About the program

About Habiba Community

Habiba Community is committed to transforming the lives of local Bedouin communities by promoting sustainable agriculture and permaculture. We do this by empowering the Bedouins we employ to experiment with organic farming, helping them not only grow their own produce but to conduct their own research into how best to make use of the resources around us. Our goal at the farm is to help the local Bedouins learn and create their own farms, thus creating employment, food security, and a sense of commitment to the future of our shared environment. Habiba aspires to set a successful example to be followed by locals across the Sinai Peninsula.

Habiba Community is based in Nuweiba, South Sinai with the Sinai Mountains on one side and sandy beaches with turquoise waters on the other. The farm is based on a plot of what was an empty desert and has transformed it into a production hub of locally grown organic vegetables, as well as a center for research in sustainable desert agriculture. We are a center for research and regularly collaborate and conduct knowledge transfer with the Desert Research Center as well as agricultural research institutes around the world. For this reason, Habiba welcomes volunteers, students conducting research, and experts.

Habiba also aims to promote the importance of conservation. We teach the local communities the benefits of organic farming practices, showing that it not only benefits the individuals who consume the product, but also the environment as a whole.

Regenerative Farming

After years of conventional agriculture in the area, farmers are now understanding how important switching to organic agriculture is. So they are at least not using chemicals to produce their crops anymore. Besides the organic agriculture and permaculture approach, the Habiba Regenerative Farm aims now at moving a step further than organic farming to not just produce organically but also to try to regenerate the soil, the biodiversity, and the entire surrounding ecosystem.

In this way, we are experimenting, testing, and applying different, new techniques to combine innovation with traditional knowledge and revive the biology and microbiology in the soil that will support the growth of our vegetables and hence our health.

At the Regenerataive Farm, you are going to be involved with the ongoing tests and the new ones that regard soil building, making natural fertilizers, composting techniques, mulching, eco-design principles, agroforestry, and learning about soil and water analysis at our Lab!

Training

You will spend a few days with our farmers and other volunteers and students to learn the basic concepts of desert farming, water management techniques, and waste management in order to be able to do your activities independently after one week.

The surroundings of Nuweiba

You will leave close to the sea but still in a desert environment. The mountains of the Sinai Desert are very close and the farm is now what then was just a desertic plot. Nevertheless, we are very close (20 minutes walking) to the town with all the services needed, markets, restaurants, bakeries, souvenir shops, pharmacies, post offices, and banks. Habiba is well known in the surroundings and all our neighbors are very friendly and will invite you for a cup of tea every day.

What should I bring?

Sun protection, including lightweight clothing to cover your head, neck, and shoulders, mosquito repellant, sturdy shoes, work gloves, beach gear, and a sense of adventure. Most of the above are available in shops around Dahab and Nuweiba, but it is preferable to buy your quality shoes and cargo gear before arriving. Winter gets chilly, even in Sinai, especially in January and February, so bring warm clothes for the evenings.

Typical day

You will interact with community members at the Habiba Farms. You will spend time doing organic and regenerative farming, helping with projects run by local community members, and generally interacting with them. Work schedule varies by season and the most critical time is autumn, starting mid-September.

The workday schedule is flexible, but it is usually divided into morning and afternoon activities. In the morning it starts around 7 am and finishes around 10 am, all the volunteers have breakfast together between 10:30 and 11:30 am, then there is free time and the afternoon activities start again around 3 pm until 5 pm. The schedule slightly changes between summer and winter time.

The workday usually consists of:

  • Helping local farmers with their agricultural daily activities such as planting, cleaning, harvesting, and other general farm work.
  • Assisting in the construction and maintenance of farm buildings and infrastructure.
  • Plant maintenance, composting, and sifting of soil for the Regenerative Farm.
  • Interacting with members of the community and participating in knowledge exchange.
  • Being involved in soil and water experiments and new pilot projects regarding ecosystem restoration of the desert environment.

Volunteers work six days a week, with excursions typically planned on the seventh day unless, of course, you prefer to stay and relax at the lodge.

After the activities, it is your free time to relax in the beachside area. Dinner is served at 7 pm and usually is vegetarian, home-style food made entirely with produce from the organic farm.

Handprint and Footprint

For us, the most valuable thing is human capital. We like and welcome people that travel with a cause and are responsible travelers that want to leave a positive impact in the communities they stay and leave with. Habiba is full of potential for you to find yourself, your life path, or your working inspiration again. Rest assured that the stories that you hear and the connections that you make will leave with you as well as your experiences, stories, and knowledge will impact in return the people with whom you will get to know.

About the project

Give back to the community while volunteering at our organic farm or our learning center and help us to build a strong and heallthy future!

Meet your organization

The Habiba Organization which includes a communal organic farm and our learning center is dedicated to building a strong, healthy future for the entire South Sinai Community.

The Habiba Organization is based in Nuweiba, South Sinai, Egypt. Nuweiba is a previously prosperous tourist destination, however we are now aiming to redirect the communities interest and future towards organic agriculture and providing the community with after school classes. The community children do not have resources as children in big cities so we decided to start this after school learning center to give them a chance to express themselves and find out their talents and see the world in a different way , open their eyes and find best ways to manage their very limited resources and protect the environment.

The goals of the Habiba Organization are to simulaneously provide opportunities for the next generation, as well as support the community in achieving a sustainable income from environmentally friendly farming practices.

2024 at Regenerative Agriculture in Sinai Desert

I spent 2 weeks at Habiba Farm. It was early summer, which means that the weather was hot and dry and not so many plants were growing. However, it was very exciting to see how the farm deals with the climate and the challenges and still manages to create a relatively green island in the middle of ...
