About the project

We run a school known as Samaritan Education Centre which provide free education for a maximum of 100 children from Kindergarten level to to Secondary education. The school was founded in September 2018 with the help of local and international volunteers who are regularly visit our project through out the year. We focus to provide better education to our children and help them to build their dreams. Through working together as a team work we will achieve our goals and make the world a better place to live.

The Placement

Our school operate from Monday to Friday and the daily schedule start from 8am to 6pm. Local teachers and volunteers have regular lessons for more than 100 children. In the morning from 8am to 12:30 afternoon we have lessons for Kindergarten children  with the age of 3 to 6 years old. These kids are very small and smart, they are eager and passionate to learn  from our happy volunteers.

 In the evening from 4pm to 6pm we also have other lessons for  older children from the age of 7 to 13 years old. These children are studying in public schools around our community and they come to our school during the evening to learn extra lessons which are also provided by our local teachers and our volunteers. Usually they learn English Language and Mathematics and also they have special lessons from our volunteers depends with the skills and knowledge of the volunteers . It's a free class for the volunteers to give lessons of their special skills , example a volunteer can teach Music lesson , computer lesson, social media lessons , hygiene lessons and many other lessons which a volunteer can provide to our children 


If I am volunteering with my partner, can we have a double room? We will do everything possible to accommodate the couple in the same room but everything depends on the availability of the room.


What should I bring with me?

  • A few t-shirts that cover your shoulders 
  • Comfortable shoes (to explore Chamazi/Tanzania) 

NOTE: if you are a volunteer at the Rawdhwa School (our only Muslim school), you will only be allowed to go to school wearing t-shirts that cover your shoulder and pants/skirts/dresses longer than your knee. We kindly ask to be prepared.

Daily Schedule for Volunteers

Volunteering programs start from 9am to 12:30pm where volunteers are helping in our Elementary school with the children from the age of 3 to 6 years old. You will be teaching and assisting our local teachers in different tasks and activities. These children are learning basic education which involve basic Mathematics, basic of English language, Reading and Writing, Arts, Health Care, basic of Swahili language as well as Sports and Games. For the volunteers with education skills and experience it’s a great opportunity for our local teacher to exchange method and tactics of giving lesson to our children which will help to improve both experience. For the volunteers with willing and passion to help our children they will be assisting our local teacher in different tasks like correcting the class works, taking care of the children, saving meals to the children, cleaning and washing dishes and playing with children different games.

In the evening from 4pm to 6pm we have lessons for older children from the age of 7 to 18 years old who are studying in public schools around our community. They usually come to our school to learn English language, Mathematics and Computer skills which are most difficult lessons for them in public schools. These lessons are controlled by volunteers and one local teacher where they get involved with these children and help them to improve their English language, Mathematics and Computer skills. It’s also a very interesting class since children in this class are very passionate and eager to learn from our volunteers

Volunteers are usually working 5 hours per day and 5 days per week. The school start from Monday to Friday. Friday is sport day and volunteers, teachers and children are usually learning and play different sports and games in our school play ground. 


Free-time activities

During weekends or Free times our volunteers have the opportunities to:

  • Browsing local Markets around Dar es salaam
  • Exploring the city of Dar es salaam (City tour) where we will visit different places around the city including City Centre, Fish market, Coco beach, national museum and cultural heritage ...

  • Browsing local Markets around Dar es salaam
  • Exploring the city of Dar es salaam (City tour) where we will visit different places around the city including City Centre, Fish market, Coco beach, national museum and cultural heritage places and many other places
  • Spend time at the beach. We have very nice beach in Dar es salaam where volunteers can  enjoy during weekends and free time 
  • Explore Mbudya and Zanzibar Island which are paradise islands which a lot of activities to do
  • Hiking in the Pugu Forest. It’s a very nice nature there and great view of the city of Dar es salaam on the top
  • Affordable Safaris. We usually help our volunteers with affordable Safari Company which they can visit different national park in Tanzania

Other Skills

We also looking for volunteers with other skills of social media, content writer, website design, maintenance, music skills and soccer. Our social media need constantly improvement as well as our website. We also have guitar and piano for volunteers with skills and experience with these instrument its a great place to share their knowledge. Our children like soccer too. Any volunteer with soccer skills are welcome to share with our children and they will be very happy

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 18:00

Services by Samaritan Volunteers

Program fees include: 

