Singles
Couples
Groups

The average general health of younger Fijians is generally quite good, as sport is a popular pastime in the country. However, children’s diets can also be filled with a lot of sugar, leading to dental issues other health problems down the track.

In particular, older women tend to become overweight, especially after the birth of their children. Since most of the local population live in the villages, they have little or no knowledge of hygiene and diet. This leads to a wide range of diseases such as high blood sugar, cholesterol, hypertension etc. The other common diseases in the villages are skin eruptions/lesions, urinary infections, gum and heart diseases.

Cheap imported food can also contribute to diets lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables, and general knowledge around healthy eating and its benefits is sadly lacking.

This healthcare program is in its infancy and requires the skills of both established medical and healthcare professionals, as well as those interested in teaching basic first-aid and personal hygiene.

The need for having volunteers from a variety of medical fields can help assist with the extremes in hygiene and health practices. Apart from needing qualified professionals in order to conduct health camps and dental check-ups, we also need volunteers who can educate people in the areas of basic first-aid and personal hygiene such as washing hands, brushing teeth and general cleanliness. This can help prevent many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases.

Medical professionals who can offer guidance on the project’s development would be immensely valuable; however, it is not imperative that participants have a medical background to join. As a participant of this project, you can support to run healthcare campaigns in local schools/villages around Sigatoka (Coral Coast), teach the locals on the importance of basic hygiene – demonstrating how to brush teeth correctly, washing hands and general body cleanliness.

Simply demonstrating these daily health practices can really make a difference. If you have a medical background, check-up clinics for local children and adults can be organised with your help.

Location
Coral Coast is noted as the ‘adventure capital of Fiji’ and is located about 1 hour from Suva and 1 hour from Nadi. It is known for it’s incredibly beautiful coast line, tourist beaches and resorts and heaps of activities from 4 wheel drive tours, shark feeding, surfing, rivers & waterfalls, golf etc and is home to the famous Bega lagoon and bega fire walkers. Sigatoka is the gateway to the Coral coast and home to several of our projects.
