This program is designed for mature volunteers and families to assist at schools in local township and settlement communities. Volunteers can choose to participate in either a full or half day program that focuses on classroom help, sport programs, or both. Volunteer children can be involved in the primary schools and interact with local children while their parents help to facilitate the programs. Although it is not a requirement to have experience working in schools or sport programs, we welcome any adults with teaching or coaching experience to contribute their expertise to our programs.
We currently assist 10 schools and educares and reach 1562 children throughout Africa, the children are also fed nutritious meals at school. The goal with these projects is to give the children in underprivileged areas a positive start; we aim to promote an early love of learning and to prepare them for further education. For older children, SAVE provides sport incentive programs to encourage these youth to continue with their studies and become ambitious young adults.
SAVE takes a developmental approach to poverty reduction by targeting communities in need at all stages of life, from education and care in preschools, to sports and life skill development for pre-teens, and business skills development for adults. We believe that it is not enough to simply work with a single sector of the community, but it must be a holistic approach that will promote a change in the cycle of poverty.
Daily volunteers will spend the mornings at a School & Educare placement in the local township of Dunoon, assisting with the day-to-day operations of the establishment; daily tasks include helping to distribute meals, assisting the teachers with lessons, and orchestrating activities for the children. In the afternoons volunteers can participate in our various sports programs with the youth from the township/settlement, instructing activities such as swimming, surfing, skateboarding, and playing team sports.
As a volunteer you can arrange a number of activities to do in your free time such as skydiving, kloofing, quad-biking, sandboarding, and multi-day Western Cape tours. SAVE also runs weekly socials for our volunteers that can include bubble soccer, outdoor movie theatre, bowling, ice skating, etc. On weekends you can take the bus into town to explore the city of Cape Town or climb the iconic Table Mountain. We are located a mere 5 minutes walk away from the world famous Kite Beach in Tableview, as well as restaurants and public transit, so there is always something to do!
