Tanzania has a large group of young mothers in the villages that have little or no education and are without financial support.  Additionally, areas are often heavily populated, which complicates the strive of livelihood and provision for these Mother’ children.  Most of these women lack the opportunity to reach education or means to fund and develop small businesses.  Additionally, many of these women are under-empowered or unaware of their basic human rights, thus making young mothers vulnerable to abuse.

Art in Tanzania is focusing to deliver skills for women to start their own small businesses and to create markets for their products. At the same time, we educate women's rights and related subjects so that women will learn their rights in problem situations. We focus to be both innovative and effective.

Work with women is underfunded but Art in Tanzania has multi-professional interns and volunteers. We use teamwork to create opportunities. One can teach how to start horticulture and one can look for the markets. The base effort is to increase the small business skills through the educational approach and to increase awareness.  We also focus to give visibility of women's issues through social media for the Tanzanian general population.

Women groups programs are active after working hours as daytime the members are working at their own small businesses. The practical approach is a combination of vocational training activities to enhance their skills to run small businesses or to take over jobs. It is vocational English teaching, accounts, IT skills, small entrepreneurship training, and similar. Thereon we provide advocacy in women and children's rights, public health issues, and similar supportive matters.

Therefore the Women group program is the multi-professional approach of vocational teaching, micro-entrepreneurship skills training, advocacy work, media, and marketing for the products. Many volunteers and interns bring their own ideas and we are happy to test and implement them in Tanzania.

Typical day

Women are active with their own small businesses during the daytime. So morning and early afternoon is program planning and visibility work. Also looking for marketing outlets for women group products being mainly handicrafts.

Active time with the women starts around PM 4 when they arrive at the volunteer compound for training and advocacy sessions. Every participant has a weekly plan for each day which is then reported in weekly results so we can secure participants are active.

We are also developing programs where women produce handicrafts, grow herbs and perform other production at their homes day times and deliver products for the NGO for sales. These activities need guidance and supportive activities.
