OVERVIEW OF THE CORAL RANGER PROGRAM

⚠️This Training is Specially included for your role & in your time volunteering with us & is mandatory if you want deep involvement with corals.

Learn Coral Restoration Through Real Conservation Work.

The Coral Ranger Program at One Ocean Empire is an intensive, hands-on marine conservation training experience designed for individuals who want to learn how coral reefs are restored and protected in the real world.

Our conservation centre is located on remote Usukan Island in Sabah, Borneo, where we have spent the past 9 years restoring degraded reefs through organic coral propagation methods. These reefs face increasing pressure from:

    • Ocean warming and coral bleaching
    • Human impact on coastal ecosystems
    • Declining reef resilience and biodiversity
    • Limited local access to marine conservation training

Rather than relying on artificial reef structures or large-scale interventions, our approach focuses on organic coral propagation, natural reef recovery, and long-term ecological monitoring.

The Coral Ranger Program allows participants to learn these techniques directly in the field, while contributing to an active reef restoration project.

This is not a classroom course. It is a practical training program embedded within a functioning conservation centre.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in coral propagation, reef ecology, marine monitoring, and responsible marine stewardship.

What if you could spend 2 days learning how to restore coral reefs the way nature intended? Not by zip-tying fragments onto metal frames. Not by installing artificial structures. But by understanding coral biology deeply enough to work with the ocean — not against it.

The Outcome (What You’ll Walk Away With) by the end of this immersive 2 Day Training + Volunteering you will

    • Understand how coral ecosystems actually function (beyond what most divers know)
    • Know how to ethically harvest coral fragments without damaging reef systems
    • Confidently select and prepare natural ocean-derived substrates
    • Learn how to plant coral fragments without artificial frames or structures
    • Apply strict reef-safe handling and risk management protocols
    • Receive a Coral Ranger Certification of Completion
    • Earn an Scuba Schools International Snorkel Diver license

    What You’ll Learn (Step-by-Step)

1️⃣ Coral Biology — What Corals Really Are & How they work

2️⃣ Ethical Coral Harvesting Techniques & how we find them

3️⃣ Why we use Natural Substrate & why man-made ones are not effective long-term

4️⃣ The Coral Ranger Toolbox (everything we use to plant corals)

5️⃣ Nursery Building (Subject to Island Conditions & Not always Guaranteed)

6️⃣ Safety & Risk Management when Handling Corals

⚠️80% of our Training is Hands On, 20% in Classroom.

    YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Monica Chin, Founder & Lead Coral Ranger Instructor

Guided by strict methodology and field-based conservation principles, Monica ensures every participant understands not just how to plant coral — but why each step matters.

    WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As a Coral Ranger participant, you may assist with the following activities:

    • Participating in guided coral propagation dives or snorkel sessions (depending on weather)
    • Assisting with coral fragment collection under supervision
    • Planting coral using our organic system under supervision
    • Observing coral growth and survival during monitoring sessions
    • Assisting with reef surveys and ecological observations
    • Learning safe water practices during conservation dives/snorkels
    • Supporting basic reef maintenance activities (removing trash, etc..)

Activities are conducted under supervision of the conservation team to ensure safety and ecological responsibility.

⚠️ Not every activity happens every day. Conservation work depends on weather conditions, tides, reef conditions, and project priorities.

    WHERE YOU'LL BE TRAINING

The Coral Ranger Program takes place at our conservation centre on Usukan Island, located along the northern coast of Sabah, Borneo.

    The island environment includes:

    • Coral reefs directly accessible from the centre
    • Mangrove and coastal ecosystems
    • Clear tropical waters with high marine biodiversity

    Our conservation centre operates:

    • Fully off-grid (solar energy)
    • With rainwater harvesting systems
    • Within a remote island environment

This setting allows Coral Rangers to experience reef conservation directly within the ecosystems they are helping restore.

    WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

During the program, you will interact with:

    • Our local Sabah-based staff members at our Conservation Centre
    • Community members and youth trainees involved in conservation programs (on some days)
    • International volunteers and interns working at the centre

We operate as a collaborative team environment, where respect, safety, and responsibility are essential.

    PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS:

This program is designed for individuals who are:

    • Comfortable in ocean environments
    • Willing to learn through hands-on field activities
    • Respectful of marine ecosystems
    • Able to follow safety instructions carefully
    • Comfortable with simple, remote island living conditions

Marine conservation work depends heavily on:

    • Weather conditions
    • Ocean visibility
    • Tides and currents
    • Reef safety conditions

Because of this, some days may involve more water activities, while other days may focus on education, reef observation, or maintenance tasks. Flexibility and patience are important. The goal is to provide real exposure to how marine conservation work actually operates, not a scripted tourism experience.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US

Participants in the Coral Ranger Program will receive:

    • Guided coral restoration training
    • Safe supervision during marine activities
    • Practical conservation experience in a real project
    • Introduction to reef ecology and marine conservation methods
    • Integration into a conservation-focused community environment

By the end of the program, Coral Rangers will leave with:

    • A deeper understanding of coral reefs and marine ecosystems
    • Hands-on exposure to coral propagation techniques
    • Greater awareness of the challenges facing coral reefs globally
    • Experience contributing to a real reef restoration project

    WHAT TO BRING

Here is a list of items we recommend bringing for the Coral Ranger Program:

    • Reef-Safe Sunscreen (Must Have) Reason: Protect your skin while ensuring no harmful chemicals enter the reef ecosystem.
    • Swimwear (Must Have) Reason: Required for coral propagation dives or snorkel activities.
    • Rash Guard / Long Sleeve Swim Shirt (Recommended) Reason: Protection from sun exposure during long hours in the water.
    • Personal Mask & Snorkel (Optional) Reason: While we provide equipment, many participants prefer using their own.
    • Water Bottle (Must Have) Reason: Staying hydrated while reducing plastic waste on the island.
    • Power Bank (Optional) Reason: Electricity is solar powered and limited.
    • Personal Towel (Optional) Reason: Useful after water activities or showers.
    • Light Outdoor Clothing (Must Have) Reason: The island climate is tropical and warm year-round.
    • Cash (Must Have) Reason: Remote island environment with limited payment facilities.
    • Personal Snacks (Optional) Reason: If you prefer additional food between meals.

A complete pre-arrival guide with travel details and preparation tips will be provided once your stay is confirmed.

    FREE TIME ON THE ISLAND

Life at One Ocean Empire is intentionally simple. The island is remote, quiet, and surrounded by nature — which means your free time looks very different from city life. It’s less about entertainment, and more about presence, connection, and slowing down.

Below is what you can expect during your time off:

    🌊 Swim & Ocean Time

The sea is right at your doorstep. Many volunteers choose to go for a swim to cool off after a work session or simply float and relax. The waters around the island are calm during suitable conditions, making it a refreshing way to unwind.

Sunsets by the shoreline are often a highlight of the day.

    🌴 Hammock & Relaxation

You can unwind in a hammock by the beach, read a book, journal, listen to music, or simply enjoy the sound of the waves. With limited internet and no city distractions, many volunteers find this to be a rare opportunity to mentally reset.

This environment naturally encourages rest and reflection.

🎲 Board Games & Social Time

Evenings are often spent together in shared spaces. Volunteers frequently:

    • Play board games

    • Share stories and travel experiences

    • Discuss conservation topics

    • Plan future adventures

The small group setting creates strong bonds and meaningful conversations.

    🐒 Optional Wildlife Experience (Self-Paid)

If you wish to explore beyond the island, optional self-funded excursions can be arranged through our trusted partners. One popular experience is a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River, known for its rich biodiversity.

On a cruise, you may have the opportunity to spot:

    • Proboscis monkeys

    • Hornbills

    • Crocodiles

    • Other native Bornean wildlife

Please note: These excursions are not included in the volunteer program fee and are arranged separately at your own cost.

🌅 What Free Time Is Really Like Here

    There are:

    • No nightclubs

    • No shopping malls

    • No fast internet streaming

    Instead, you’ll experience:

    • Star-filled night skies

    • Ocean sounds instead of traffic

    • Shared meals and simple living

    • Real connection with people and nature

Free time on the island is about embracing a slower rhythm. Many volunteers leave realizing that this simplicity — away from constant notifications and noise — becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their experience.

If you come expecting luxury or city entertainment, this may not be for you.
If you come open-minded and ready to disconnect from routine life, your free time here will feel deeply rewarding.

    Alojamiento

    VOLUNTEER ACCOMODATION

Volunteers stay in private rooms within a traditional longhouse built on stilts, offering an authentic island experience. Each room is fully solar-powered, featuring a fan, a phone charging station, and a comfortable bed. Mosquito nets are provided for protection, and all lighting on the island is kept dim at night to safeguard local wildlife—practicing our “let night be night” approach.

    BATHROOM & SHOWER

Bathrooms and showers are simple but clean, powered entirely by rainwater—don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe to use! Showers are limited to twice a day to help conserve water, so volunteers are asked to avoid over-showering and to be mindful of water use. Similarly, the bathroom is designed to prevent wastage, helping us maintain the delicate island ecosystem.

