The Project
This project was set up to take care of children who come from low-income indigenous families that have moved to Quito in search of jobs. Unfortunately, many of the families have ended up in a worse economic situation than where they came from. The parents usually work full-time, which means they cannot look after their children. This day care center enables families to know that their children are in a comfortable and safe environment.
The main objective of this project is to give the children care and make sure that their educational, nutritional, and psychological needs are met. The day care centers are very short on funding, so volunteers are crucial to their continuation.
If you love children, this project is perfect for you. It gives you the chance to make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families. Your time as a volunteer will be one of the most impactful and memorable experiences of your life.
Your Tasks
This job is very rewarding in the sense that you get to see the difference you have made in the children’s lives first-hand.
On a typical work day, you will help with daily chores, feed smaller children, organize and play games, and teach them basic skills and manners. Volunteers should be very creative, and if you have any ideas on how to teach or help the children, don't be afraid to share them.
The resources at the centers are minimal, so volunteers are encouraged to bring in materials themselves that can help the kids learn and play. We ask volunteers to be aware that they will be a role model for the children during their time at the centers. This means that their behavior should set a good example for the children.
During your project, you will stay in Quito, the
capital of Ecuador. This is an amazing city with rich historic and cultural heritage. So, you have many cultural activities to choose from, such as music concerts, sightseeing, etc. You can also do adventure sport and day excursiones to the close-by national parks and natural sites.
During your project, you will stay with a local host family in a private room or share it with another volunteer (based on availability). Bathrooms and living areas are shared. This is a wonderful way to learn about the country’s culture and rapidly improve your Spanish skills.
Full-board is provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
