About the program

This project aims to make legal services available to poor people who cant afford the services of a lawyer to help them get justice. You will be working hand in hand with a team of local legal aid lawyers to seek fair legal representation for underprivileged and marginalize people in Ghana.

This placement is best for interns with a strong interest in affecting change for the better while keeping in mind the long-term aim of the projects. You can expect to operate in urban and rural locations, meet people at all levels of society, and engage with international and domestic authorities and organizations to find legal solutions for poor people who cant afford legal representation in court and mediation. It is important to demonstrate cultural understanding and flexibility. Our mandate is to empower individuals and communities as well as nurture a supportive framework for human rights rather than impose western ideals on Ghanaian society. This internship opportunity will provide all legal and soliciting training relating to criminal and civil law adjudication in Ghana and Africa more broadly. Most of the law firms within which interns are placed have more than 30 years’ experience and expertise, and their lawyers are well known and reputable among the country on all aspects of the law. Their attorneys cater for problems notwithstanding any geographical location. This program provides an opportunity for students considering law school to work within a law firm, to observe what lawyers actually do in their daily activities, and to perform a variety of tasks that will help them determine if they have the desire, capabilities, and temperament that it takes to be a lawyer.

Our Criminal and Civil Law Volunteer/Internship Program in Ghana is one of the most highly recognized legal internship opportunities in Africa. It has been described as one of the finest pre-law experiences available and has been consistently ranked as one of the most hands-on internship programs. The interns are assigned to either one or two attorneys in the trial division for whom they are to complete all investigative aspects of the assigned cases. This project is open both people with legal background and people hoping the study law in the future and wants to have a first hand experience.

Typical day

The specific tasks that volunteers/interns will perform will largely depend on the volunteers/interns abilities and performance. These tasks may, however, may include:

Locating and interviewing witnesses, meeting with and interviewing clients, assisting attorneys by collecting, reviewing and assembling data for presentation to support cases and complainants, legal research, taking detailed witness statements, performing extensive criminal background checks, serving subpoenas, photographing and diagramming crime scenes, preparing courtroom exhibits, preparing memorandum regarding investigative activities, assisting with case development, and generally assisting the assigned attorney(s) in and out of court.

As a Law intern in Ghana, your typical working hours will be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
You will normally start your mornings in the office at your placement. The first hour or two of the day will be dedicated to helping with legal administration. This may include drafting legal documents and affidavits, and conducting legal research.
By late morning, you may either accompany one of the local lawyers to court or interact with clients. The latter may include registering new cases, conducting interviews, or preparing clients for their cases.
You will get an hour and a half break over lunch time. If your host family lives close by, you could head home to eat and have a short rest. Alternatively, you will be able to enjoy a packed lunch.
Afternoons are normally divided between going to court and continuing with administrative tasks. If you had been to court earlier, you may be expected to prepare some notes for a discussion. If you’ve been working with clients, you would be able to complete filing their most recent case information.
Evenings and weekends are your free time to explore, rest, and relax. Accra has a lively atmosphere and some fabulous restaurants. You can use weekends to adventure slightly further afield. Head out on a hiking trail in the mountains, take a trip to the beach, or visit a nature reserve.

Definitely glad I did this! There are a lot of great things to say but here are some things to be aware of when forming expectations- -it's best to do the medical project if you are already trained (maybe pre-med). You get dropped off in a department of your choosing but then are completely on your ...

2024 at Assistant for Medical Work

I stayed in Ghana for 6 weeks and spent my time volunteering at maternity and neonatal units at 2 different local hospitals. At first, the culture shock I experienced was intense. Everything is different; the smells, the food, the housing and the heat all make a big impact on how you will adjust. As ...
