    Project Laut Conservation Divemaster Internship

The Conservation Divemaster Internship at Project Laut is an intensive, professional training programme designed for divers who want to progress efficiently to Divemaster level while gaining meaningful conservation experience.

We are an award-winning SSI Diamond & Blue Oceans Training Centre and Instructor Training Centre, delivering high-quality training in small groups with a strong focus on competence, responsibility, and environmental awareness.

This programme is designed specifically for divers who don’t have the time to commit to a 2–4 month internship, but who still want to complete their Divemaster training properly - not by simply ticking boxes. Because of the shorter timeframe, the programme is intensive and focused, and it requires a higher level of preparation, motivation, and personal responsibility. Candidates are expected to put in extra effort before and during the programme to ensure they meet SSI professional standards within the limited time available.

A Typical Training Day (Tuesday – Saturday)

The short Divemaster programme at Project Laut is structured, intensive, and dynamic, designed to make the most of limited time. Each week follows a clear rhythm, combining academic sessions, pool workshops, training dives, experience dives, and selected conservation activities. Schedules remain flexible and adapt to sea and weather conditions.

    General Schedule
    • Start time: typically 08:00

    • End time: usually 15:00–16:00

    • Days off: Sunday and Monday

    Diving Days

On diving days, candidates meet at the scheduled time to prepare equipment and objectives before heading out by boat. Days typically include two to three dives, focused on:

    • Divemaster-level skills and professionalism

    • Training and experience dives

    • Applied ecology and conservation-related activities

After returning, structured debriefings are held to review dives, decision-making, and overall performance.

    Pool & Classroom Days

Pool and classroom days focus on skill development and academic learning:

    • Morning pool workshops to practise and refine Divemaster-level skills

    • Classroom sessions covering specialty academics, Divemaster theory, and ecology modules

    • Time allocated for knowledge reviews, presentations, and course requirements

These days are essential for building consistency, confidence, and professional competence.

    Conservation Elements

As part of the programme, candidates contribute to ongoing conservation efforts, linked to Project Laut’s coral reef restoration site and wider Blue Oceans initiatives. The emphasis is on understanding, awareness, and responsible engagement, integrated into professional dive training.

    Flexibility & Expectations

While the structure is clear, the programme remains adaptable to environmental conditions. Due to the short timeframe, days are full and focused, and candidates are expected to arrive prepared and ready to train at a professional pace.

Each day is designed to develop real Divemaster competence - not just to complete certifications.

    Programme Dates & Start Cycles

Our programmes run year-round with rolling start dates, except during Christmas week. Each programme begins on a Tuesday, with training weeks running from Tuesday to Saturday.

    Internship Cycles

We run six internship cycles per year, designed to accommodate divers at different training levels and backgrounds. Interns are grouped according to their current certification and experience, with separate start dates aligned to each programme pathway.

Our block-style start dates create a structured learning environment, allowing interns to progress through training alongside peers at a similar skill level.

    Enrolment & Start Date Enquiries

Due to limited capacity and the tailored nature of our programmes, exact start dates vary for each cycle. To begin the process and discuss suitable start dates, prospective interns are encouraged to apply via Volunteer World.

Once we’re in touch, we’ll help you select the cycle that best fits your availability and diving level.

    Arrival in Bali

Please plan your flights to arrive at Denpasar International Airport (DPS). For a smooth start, we recommend arriving on Nusa Penida at least one day before your program begins.

    Transport & Accommodation

We offer optional transport add-ons to make arrival simple, including airport pick-up in Bali and boat transfers to Nusa Penida.

For accommodation, we work closely with a range of trusted local homestays that offer affordable weekly and long-term stays. This gives you flexibility to choose a place that suits your budget and comfort level while supporting the local community.

If you choose not to book transport through us, you will need to arrange all transport independently, including airport transfers, boat tickets, and island pick-up with your accommodation.

    Accommodation

We are happy to recommend partner homestays offering simple, comfortable rooms and good long-term rates. Most are locally run and within easy reach of the Training Centre. Details and recommendations are shared once your booking is confirmed.

    Getting Around on Nusa Penida

Most volunteers get around by renting a scooter. Scooter rentals are widely available through homestays and bungalows across the island.

    Pre-Arrival Preparation

For this Divemaster programme, all e-learning must be fully completed before arrival. You will be registered for your courses in advance and given access to all learning materials so you can finish the academic requirements prior to the start of training.
