Volunteers are typically placed in a dental clinic or general health clinic offering dental services in Cusco. The role of volunteers is to assist with day to day functions in the clinic while gaining valuable exposure to dental practice and the healthcare system in Peru.
Dental volunteers may be asked to:
- Help out in the reception area with appointments and paperwork
- Assist with teeth cleaning and check-ups
- Shadow a dentist or hygienist
- Teach patients about basic dental hygiene and healthy routines
- Clean and prepare materials
Please be prepared to work directly with Spanish-speaking project staff. You are always supported by Maximo Nivel’s in-country coordinators but they are not on site at your project every day.
The majority of our projects are located in and around Cusco. Travel time varies from project to project, but volunteers can expect to spend 15-40 minutes traveling each way, by either walking or using local buses or taxis. For the first visit to the project volunteers are taken by a Maximo Nivel representative using the local transport and given additional information about how to get to and from your project. Local buses cost approximately S/. 1 (about US$0.50) one way.
Typical day
Working hours vary according to the needs of the project, but volunteers can expect to work 3-4 hours per day, Monday to Friday, either in the morning or in the afternoon depending on the project.
Free-time activities
All year round, Cusco and its surrounding towns celebrate a mix of Inca and Catholic holidays, providing visitors with a variety of different cultural activities to experience. Cusco offers travelers a plethora of historical and archaeological sites both in and out of the city. Volunteers most commonly like to explore the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, and of course Machu Picchu. Our local staff also posts a monthly events calendar to let them know of the activities going on around Maximo. Our on-site travel partner is also very knowledgeable and can assist in setting up trips.

Requirements
In order to join the program you need to be at least 17 years old on the program start date.
You need to speak English (basic level)

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Your helping hand will be required on
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Airport pick up in Cusco is included. Volunteers find our representative outside the airport bringing a yellow flag with a smiley face on it.
Volunteers stay in a traditional family-stay where you they are placed with a pre-approved middle class Peruvian family. Breakfast and dinner are included in their home stay.
Volunteers have 2 meals included (breakfast and dinner) 7 days a week.
Limited access at the project site
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
The nearest airport is Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cuzco. We assist you to find cheap flights to Peru.
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Peru provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Peru you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Peru.

The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Your final payment will be agreed with Maximo Nivel during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
