Unfortunately, many young people in vulnerable communities are stuck without any type of productive outlet. In most cases the kids suffer from traumatic events and need volunteers to play with them and remember that they are just kids.
We are looking for sensitive, approachable and playful individuals. We need creative volunteers with fun ideas for activities for the kids.
Here is what you can expect:
You will have the opportunity to either take care of babies in a nursery or wowrk with older kids creating your own activities with them including: art, educational games, singing, dancing, music and much more.
Children are between the age of 6 to 16
You will be working with our partner community daycares and centers
What the children need most of all is love and affection.
Typical day
08:30 - 10:30am Breakfast
09:00 - 11:00am placement before children's school
11:30am - 1:00pm lunch time
1pm - 5pm placement after children's school
After 6pm: free time
Free-time activities
Volunteers can enjoy a wide range of activities in the city or even a few hours away like hiking, hang gliding, surfing, samba parties, etc.. Usually volunteers go on trips together to famous places like Ilha Grande, Petrópolis, Paraty, Búzios and Trindade.

Requirements
In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
You need to speak English (fluently)

What's Included

**Please be aware that there is an extra fee of US$350 for those volunteers wishing to stay with us during New year's eve and/or Carnival. Carnival festival usually takes place in February or the beginning of March. Please get in touch if you are unsure about the dates for Carnival. It is also important to remember that during Carnival, all placements will close and no volunteer will be working during this week.
Please, let us know your flight information (arrival date, time, flight number and airport). All volunteers may arrive at Galeão International Airport (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU). For those volunteers arriving by land, we do not offer a pick up, but rather offer a drop off from our accommodation to the airport at the end of their program.
DISCOVERY HOSTEL is located in Gloria, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro!
Glória is a neighborhood of the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Located in the border area with the Central Zone and considered as the "first" neighborhood of the South Zone.
It is borders the neighborhoods of Lapa, Flamengo, Catete and Santa Teresa. Gloria is served by the Glória subway station, as well as being on the route of dozens of bus lines that run to all regions of Rio.
There are some of the city's main sights, such as: Flamengo Park (part), Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro and Marina da Glória that is a popular statrting point for boat tours.
This is a place that youou get the feeling that you are in a small town with a bohemian and alternative vibe! ;)
The services at the accommodation:

• Shared bedrooms with bunkbeds, lockers, a suitcase seller, e a fan or air conditioning.

-There are no laundry facilities at the hostel but volunteers can take their clothes to a local laundromat.
Please bear in mind that:
*Please bring your oun towels or you can rent them there for R$5,00 each. Also bring your oun locks to use in the lockers.
Breakfast is served everyday and includes: bread, butter, Brazilian cheese, juices, coffee. There is also a kitchen for the volunteers use free rein to cook any other meals.
Good access at the project site
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
The nearest airport is Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) in Rio De Janeiro. We assist you to find cheap flights to Brazil.
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Brazil provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Brazil you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Brazil.

This program is available every first and third Monday of every month with some exceptions: we always close the 2nd start date of every month of December -when we only work the two first weeks of the month due to the festive season-, also the 1st start date of January -when we only work the two second weeks of the month due to the festive season- and during the Carnaval week -when 3 weeks is the minimum period required-.
Also there is a surcharge during the Carnaval week.
