Highlights

Inspire vulnerable boys to change their lives for the better
Meet the funny, incredible boys we work with
Give these kids hope for better futures
Help the boys transition out of the slums
Provide much needed medical care
This program focuses on a group of boys who live on the streets of Kisenyi slum. We provide food, basic medical care and play games with them. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups
50+

Our slums program is in partnership with a local organization where we work with a group of vulnerable boys. The boys are aged 10-20 years and typically we have about 30-50 boys we work with. Many of them have run away from home due to mistreatment, poverty or death of parents. On the street they have to fight to survive against sleep deprivation, malnutrition, disease and abuse. We do a program with them where we gather them up, play music, dance and play games. Working with our local team we counsel them on decision making, the use of drugs, possibilities outside of the slums and their lives. Many have cuts and grazes which we treat and bandage. We also provide them with food, water and fruit. The biggest part of this is to ensure they know they have options and that there is people that care about them.

Typical day

This program is often done in conjunction with our medical program or after another program.

2pm: Meet at the clinic in Kisenyi to gather the boys

2:30pm: Start program with the boys, talk to them about their lives, get them up to answer questions, talk about alternative solutions
Gather anyone who needs wound care or medical attention and treat accordingly
Play music and dance

4:30pm: Distribute food and water

5pm: Depart slums

Free-time activities

In your free time there is many options for activities! A lot of our volunteers like to take extended weekends to do safari, gorilla trekking or adventure water sports. All of these are at the volunteers own cost, but are organised through our local partners to ensure the best price and experience. Our close proximity to Kampala means there is plenty of opportunity to explore the craft markets, eat local food and go to local events including soccer games. We encourage volunteers to travel on their weekends and will help arrange trips or activities.
