You will be immersed in the laid-back coastal life of Canoa.
At Los Algarrobos, located on the beautiful costa of Ecuador, you will work as an elementary school teacher and will be submersed in the relaxed costal life of Canoa. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

In 2006 the U.S. Navy veteran James (Jimmy) Dean, together with a small group of parents, setup the bilingual elementary school 

Los Algarrobos. The goal is to provide the children of Canoa with better education and prepare them for the increasing number of tourists. Nowadays, the school has 93 students and employs local teachers. Nevertheless, the school is helped by volunteers and interns who can support classes and setup as well as assist with extracurricular activities.

At our partner project, located on the beautiful costa of Ecuador, you will be submersed in the relaxed and laid-back costal life of Canoa, an upcoming village where fishery has made room for tourism.

Typical day

From 7 am until 1 pm. you will be working in and around the 

Los Algarrobos school, whereas in the afternoon you will be occupied with various different activities. Canoa is famous for its beautiful environment and is also considered one of the best surf spots in Ecuador. Enjoy some of the delicious local dishes, the many activities and the relaxed life on the coast.

Free-time activities

In the weekends you are free to come and go wherever you want. The region is one of the tourist attractions of Ecuador. Visit Isla de la Plata, Los Frailes National Park or make friends in nearby Montañita.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Airport Pickup at Mariscal Sucre International Airport

When you arrive at airport Mariscal Sucre near Quito, our driver José Luis will be waiting for you at the gate. We always provide him with some pictures of you, so he will for sure recognize you. Together with José Luis you will make a one-hour drive to our office in the centre of Quito. At the office, one of our coordinators will welcome you and show you arround in the neighborhood. After a little small talk we will bring you to your host family/ the volunteer house where you have all the time to recover from your flight.

Depending on what we agreed on, you will make your bus trip to Canoa from Quito fairly soon after arrival or you will first stay with us in the capital for a while.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Please arrange your own accommodation. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) in Quito. We assist you to find cheap flights to Ecuador.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Ecuador provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Ecuador you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Ecuador.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Foundation Local Dreamers during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
