Join us in making a meaningful impact on the environment and contribute to the preservation of one of the most vital coastal ecosystems on our planet. This project offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about nature, conservation, and community engagement to actively participate in restoring and protecting mangrove forests.

Project Overview

Our Mangrove Conservation Volunteer Project aims to restore and maintain mangrove habitats through a range of hands-on activities. Volunteers will work alongside experienced conservationists, researchers, and local communities to contribute to the long-term sustainability of these invaluable ecosystems. By engaging in this project, you will not only deepen your understanding of mangrove ecology but also have a positive influence on the environment and the communities that depend on it.

Your Tasks

As a volunteer you will help to restore the mangrove habitats which are endangered. You will be working outside in the nature and stay at our hotel which provides you the ideal accommodation for this experience together with other volunteers. Every day you will be working in a team of volunteers and a team leader. To join the program you don't need to bring any special equipment - just motivation to be part of the project and have fun with the others:)

  • 7AM: Breakfast time
  • 8AM: Drive to the program sight with our private minivan. 
  • 8:30AM: Start the program
  • 11PM: Break time
  • 2PM: Lunch time at the hotel
  • 3PM: Free time, (Sight seeing and other activities possible)
  • 7PM: Dinner time at the hotel
  • 9PM: movie night, game night etc.

Project Activities

Mangrove Reforestation

  • Planting young mangrove saplings to expand existing forests and establish new ones.
  • Assisting in seed collection, propagation, and nursery management.
  • Participating in shoreline stabilization efforts to prevent erosion and protect mangroves
Ecological Surveys and Data Collection

  • Conducting surveys to assess the health and biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems.
  • Collecting data on flora, fauna, and water quality to aid in conservation planning.
  • Monitoring the growth and success rate of planted mangrove saplings.
Community Outreach and Education

  • Organizing awareness campaigns to educate local communities about the importance of mangroves.
  • Collaborating with schools and community groups to deliver educational workshops.
  • Engaging in community-led conservation initiatives and sustainable livelihood projects.
Habitat Restoration and Maintenance

  • Removing invasive species and waste from mangrove areas.
  • Constructing and maintaining walking trails and boardwalks for visitors.
  • Assisting in the installation and upkeep of artificial structures to enhance mangrove habitat.

  • Immerse yourself in rich cultural heritage by exploring traditional mask-making workshops and vibrant art galleries. 
  • Stroll along the pristine beaches, go swimming in the Ocean or take a yoga beach class and witness breathtaking sunsets.
  • Also you can embrace the tranquility of the Madu River and its enchanting mangrove forests by taking a boat safari or do watersports such as SUP or other sports in the river. 
  • The Balapitiya area of Sri Lanka offers a perfect blend of cultural experiences, nature experiences, and relaxation, making it an unforgettable place to discover.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 14 years old on the program start date.

Language Skills

You need to speak English (basic level)

Nationality Restrictions

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.

Other Skills

14-16 year old volunteers need a permission from legal guardian.

Time Commitment

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

  • Airport Pick-Up: from Colombo airport to the accommodation. (2.5 drive). You will be picked up by one of our project leaders from the arrival hall.

Accommodation

We cannot think of anywhere better to stay when volunteering in Sri Lanka! Our spacious and comfortable volunteer accommodation - the Ayurveda Mountain Villa - is set on a large plot of land on top of a hill in Balapitiya from where you will have a breathtaking view of the surrounding nature. On our roof-top-terrace you have the chance to enjoy yoga classes and relaxing moments with a cup of coffee or tea. Furthermore you can relax by the hotel pool and take a swim to refresh yourself after an enjoyable day at the mangrove project. 

The villa offers 14 rooms where you have the choice of staying at a dorm room shared with your team mates or for an additional price you can choose a double or single room for more privacy during your stay. 

Food & Beverages

All meals are provided by the host. 
They are served buffet style at our local restaurant at the property three times a day.

Where do we work?

We are located in Balabitiya, Sri Lanka, which is a beautiful and culturally rich destination that offers a diverse range of attractions:

1. Natural beauty: Sri Lanka boasts stunning landscapes, from pristine beaches along its coast line to lush tea plantations in its central highlands. The country is also home to several national parks and wild life reserves, offering opportunities to see diverse wildlife including elephants, leopards and a variety of bird species. 

2. Cultural heritage: With a history spanning over 2500 years, Sri Lanka has a rich cultural heritage. You can explore ancient cities, temples and historical sights such as Sigiriya, an ancient rock fortress, and the sacred city of Anuradhapura.
