Age 18+
Las tortugas marinas son miembros importantes del ecosistema local: mantienen la dinámica de los arrecifes de coral, controlan el crecimiento de otras especies como las medusas y también son responsables de mantener los lechos de pastos marinos saludables. Lamentablemente, estas especies, y con ellas todo su ecosistema, se ven amenazadas por problemas como la destrucción de sus nidos por parte de personas que venden sus huevos, la construcción y desarrollo en sitios de anidación, la pesca extrema y en general la falta de conciencia sobre ellos en el ámbito local. comunidades cercanas a las playas donde anidan. Nuestro principal objetivo en este proyecto es colaborar en la protección de las diferentes especies de tortugas marinas que anidan en la zona, y conservarlas y su hábitat. 

Para alcanzar ese objetivo, los voluntarios realizan algunas tareas como:

Tareas nocturnas:
  • Monitoreo de sitios de anidación y playas
  • Vigilancia nocturna de nidos (esta suele durar entre 4 a 6 horas, donde te acompañará un grupo de trabajo que te asigne tu coordinador).
  • Protegiendo a las tortugas anidadoras
  • Registro de datos sobre las tortugas que anidan
  • Realización de recuentos de huevos
  • Identificando nidos
Tareas diurnas:
  • Liberar a la descendencia en la playa y recopilar datos
  • Limpiar la playa
  • Construcción de viveros
  • Ayudando en la reubicación de nidos
  • Trabajando en el huerto ecológico del sitio plantando diferentes hortalizas.

Typical day

Los voluntarios trabajan en este proyecto de lunes a viernes (de lunes a viernes) en el siguiente horario:

  • Turno de mañana: dura de 9:00 a 12:00; en este momento los voluntarios pueden ayudar en actividades de mantenimiento, trabajo en el huerto y otros.
  • Patrullajes: se realizan de 21:00 a 00:00, dependiendo de la cantidad de tortugas que llegan a la playa y las mareas en ese momento.

Costa Rica is a country with great biodiversity in flora and fauna. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It has well known provinces and unique characteristics such as:

  • Being surrounded by nature

Water Sports


In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak Spanish (basic level) or English (basic level)
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
We expect our volunteers to be very communicative with others at the site, willing to do tasks, empathetic, participative, and committed to the cause of helping turtles.
Additionally, volunteers must be in good physical shape, as some of the activities may require them being so.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

What's Included

  • Alojamiento durante tu estancia como voluntario (For all turtle projects, an overnight stay in the city of San Jose in Costa Rica is provided.)

Los voluntarios se alojarán en una casa de huéspedes junto a los proyectos. En esta casa, se le dará el uso de una cama en una habitación compartida, un comedor, una cocina, un baño común y un área para lavarse las manos. 

También vale la pena saber que la casa de huéspedes no tiene WiFi, el agua del grifo no es potable y no tiene electricidad (funciona con un generador).

Food & Beverages
Durante su estadía, se le proporcionarán tres comidas al día (desayuno, almuerzo y cena). 

  • Las comidas se preparan al estilo costarricense: en el desayuno puede esperar que le sirvan café, té, frutas, panqueques o cereales; en el almuerzo puede esperar que le sirvan arroz, frijoles, ensaladas, carnes, pastas, verduras o pescado; por último, durante las patrullas suelen servir tortitas y cereales.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. We assist you to find cheap flights to Costa Rica.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Costa Rica provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Costa Rica you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Costa Rica.

Details on arrival

The project is open on the times of year that turtles come nest in the area: March through August. Volunteers must arrive on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, as this makes their induction into the program significantly easier.

The organization charges its fees in EUR. The price table in USD is subject to currency fluctuation. Adventure Volunteer will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Adventure Volunteer during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
