    About the program

Each summer, specifically from May to June, we extend an invitation to Pre-Med students and healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, as well as Volunteers to come and help during our annual 3-week free Medical camp/clinic. This 150-hour summer health study abroad program in Africa focuses on providing services to residents of the Nairobi slums and Samburu village. Was founded in 2022 by Dr. Sarah Imam, the Director of Health Services and an associate professor of health and human performance at Citadel Military College in South Carolina, USA, 2022, the program was inspired by her own experiences in Kenya with the UCESCO Africa volunteer initiative in the year 2021 when she came to UCESCO Africa as a Medical volunteer.

Participants will collaborate with local healthcare providers, gaining insights into the community's health challenges and needs while developing valuable skills for their future careers in healthcare. We are aiming to assist over 15,000 vulnerable patients in the Kibera, Kariobangi, and Kwawagware slums of Nairobi, as well as in the remote rural village of Samburu. Volunteers will accumulate more than 150 clinical service hours through diverse medical rotations, which include:

    • - Primary Care (with various medical specialties)
    • - Dental Care
    • - Clinical Laboratory Testing
    • - Triage
    • - Pharmacy/Medicine Dispensing
    • - Nursing/Treatment/Wound Care/Vaccination Administration
    • - Vision Testing
    • - Electrocardiogram (EKG)/Sonography/Ultrasound
    • - Physical Therapy
This journey offers a unique opportunity to engage with healthcare practices in this region while making a meaningful impact on the lives of others. Participants need to approach the experience with an open mind, a willingness to learn, enthusiasm, and objectivity. The trip may evoke strong emotions, as participants will encounter individuals facing significant hardships, but their interactions will contribute positively in numerous ways.

The schedule will include a clinic during weekdays and opportunities for rest and sightseeing on weekends. A minimum stay of two weeks is recommended to experience Kenya's wildlife and rich culture. Those able to stay the three weeks would fly into Nairobi, Kenya, and leave out of Mombasa, Kenya (the last Rest and Recovery location). (Nairobi, Kenya, Round Trip for those staying less than three weeks). The Citadel Foundation has been the sole sponsor of this initiative, supporting approximately 121 student cadets over the past four years (32
cadets in 2022, 26 in 2023, 28 in 2024, and 35 in 2025).  These Cadets were supervised by 5 Professors led by Dr. Sarah A. Imam, MD, Director of Health Sciences and Associate Professor of Health and Human Performance. These efforts have successfully provided medical care, starting with 3,857 patients the first year in 2022, 5,493 patients in 2023 calendar year, 10,906 in 2024, and 15,000 over 19 May – 6 June 2025. The primary requirement is resources to sustain the clinic. The Kenyan community / the Ministry of Health / Kenya National Health have shown strong support for this initiative.

Most meals (Breakfast and dinner at Airbnb with Lunch provided on-site at the Medical Camp / Clinic) will be included, but there will also be opportunities for personal exploration of local dining options.

English and Swahili are the primary languages, and Google Translate can be a useful tool.

The mission will take place from Monday, May 18, to Friday, June 5, with clinic days scheduled for Monday through Thursday during the first
week. From Friday to Sunday, volunteers will have the chance to go on a safari to the Masai Mara National Reserve, organized by Meaningful Tours and Travel, a partner organization of UCESCO Africa. The Masai Mara is a world-renowned wildlife destination, celebrated for its expansive savannahs, diverse wildlife, and the spectacular annual Great Migration of wildebeest, making it a top safari location in East Africa.  Participants would cover $200 daily Masai Mara Park entry fee ($400 for 2 days) as well as Electronic Visa costs ($50), a Valid Passport (valid through Jan 27 recommended). A $200 Medical License Fee for those professionals who would use their medical skills. Any Medical equipment brought in can be coordinated with UCESCO / Customs to avoid entry fees, but it must be coordinated ahead of time. During the second week, clinical activities will continue from Monday to Friday, followed by weekend tours of the Kibera slums, the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and Bomas of Kenya (showcases traditional Kenyan culture and offers city tours of Nairobi). Cost already covered with the exception of some meals.

In the third week, the clinic plan is from Monday to Friday, with a shortened schedule on Friday. In the evening, a dinner will be held to express gratitude to both volunteers and local doctors and local volunteers. This gathering will serve as a time for reflection on areas needing improvement for next year, and we will share our experiences while enjoying our final meal with the local community. The following day, volunteers will travel on a short flight to Mombasa for a two-night, three-day stay before returning to their home country, flying out of Mombasa. Mombasa is Kenya's premier tourist destination, located on the eastern coast next to the Indian Ocean, renowned for its stunning beaches. This cost is covered for those staying three weeks with the exception of a few meals at this location.