  • The cost of accommodation where we will provide you with a shared room ( One room for two volunteers of the same gender with private bed each ) Or private room according to the availability 
  • 3 meals per day which include light breakfast, light lunch and dinner. Our meals are mostly cooked food in our volunteer house. Our meals are prepared with a very highly hygiene with our kitchen staffs and all meals we prepare are safe for our volunteers. We also prepare special meals to our volunteers who have special diet. For special meals you have to contact us before you arrive for us to get to know about your diet.  We also have a good kitchen if a volunteer wants to prepare its own meals
  • Airport Pickup  and drop off 
Note : The Price doesn't cover the cost internet and drinking water. We normally use Simcard internet , when a volunteer will arrive we will help his/her to get a simcard and you can buy your own internet. The price of internet start from 5$ to 25$ depends with how much you spend for a month and also you can recharge internet if you will finish the previous one. For Drinking water you can buy in our nearby stores in our accommodation. The price for drinking water cost 0.5$ for One Littre and a half 

Airport Pickup at Julius Nyerere International Airport

We will pickup our volunteers the day of arrival. Our volunteers requires to book a flight to Dar es salaam international airport known as  Julius Nyerere international Airport. Our team is available 24 hours to pick our volunteers. 

We will also drop off the day of depart to our project.

Accommodation

  • Volunteers will be staying in our volunteers houses. We have the main house which has 3 Private rooms and 3 shared rooms and our second accommodation have 2 private room and 2 shared rooms. All the meals are at our main house . From our second accommodation to our main house it's 3 minutes walk
  • Our volunteer house is located in a very safe and peacefully community. Free walking around the village and people are very friendly and welcoming.
  • Our main school is 3 minutes walk from our main accommodation. Volunteers will be also working in other schools which are under our organization and they are located less than 3 kilometers from our main school and we will provide the transportation to our volunteers 
  • Surrounded by the nature, hills and slopes for nice view, Sunrise, Sunset and Stars are always available 
  • We have running water and electricity most of the time . Note that since the running water is for shared with neighbors in our community sometimes we run out of water for a minimum of 3 hours. During this time we have a reserve water near our washroom where volunteers can use it also .Sometimes  we also have shortage of power in all over our country. Volunteers may experience a power cut for a minimum of 5 to 6 hours or even more and its also happen in a very few times  

Food & Beverages

We provide three meals per day and mostly cooked food. Our volunteers will enjoy our local food which are cooked in a very good hygiene. We have different types of food which our volunteer will enjoy to eat. The most typical food here are rice, potatoes, pasta, wheat foods, meat, chicken, fish Ugali ( African food), eggs, bread and so many types of meals.

We provide different types of fruits which are included in daily meals. We have many types of fruits which our volunteers will enjoy while they are here in our project.

We also have a good kitchen if a volunteer wants to prepare its own meals.

Details on arrival

Volunteers are required to book the flight to Dar es Salaam international Airport which is close to our project. 

We will come pick you from the Airport to our accommodation with one of our staff team who will have a white paper written your name. 

Our project start from Monday to Friday. We expect volunteers to arrive on Saturday or Sunday and depart on Saturday.

We are available to host volunteers  through out the year. You can join us at any month from January to December

Meet your organization

Samaritan Volunteers is an Organization registered under the Non-Government Organization Act with Registration Number 00NGO/R/2581. The Organization based in providing and supporting education for children from low-income families in Chamazi community. We run a school know as Samaritan Education Centre which provide free education for a maximum of 100 children from kindergarten level to secondary education. The school was founded in September 2018 with the help of international volunteers who are regularly visit our project throughout the year. We are located in the South party of Dar es salaam region in a village called Chamazi. Our village is one of the safety place to be, people here are very friendly and welcoming and they always like to share our tradition and culture with people from abroad. The local life experience here is amazing since you will get immersed with our culture and experience the everyday life of locals

Our mission and vision is to ensure that every child in Tanzania wants to study and have the opportunities for that. We believe that a child future success and advancement in life is greatly influenced by their early educational experience as those who go to school early develop an interest in education more than those who have not participate in early learning education.

Our goals is every child to have access to a vibrant safe and stimulating place to study. Every neighborhood should have a modern school area that is suitable for children, whatever their family's income. We believe that education is a necessary and a human right, not a luxury. 

We are looking for volunteers international and local volunteers with education skills and those who are willing and passion to help and supporting education for our children. We are sure that truly helping children requires cultural exchanging with people from different countries and by inviting volunteers we will be able to improve the mindset and motivation of each and every child.
