The founder of Sambhali Trust, Govind Singh Rathore, wants to ’give back’ to the community of his father and grandfather. Setrawa’s inhabitants are faced with many challenges including water shortages and cultivating dry land but also the lacking access to education.
Children in the village attend government schools, that are faced with a lot of problems:
Sambhali now wants to focus on supporting the government schools with volunteers to help the local teachers in English and Maths lessons. Volunteers are encouraged to improve the lesson quality by applying as many interactive teaching elements as possible and prepare workshops on general knowledge to extend the student’s knowledge.
In Setrawa, you will be able to explore rural life in the Thar Desert as well as Marwari culture. Govind turned his family home, Dev Bagh, into a Guesthouse in which tourists, volunteers and he will live in. Not only is the Guesthouse situated in a beautfiul rural setting, but volunteers also have the possibility of going on a ride with Govind’s horse to the dunes. Volunteers will have enough time to explore the surrounding Thar desert.
Volunteers coming to Setrawa should have a desire to live and work in a rural setting with basic amenities. There is no need to have prior experience in teaching, but certainly it would help your work in the schools. Volunteers should be able to improvise and be patient with their students as all of them are on various learning levels.
We will take care of your accommodation in Dev Bagh but it is your responsibility to take care of your flights, visa and vaccinations.
At our Dev Bagh Resort you can go horse riding with our horse Shanti that lives on the property. In the Setrawa village you have many different shops where you can get anything that you need for your daily life as well as shop clothes. You can also enjoy the beauty of the Thar Desert by going on a walk to the sand dunes. At Dev Bagh we have many comfortable spots where you can enjoy the quitness of the Desert by doing some Yoga and Meditation. In the Indian culture music plays an important role. For that reason you will be able to enjoy lots of Rajasthani music and dances. For a small additional fee you can go on a camel ride through the Desert organized by our neighbours. On the weekends you can take the local government bus, which only takes about 1,5 hours to go to Jodhpur to look around the city or visit the Fort.
Included in our fees is the accomodation at our beautiful Dev Bagh Resort in the middle of the Thar Desert. On top of that you will enjoy three home cooked meals every day and if you are not home ofr lunch we will provide you a lunchbox. We also provide transportation to our projects as well as a local volunteer coordinator who can help you with everything that you need.
The closest airport is located in Jodhpur, a city around 100km away from Setrawa. There you will be picked up and hosted at our Durag Niwas guesthouse in Jodhpur for approximately two days to have an orientation day and get to know India a little more before we take you to Setrawa.
Dev Bagh provides three home cooked meals every day. Using only the freshest ingredients we will give you a taste of many Rajasthani dishes. If you are at your project during lunch you will get a lunchbox from us.
