Every Year in Nepal rice plantation starts around Mid-June and last for couple months, whereas the Rice harvesting starts in the early Oct and ends in the last of Nov. These 4 months are considered as the most important time in Nepal village. Farmers are very busy with their seasonal work. they keep themselves busy and active working in their fields which are considered as a food bank for their family, and it has been the way of life since many generations.

Either in June July a volunteer can support the village farmer to plant the rice or October November to harvest the rice.  both have a unique experience where you will work with locals in the field. it's a unique opportunity to learn the different way of farming and observe the traditional life full of happiness.  try the organic fruits and meals available in the areas, make a new farmer friend in another part of the world,  etc

June and July are rainy season which are always hit by a strong monsoon that travels from Bay of Bengal . that is how the farmers have enough water resources for the rice plantations whereas in Oct/ Nov the sky is crystal clear and already rain stops, and farmers are ready to harvest the rice.  while plantation or harvesting they use the Ox as means to plough the field or at time of harvesting.  you can learn the duty quickly since it is nothing complicated, but a good health is required in order to perform your best work in the field.

As a volunteer you can support the farmer and their family in Daly work that includes plough the field, making the field ready for rice plantations, or cutting the paddy while harvesting in order to safe land the grains in the farmers home which is the main lifeline for the whole years to the family.

Typical day

After a Breakfast you will get to the field with the host family and help to prepare the field ready for rice plantation if you are coming in June July whereas if you are working in harvesting time you will support cutting the paddy and bringing to the home and safely store the grains in house and the hay in barn.  these are the typical things you will perform under the family supervision; you will be feeded time to time as per the local standards.  roughly this will be the schedules

  • 6 AM: Wake up
  • 7 AM: Tea
  • 8 AM: Helping to feed the domestic animals like cow, buffalo, goats,
  • 9 AM: Lunch
  • 9:30 AM: go to the field like 5-10 minutes' walk from your home stay
