The living conditions of many families in Guatemala are incomparable to those you know from industrialized countries. The poverty rate is very high and many people find it difficult to take care of themselves. As a volunteer you can do a lot with little effort here.

In this project, you'll be helping out at a daycare center in Antigua that looks after around 40 to 50 babies and children aged between 0 and 6 years. Daycare is especially important for single parents and market vendors who have to work all day to afford the bare necessities. So that the children do not stay home alone or are left unattended on the markets, they are looked after lovingly in the day care center.

As in many places in Guatemala, there is a shortage of adequate daycare facilities to provide the necessary nursing staff. The support of volunteers is therefore particularly welcome. As well as helping care for infants and children, as a volunteer you will make sure that the loved ones feel safe and secure and keep them happy with playful activities. Give every day a smile on the faces of Guatemala's future.

Typical day

At a daycare center in Antigua, you'll help local nurses with day-to-day childcare responsibilities. You help with caring for children and babies aged 0 to 6 years. These include tasks such as feeding and wrapping the little ones, supervision and entertainment of the slightly older children. To make the day-to-day more diverse, help organizing sports and leisure activities, create games, sing, paint and dance with children. To further develop the cognitive and motor skills of the little ones, you will also do activities of educational value and learning.

Your working hours are usually from 8:00 to 12:00 (may change!). The afternoons can be used to prepare games for the following day, to plan projects, or to discover the historic colonial city of Antigua.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

In your spare time, there are many different activities to choose from, such as visiting historic sights and museums around the city of Antigua. This wonderful colonial city is a real gem and offers plenty of touristic activities. Many volunteers also go to local bars and restaurants to socialize with friends. On the weekends you can take day excursions to get to know the amazing surroundings.

Among the most interesting things to do:

  1. City tour Antigua
  2. Handicraft markets from indigenous people
  3. Lake Atitlan
