    About the program

The Community Outreach & Cultural Exchange Programme with TANF Ghana offers volunteers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful community activities while experiencing everyday life and culture in Ghana.

Based in Oboadaka–Aburi in Ghana’s Eastern Region, volunteers support TANF Ghana’s community initiatives involving children, young people and families. Activities may include education support, recreational and creative activities, community engagement, health awareness, environmental activities and other community-based initiatives, depending on current needs and the volunteer’s interests.

Volunteers work alongside TANF Ghana staff and community members. Activities are structured according to the needs of the community and may vary during the volunteer’s stay. The programme is suitable for individuals, students, groups and travellers who want to make a positive contribution while learning from the local community.

No specific professional qualifications are required for this programme. We value enthusiasm, reliability, respect, teamwork and a willingness to learn. Volunteers are expected to respect local customs and work in a responsible and culturally sensitive manner.

TANF Ghana provides pre-arrival guidance, orientation upon arrival, programme coordination and local support throughout the volunteer placement. Volunteers stay in private accommodation in Oboadaka–Aburi, with shared common facilities and access to basic utilities.

Food is not included in the programme fee. Volunteers are responsible for their own meals, while TANF Ghana can assist with finding affordable local food, groceries and meal options.

Airport pickup and drop-off are also not included in the programme fee but are available as an optional paid service.

During their free time, volunteers can experience Ghanaian culture, visit local attractions and explore the surrounding area. Optional tours and excursions through TANF Charity Tours are available separately and are paid for by volunteers who choose to participate. This allows each volunteer to decide which experiences suit their interests and budget.

The programme offers a genuine opportunity to give back, connect with the local community and experience Ghana beyond the typical tourist experience.

    Typical day

A typical volunteering day begins with a short team briefing to review the day’s activities and responsibilities. Volunteers then travel to the project site, where they may support educational activities, organize games and creative activities, engage with children and young people, participate in community outreach or assist with other community-based activities depending on the current needs of the community.

Volunteer activities generally take place during the morning and early afternoon, with regular breaks and close coordination with TANF Ghana staff, teachers, community leaders and other local partners. Activities are supervised and adapted to ensure that they are safe, meaningful and culturally appropriate.

After the day’s activities, volunteers have time to relax, interact with community members, reflect on their experience or prepare for the following day.

Evenings are generally free for personal time and relaxation in the Oboadaka–Aburi community.

During their free time and weekends, volunteers can explore the local area and experience Ghanaian culture. Optional tours and excursions are available separately through TANF Charity Tours for volunteers who wish to visit waterfalls, markets, historical sites and other attractions.
