    About the program

The Sustainable Farming & Environmental Conservation programme with TANF Ghana offers volunteers the opportunity to support local farmers while learning about sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation and rural livelihoods in Ghana.

Based in Oboadaka in Ghana’s Eastern Region, the programme connects volunteers with local farming communities where agriculture plays a vital role in supporting families and local development. Volunteers work alongside local farmers and community members, gaining practical experience while contributing to activities that promote sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.

Depending on the season and community needs, volunteers may assist with land preparation, planting, weeding, mulching, harvesting, composting and general farm maintenance. Pineapple is one of the major crops grown in the community, but volunteers may also gain exposure to other crops and farming practices.

Many local farmers, particularly experienced and older farmers, benefit from additional support with physically demanding activities. Volunteers can assist with farming tasks while learning from local knowledge and helping to strengthen sustainable rural livelihoods.

The programme also includes environmental conservation activities such as tree planting, composting, soil conservation, farm waste management, environmental awareness and community clean-up initiatives. These activities help promote healthier ecosystems and more sustainable farming practices within the community.

Volunteers who are interested in livestock farming may also have opportunities to visit or support local small-scale farmers involved in poultry, goats, sheep, pigs or other livestock, depending on availability.

No previous farming experience is required. We welcome volunteers who are enthusiastic, open-minded, willing to learn and interested in agriculture, sustainability, environmental conservation and community development.

TANF Ghana provides pre-arrival guidance, orientation, programme coordination and local support throughout the volunteer stay. Activities are supervised by local farmers, community members and TANF Ghana coordinators to ensure a safe, meaningful and rewarding experience.

This programme offers a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable farming, support local communities and contribute to environmental conservation while experiencing everyday life in rural Ghana.
