Overview
Volunteers are needed to help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia. You’ll be wisked away by boat to an island 45 minutes from mainland bali. Depending on the time of year, you’ll be collecting turtle population statistics, identifying turtle species, collecting eggs, monitoring nests or releases hatch lings into the sea.

Life on the island is authentic with the beach literally on your doorstep however volunteers must be prepared for a more basic standard of living with much less entertainment and attractions than on the main land.

Volunteers will also assist the local neighborhood schools with English teaching, environmental education and sports. There are few native English speaking locals so having the opportunity to practice English speaking is very helpful to the community.

Location
Volunteers will stay on the beautiful island of Nusa Penida. Think bright blue waters, private caves, lush jungle, waterfalls, incredible marine life and a laid back vibe. The island is full of adventurous things to do, such as trekking to stunning viewpionts, diving, snorkelling and island hopping. Volunteers stay in a dedicated volunteer house located in the village and only 5 mintues from the harbour.

Typical day

Monday – Welcome new arrivals, briefing and introduction, feeding, cleaning tanks, collecting seaweed, catching live food for turtles, beach cleaning
Tuesday – Cleaning, feeding the turtles and collecting seaweed, provide medicine for injured turtles
Wednesday – Cleaning, feeding the turtles, preparing lessons, creating toys for the turtles
Thursday – Cleaning, feeding, preparing lessons, visit to Cystal Bay (beautiful view here!), bonfire on the beach
Friday – Turtle release (depending on time of year), cleaning up the beach, farewell dinner (for those staying on, you can meet any new volunteers that may have arrived!)
Saturday – Program finishes after breakfast

Other activities you may take part in:
  • Cleaning the beach
  • Making garbage bins for the local area
  • Creating a Turtles/Environment campaign for the local area
  • Releasing injured turtles after treatment and cleaning private beaches
  • Light construction work: such as building turtle tanks, walls, painting the area
  • Collecting turtle information such as length of carapace, size of flippers, weight
Basic Schedule:

11AM: Lunch
2PM: Volunteering ends and you can relax at the house or explore the local sights
4-5PM: Work ends. Back to house or to explore the sights!

There is plenty of hiking on the island, with many beautiful beaches and viewpionts to reach.  Be sure to check out the main land of Bali too- Ubud, Mount Agung, the beaches of Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur or cycling and trekking tours on Mount Batur, visits to local temples and rice terraces.
