Our partner Fundación Hermano Miguel is a non-profit organization that has been serving medical care to the community since 1984, also helping people with a physical or functional limitation. The foundation foresees in the distribution of therapeutic and medical services and implementation of technological innovations, like orthotic, prostheses and mobility aids. To ensure full service, a multidisciplinary team of specialists was set up. Volunteers and interns are of indispensable value to them.
A unique feature of the organization is their special program for people that normally would not have the resources to gain access to good healthcare. A group of sponsors and donators and creative solutions make it possible for these people to be a part of Fundación Hermano Miguel.
Within this health care project you have several options, depending on how good your level of Spanish is, the length of your stay, the courses you follow and also your work experience. There is a diversity of healthcare disciplines you can get involved in. We name them here:
You can work part-time or full-time at the care center, depending on your further program. Normally you start at 9 AM and finish your day around 5 PM. In between you have ample time to have lunch with your colleagues and fellow volunteers.
The content of your program mainly depends on the specialisms in which you participate. For example, if you are a physiotherapy student, then you will logically spend a lot of time in this department.
The extent to which you are allowed to treat patients yourself depends very much on your knowledge and skills and on your level of Spanish
During your stay with Local Dreamers you will live with one of our local host families or you will have a room in our volunteer house. It's completely up to you. Both the host families and volunteer house (located above our office) are located in central Quito, near the historical center and the tourist center.
In the weekends you are free to come and go wherever you want. Ecuador is incredibly versatile, but still relatively small and easily accessible. From Quito you can easily go on a discovery tour and get to know more of this fantastic country. Our coordinators are happy to help you on your way. If you want to take a little more time for a trip, that is of course always possible. We are a flexible organization and are happy to think along with you.
The mentioned costs involve room, board, airport pickup and preparation & guidance as well as a one-time contribution towards the project.
Our host families provide a daily breakfast and dinner, which is included in the price. All our families are happy to introduce you to the Ecuadorian cuisine, and will provide you with varied meals. In the evening they prepare a warm meal, with plenty of vegetables and meat. They also like to take into account any allergies or vegetarian requirements, please let us know during your application.
In our volunteer house we have a large kitchen with everything you need to prepare great meals. We often see volunteers doing the shopping and cooking together. There is a large supermarket on the same street.
At our office we provide drinking water, coffee and tea. Lunch will be for your own costs.
Be aware that you can only get involved in this project when you have a background and experience in health care disciplines OR if you have the ambition to work in the medical world and are following or want to follow training in this field.
To become a volunteer or intern for this project, a minimum stay of two months in Quito is required.
