    Many underserved communities face challenges such as:

    • Poor or deteriorating school infrastructure

    • Limited access to safe water facilities

    • Lack of regular maintenance for community assets

    Construction and maintenance support helps extend the life of these facilities, improves safety, and ensures that development projects remain functional and sustainable.

    Key responsibilities

    A Construction and Maintenance Assistant may:

    • Support minor construction activities (e.g., school repairs, simple structures, painting)

    • Assist with maintenance of boreholes, water points, and sanitation facilities

    • Help with basic carpentry, masonry, or landscaping tasks

    • Prepare and organize tools and materials

    • Participate in community clean-up and renovation days

    • Work alongside skilled local artisans and project staff

    Skills and qualities

    You don’t need to be a professional builder, but the following help:

    • Willingness to do hands-on, physical work

    • Basic practical or technical skills (helpful but not required)

    09:00 – Morning work session
    Participate in hands-on tasks such as:

    • Painting classrooms

    • Basic plastering or repairs

    • Cleaning and maintaining facilities

    • Assisting with simple construction tasks

    You will work alongside local artisans, staff, and community members.

    12:30 – Lunch break
    Return to the volunteer house or eat at the project site, depending on the day’s schedule.

    14:00 – Afternoon session
    Continue with light tasks such as:

    • Preparing materials or tools

    • Creating classroom displays

    • Cleaning and organizing work areas

    • Community engagement or short educational activities

    16:00 – End of project work
    Return to the volunteer house. The rest of the day is free for:

    • Cultural exchange

    • Visiting the local market

    • Language learning

    • Relaxing or exploring the area

    18:30 – Dinner
    Shared dinner with other volunteers and staff.

    Evenings
    Free time for social activities, reflection, or planning for the next day. Some evenings may include cultural activities or community visits.

    Weekends are usually free for rest, cultural trips, or independent travel.

    Our services include:

    Participant contributions are allocated transparently to ensure maximum impact.

    Recogida en el aeropuerto Kotoka International Airport

    Volunteers can arrive at Kotoka International Airport (Accra), or Tamale Airport. 

    A staff member from Future for Africa will meet the volunteer at the airport arrival area and assist with transportation.

    Travel details:

    • From Accra Airport our team will pick volunteers up. We will provide full guidance the arrive safely at the volunteer house. 

    All pickup arrangements are coordinated in advance to ensure a safe and smooth arrival.

    Alojamiento

    Future4Africa has a volunteer house located at the Yikene.
    The house has almost all the basic facilities you need and there is an opportunity to interact with other participants from all over the world and the wider community.


    Accommodation

    Volunteers will stay at the Future for Africa Volunteer House located in the Yikene, Bolgatanga. The house is in a quiet and safe neighborhood, close to small shops, markets, and essential services.

    The volunteer house includes:

    • Shared bedrooms with comfortable beds

    • Clean bed sheets and pillows provided

    • Shared indoor bathrooms with running water

    • Electricity and fans in all rooms

    • A common living area for relaxation and interaction with other volunteers

    • A secure environment where volunteers can keep personal belongings

    • Basic kitchen and dining facilities

    There are small shops and mobile money/ATM services within a short walking or driving distance from the house.

    The accommodation provides a great opportunity to connect with volunteers from different countries while experiencing the local culture and community.

    Volunteers are provided three meals per day along with safe drinking water.

    Meals are mostly local Ghanaian dishes, giving volunteers the opportunity to experience authentic cuisine. Typical meals may include:

    • Rice with stew or vegetables

    • Beans and plantain

    • Yam or potatoes with sauce

    • Light soups with local staples

    Fresh fruits are often available depending on the season.

    We can also accommodate basic dietary requirements, such as:

    • Vegetarian meals

    • Reduced-spice options

    Volunteers with specific dietary needs or allergies should inform us in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.

    Our Construction & Maintenance project runs year-round, so you can join at any time that suits you.

    Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport (Accra) or Tamale Airport, a member of the Future for Africa team will pick you up and transfer you to your accommodation.

    Once settled, a project timetable will be provided, outlining your daily schedule, tasks, and any community activities to ensure a smooth start and meaningful volunteer experience.

    You will also receive an orientation on local customs, safety, and project goals before starting your hands-on work.
