About the program

Marine Conservation volunteers provide support to underwater clean-up efforts, helping to reduce ocean pollution and conserve marine life. As an ocean conservation volunteer, you’ll be using and improving your scuba diving skills while being actively involved in restoring the natural state of the marine ecosystem of the Mediterranean.

When having no diving experience, volunteers will have to gain some before engaging in any underwater conservation activities. The Program Fee covers the cost of the required online and in-person training, full scuba equipment, and volunteer supervision from an experienced dive instructor. All volunteers are able to take internationally recognized diving certifications.
It is recommended to stay at least 2 weeks to guarantee the Open Water certification as it depends on weather conditions and 1 week might not be enough.
Depending on your current diving experience and the length of your stay you’ll complete a certification ranging from Open Water Diver to Rescue Diver with dozens of dives and specialties. The project works with a local diving school, therefore you are always supervised by an experienced dive instructor.

By joining this project you’ll become part of a worldwide movement of passionate people dealing with the global challenge of litter and the impact human development is having on the marine environment. All efforts on the project work towards the vision of healthier oceans, thriving ecosystems and a clean coastline.
As part of this, your tasks as a volunteer can include collecting trash from the sea, logging information on items collected, learning more about the marine ecosystem and how to protect it, and observing and identifying fish.

Please, note in your application when you apply for the program if you have any existing dive certifications.

Accommodation

You will stay accommodated in a social hostel with a meaningful social mission in Barcelona city.  The Hostel has the capacity to accommodate up to 320 conscious travelers who want to visit Barcelona in a responsible way.
There are various common areas such as dining room, living room, room balconies and outside areas.

The hostel is in a neighborhood where you can find everything you need: a mall, local coffee shops, supermarkets, ATMs, hospital, police and most utilities you will need just around the corner. The Hostel is 5 minutes walking from the metro stop and has many buses and a tranvia running by that can bring you to the city center in 10 minutes.

But what is really unique about it is its social concept. The hostel is actually a social business for a non-profit ran in the same building. The non-profit develops a wide range of programs, campaigns and activities for children and youth, their families and third sector organizations

Food & Beverages

We will provide breakfast and lunch at the hostel everyday. The hostel restaurant offers meals with fresh local ingredients everyday for all volunteers in a very Spanish style and they are prepared to accommodate most diet restrictions such as vegan and vegetarians, gluten-free and lactose intolerant.

For dinner, you can either explore the city or use the kitchen at the accommodation :)

Honestly, I was surprised, when on the website it shows photos of so many dogs, animals, it turned out I was working at a cat sanctuary.
