About the program

This is an in-country hands-on internship program with provided shared housing and local team support.

Interning at the Arcturos Environmental Center is a life-changing opportunity to work with wild animals in Greece and assist with the mission to protect and restore the biodiversity of Greece. ARCTUROS focuses on the conservation of large carnivores, such as brown bears and wolves, as well as the conservation and management of mountainous ecosystems in Greece and in the Balkans and in addition, breed and donate Hellenic shepherd dogs to stock-breeders in an attempt to help them deal with damages that may be caused by wild carnivores. There are currently 14 research projects/internships that international students can chose from: Animal Husbandry, Wolf/Brown Bear/Lynx Behaviour, Field Research (wetlands surveys, activity patterns, population dynamics, nesting, species diversity/density etc) and to participate in public awareness campaigns.

This program is important because together we will:

  • Conduct environmental research and the protection of wildlife fauna /natural habitats.
  • Help with the conservation efforts of endangered species.
  • Learn about the rehabilitation processes of wild animals.
  • Assist with the mission to protect and restore the biodiversity of Greece.
  • Participate in events that aim to raise public awareness of environmental issues.
The team consists of experts and veterinarians actively involved in wildlife conservation efforts “in situ” and “ex situ”. All staff are bilingual and some of which have completed their veterinary training abroad, eliminating any language barriers and offering international expertise. Our Wildlife Research internship program offers volunteers of any background the opportunity to gain top quality experience interning on the Arcturos Environmental Center. With valuable experience, you’ll develop your skills and understanding of different conservation aspects.

Internships start on Mondays (with arrival on a Sunday) and interns have a choice to participate to a program between a minimum of 4 weeks or up to a maximum of 12 weeks .

For this program the participants need to be physically fit and able to undertake manual labor, enjoy practical activities, work quickly and reliably both as part of a team and independently, have good oral and written communication skills, be safety aware.

As for Greece, perhaps there is no need for an introduction. It is one of the most popular and safest destinations in the world. Situated in southeast Europe it is blessed with sun, friendly people, rich cuisine and a truly unique landscape that spans from green forests to the deep blue sea. With its 2,500 years of history and its 1,400 islands there is plenty to discover in Greece and it will satisfy the most demanding visitor. Greece is one of the warmest countries in Europe with long, hot & dry summers and mild winters. The popular time to visit Greece is between May to September end. Occasionally heatwaves may occur with temperatures peaking (1-2 days) around 105°F / 41°C.
