Alegre is shaped by the peaceful rhythm of the high Andes and the spectacular nature surrounding the reserve. Volunteers can spend their afternoons and weekends exploring cloud forest and páramo, birdwatching along mountain trails, or quietly observing wildlife such as mountain tapir and a wide range of endemic birds. The area offers endless opportunities for hiking, photography and simply enjoying the silence and views of the high‑Andean landscape. You will be handed a small radio for communication, whenever you leave the reserve, which is of course for security, but also simply a very practical device.

Many volunteers enjoy joining the staff for small local activities, such as picking wild blackberries, visiting neighbouring fincas or learning about traditional high‑mountain life. Evenings are often social, with time spent around the fireplace, playing games, sharing stories, drinking tea or coffee (or a beer ;), or learning how to cook Colombian dishes together. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, making it easy to connect with others who share a love for nature.

For those who want to explore beyond the reserve, visits to Santa Rosa de Cabal or Pereira can be arranged. These towns offer cafés, restaurants, bakeries, bars and local markets, as well as practical services. From Pereira or Santa Rosa, volunteers can easily reach popular destinations such as Salento, Cocora Valley, hot springs, horseback riding tours and other attractions in the Coffee Region. Transport for these excursions can be coordinated with the staff (sometimes at an extra cost) and is especially convenient for volunteers staying longer periods.

Quiet days at the reserve are equally rewarding. Volunteers often spend time doing longer hikes in prestine nature, bird watching, reading, writing, practicing Spanish, doing yoga, or simply resting in the fresh mountain air. With comfortable beds, warm blankets, Starlink internet and a cozy common area, the reserve provides a perfect balance between meaningful conservation work and relaxing in an amazingly quiet and beautiful nature.

    On-site Services

All rooms have proper beds, warm blankets for cold nights, and hot showers. We have a washing machine available for volunteers. The reserve is connected to the electricity grid, and a solar‑battery system ensures power during frequent mountain outages. There is no mobile signal, but Starlink internet provides reliable communication.

    Meals

Your fee includes three nutritious meals per day, prepared by our local staff. Lunch and dinner are always served hot, and we provide fresh fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee and small snacks throughout the day.

    Transport

Because the reserve is located 1½ hours up a steep mountain road, all volunteers are picked up in Santa Rosa de Cabal (or Pereira upon request). The fee covers safe transport in our 4x4 vehicles on arrival and departure, as well as the logistical coordination needed to move people and supplies to the reserve. For longer stays, additional transport to Santa Rosa or Pereira can be arranged with the staff.

    Conservation Work & Operations

Volunteer fees also support the daily running of the conservation project: maintaining the greenhouse with thousands of native seedlings, purchasing tools and materials for reforestation, keeping trails safe, and providing rubber boots, work gloves and protective glasses when needed. The fee contributes to fair salaries, health insurance and pension benefits for our local staff, helping create stable employment in the region.

Overall, your contribution ensures that you can live comfortably and safely in a remote high‑Andean reserve while directly supporting cloud forest and páramo restoration. It allows us to provide high‑quality accommodation, healthy food, reliable transport and the infrastructure needed for meaningful conservation work in one of Colombia’s most beautiful mountain landscapes.

    Details on arrival

Volunteers are welcome at WILD Campo Alegre throughout the entire year. To ensure safe transport and a smooth introduction to life in the high Andes, arrivals are organized on Sundays and Wednesdays. These fixed arrival days allow us to coordinate 4x4 transport efficiently and give volunteers a shared start, which creates a welcoming and supportive atmosphere from day one.

Reaching WILD Campo Alegre requires planning, as the reserve lies deep in the mountains at 3,100 meters above sea level. The final part of the journey is a 1½‑hour drive in a 4x4 vehicle from the town of Santa Rosa de Cabal. Because the road is steep and remote, we organize all transport from Santa Rosa to the reserve. Volunteers can travel independently to Santa Rosa, or we can sometimes arrange pickup directly from Pereira if planned in advance.

Most volunteers travel first to Pereira, which is easily reached by buses or domestic flights from Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena. From Pereira’s bus terminal, frequent buses run to Santa Rosa de Cabal, a short 30‑minute ride. On your arrival day (Sunday or Wednesday), our staff will meet you at a designated pickup point and bring you up the mountain in our 4x4.

The same level of support applies to your departure. We coordinate transport down the mountain and ensure you reach Santa Rosa (or Pereira) in time for your onward travel. For volunteers staying longer periods, it is possible to take occasional breaks in Santa Rosa or Pereira. These trips can be arranged with the staff, but must be coordinated ahead of time to ensure vehicle availability.

Pick-up from the Airport of Pereira:
This is possible but needs to be arranged beforehand and has an extra fee. Often, flights arrive too late for making the trip to the WCA nature reserve the same day. Also, if you arrive from sea level, it makes sense to have a night in Pereira (1400 masl) in order to acclimatize to the altitude. If you arrive from 1 or more nights in Bogotá, you will have no issues with the altitude.

Arrival days at WILD Campo Alegre are relaxed and welcoming. After the mountain drive, volunteers settle into their rooms, meet the staff, and receive an introduction to the reserve, safety guidelines, and the conservation work underway. You will be shown the greenhouse, the main house, the trails, and the areas where reforestation and monitoring take place. Rubber boots, work gloves and protective glasses are provided if needed, and laundry can be done at the reserve.

Because the reserve is located in a high‑mountain climate, temperatures typically range from 6–19°C year‑round. Rain can occur in any season, often in the early afternoon, while mornings are usually clearer. We recommend bringing warm layers, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a waterproof jacket and comfortable indoor shoes/slippers and warm socks. The staff will help you adjust to the altitude and ensure you feel comfortable during your first days.

With organized transport, fixed arrival days and a supportive team, arriving at WILD Campo Alegre is straightforward and safe. From the moment you reach Santa Rosa, we take care of the logistics so you can focus on settling in, meeting the team and preparing for your conservation work in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Andes.