Accommodation: UCESCO has arranged a comfortable and relaxing Airbnb apartment in a desirable area of Nairobi, conveniently located near popular malls, banks, and restaurants. This area is known for its safety and is favored by expatriates and foreigners. The Elite building offers a sense of security, with attentive guards monitoring access. The apartment is clean, cozy, and can comfortably accommodate up to 50
volunteers during the medical camp, provided it is booked in advance.

Transportation: During the medical camp, UCESCO Africa will arrange for a bus/minibus to transport volunteers throughout the three-week period. Since we will be working as a team, the organization prefers that volunteers travel together. This transportation will be available to take volunteers from their accommodations to the medical camp sites and for city tours. One bus can accommodate up to 40 individuals.

At the conclusion of the mission, UCESCO Africa will present certificates of appreciation to the individuals and Churches/mosques/institutions, organizations who have contributed, and to each volunteer during the final dinner. Over the second weekend in Nairobi, we plan to share meals with the children at Peggy Lucas School. Participation in this activity is optional and will depend on the volunteers ' interest and availability.  Any school items volunteers can bring for the children, especially things they no longer use, would be greatly appreciated, as these children are truly wonderful but in great need.

    APPLICATION NOTE
The deadline for applications for this year's mission is April 1st, as the Medical camp will commence in May and continue through June.

As you prepare to join us for your volunteer experience in Kenya, please review the following general guidelines.

    Mobile Phones and Internet Connectivity

    1. Having a mobile phone allows you to maintain communication with your family and friends. Local SIM cards, with Safaricom being the predominant provider, provide cost-effective options.
    2. Internet connectivity can be accessed through Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, or public spaces such as cafes and shopping centers. Additionally, modem sticks for laptops are available as an alternative.
    Packing Essentials
    • Necessary items: Passport, Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, travel pillow, personal care products, dry shampoo, moist towelettes, and hand sanitizer.
    General Questions
Q: Can I bring my family along?
A: Absolutely, you can. While those under 18 should have a guardian, it is not a strict requirement. We welcome minors aged 14 and above without a guardian, as long as there is proper coordination established. We guarantee their safe transit to and from the airport. Our organization is the sole trusted provider in Kenya for the care of minors, ensuring they receive the same level of attention and care as we would offer our own.
Q: Is it possible to donate?
    A: Yes, we welcome donations.
Q: Can I arrange for additional donations?
A: Certainly! You can create fundraising campaigns on platforms like GoFundMe to gather extra support.

Q: Are T-shirts and identification tags available?
A: The organization offers T-shirts and tags for a fee. While T-shirts are optional, we strongly recommend obtaining a tag for identification while participating in our projects. The cost is $10 for a T-shirt and $6 for a tag. These purchases not only support the organization but also the projects we undertake. To help sustain its operations, UCESCO-AFRICA encourages volunteers to buy merchandise, which serves as a lasting reminder of your involvement and support.
How to Acquire Merchandise: Merchandise can be purchased directly at the UCESCO-AFRICA offices. Payments can be made in cash or via mobile transfer (e.g., MPesa).
Why Contribute Through Merchandise? The revenue generated from merchandise sales aids in funding UCESCO-AFRICA’s community initiatives, including programs for at-risk children and various outreach efforts.

    Kenya Safari Animals & Wildlife

    • The wildlife of Kenya serves as the primary draw for tourists exploring Africa, largely due to the remarkable variety of animals and birds that can be observed during a safari, a diversity that is unparalleled in many other countries. With its rich ecosystem, Kenya is home to around 400 species of mammals and an even greater number of bird species, providing an exceptional experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to encounter some of the most iconic safari animals, including the Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many others.
    • Animals are categorized into mammals, featuring the renowned Big Five—lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo—as well as the Big Nine, which includes additional animals that are also highly sought after during safari excursions in Kenya. These include the cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, and the commonly seen zebra. Many of our volunteers inquire about the best locations in Kenya to view all of the Big Nine. The ideal approach is to explore at least 2 to 3 different parks during your safari, with the Masai Mara National Reserve being one of the few locations where all of the Big Nine can potentially be spotted.
