Malindi is in Kilifi county at the north coast of Mombasa.  It is a tourist destination famous for the Watamu sandy beaches and historical places such as vasco da Gama pillar among others.

The economic activities in this area is fishing, tourism and subsistence farming. Despite being a tourist destination, this is one of the poorest counties in Kenya with low rates of education and high number of school drop out due to poverty subjecting the children to child pornography, prostitution and drugs.  It is against this backdrop that Mafanikio stepped in to join hands with the locals in order to promote education.

Eco-Green school has 106 children between the ages 7-14 who come from a community that is deprived of education.  They are in dire need of education as the source of hope and change in the community

Program include:
  • Living  at the volunteer house where meals, accommodation is provided
  • Teaching English, Maths, Environment, Hygiene & Nutrition, Music & Sports
  • Participating in community activities
  • Mentoring  the youth
  • Cultural interaction & integration
  • Join the local events and taste a local brew
The school is located in a village which is about 10 kilometers away from the city where the volunteer house is.  Therefore, there is commuting to and from from Monday to Friday. The mode of transport is mainly motorbikes at a fee of 1.5 euros per day.

Typical day

  • 8.00 classes begin
  • 9.15. school break for 10 minutes

  • 10.30 school breaks for 20 minutes
  • 12.00 lunch break
  • 3.30 games/sports
  • 4.00 school ends.

Lessons are in between and sometimes we have sports activities and community activities as well as meetings

Free-time activities

Free-time activities are not limited to the above. They also include home visiting the students where they live to see their lifestyle and also meet their parents.

Malindi being a coastal town attracts tourists from all over the world who enjoy water sports along the sea. Therefore, because of this, most water sporting activities can be costly and it is thus advisable to also refer to the Coordinator whenever the volunteer wants to do such sports in order to access them at a good price.

Despite the above fact, there are also public beaches for swimming and basking which are free of charge.

Over the weekend, the volunteer can also visit Mombasa city which is 2 hours away using public transport.

We also organize safaris to Tsavo National Park or Masai Mara Reserve on request.