    COMMUNAL SPACES & ISLAND LIFE

The longhouse has open-air lounges where volunteers can relax, enjoy the views of the surrounding forest and coastline, and connect with fellow volunteers. Meals are prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, giving you a taste of the island’s flavors. Waking up to birdsong and gentle waves is part of everyday life here, making your stay peaceful and immersive.

This setup strikes a balance between comfort and sustainability, letting volunteers focus on conservation work while living in harmony with nature.

    Detalles a la llegada

    START DATE

Your start date refers to the first official day of volunteering on the island, not the day you arrive in Kota Kinabalu.

Volunteers must arrive in Kota Kinabalu at least one day before their program start date. This ensures sufficient time for rest, preparation, SIM card setup, purchasing supplies, and coordinating your transfer to the island.

    Example
If your program start date is Monday, you should arrive in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday (or earlier).

Transfers to the island are arranged according to scheduled coordination days. You will receive confirmation of your transfer timing the moment you arrive at the Home Office.

    ARRIVAL OVERVIEW

Your journey will look like this:

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) → Home Office (Kota Kinabalu City) → Jetty Kastam Lama → One Ocean Nature Conservation Centre

There is no airport pick-up provided. Please read the steps carefully below.

📌STEP 1: ARRIVE AT KOTA KINABALU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BKI)

After landing at BKI, you are responsible for arranging your own transport to our Home Office in Kota Kinabalu city.

We strongly recommend downloading the Grab e-hailing app before arrival. Grab is widely used in Sabah and is the easiest way to book a safe and affordable ride from the airport.

    You may choose to:

    • Stay in Kota Kinabalu city independently, or

    • Stay at our Home Office (subject to availability and prior arrangement)

The Home Office acts as the official meeting point before transfer to the island. All volunteers must report here before departure.

📌STEP 2: HOME OFFICE TO JETTY KASTAM LAMA

On your scheduled transfer day, our team will arrange taxi transport from the Home Office to Jetty Kastam Lama (you don't need to pay anything for this!)

Travel time by road: approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic.

NOTE: This transfer (taxi + boat) is covered as part of your program logistics.

During the road journey, you may request short stops at:

    • ATM machines

    • Gas stations

    • Supermarkets

    • Banks

Please ensure these stops are reasonable and not significantly out of route.

    Important:
Prepare sufficient cash in advance. Once you reach Jetty Kastam Lama, the nearest ATM is approximately 30 minutes away by car, and card payments are rarely accepted in this area.

📌STEP 3: JETTY KASTAM LAMA TO CONSERVATION CENTRE

From Jetty Kastam Lama, a local fishing boat will transfer you to the island where the conservation centre is located on Usukan Island.

    Boat journey duration: 15–20 minutes.

    Please note:

    • Wear slippers or footwear that can get wet.

    • You may need to step into shallow water when boarding or disembarking.

    • Keep electronics inside a dry bag or waterproof backpack.

Sea and weather conditions may occasionally affect departure timing. Flexibility is required.

    END OF YOUR VOLUNTEERING

Depending on your flight details, you will depart back to One Ocean Home Office via:

    • Taxi (we will arrange this for you & you do not have to pay)

    • Boat Tranfer (we will arrange this for you & you do not have to pay)

NOTE: If your flight is on the day where you volunteer period ends, you will depart 1 day before the day of your flight to prevent delays & trouble

    Example:
2nd January: Volunteering ends & flight at 3pm

You will depart on the 1st of January

IMPORTANT PRE-ARRIVAL PREPARATION (WE WILL SEND YOU A PRE-ARRIVAL GUIDE)

    1. Cash

Cash is essential. On the island and in rural areas, card payments are unreliable or unavailable. Please prepare small denominations where possible.

    2. Internet & SIM Card

There is no Wi-Fi on the island, and network coverage is limited.

We strongly recommend purchasing a local Malaysian SIM card in Kota Kinabalu city before transfer. Based on previous volunteer experience, Celcom (Blue Edition plan) provides the most reliable coverage in the area.

Set up and top up your SIM card in the city before departure. Self-top-up without a local bank account may not work.

    3. Luggage & Packing

You will be living in a remote, solar-powered conservation centre.

    Expect:

    • Limited electricity (charging allowed only during specific hours)

    • No hot water

    • Rainwater showers

    • Simple shared living facilities

    Bring essential items such as:

    • Hiking shoes

    • Slippers

    • Reusable water bottle

    • Mosquito repellent

    • Dry bag

    • Modest clothing for rural areas

    • Personal toiletries

Purchase any missing items in Kota Kinabalu city before transfer, as supplies are not available on the island.

    4. Travel Responsibility

Your program fee does not include:

    • Flights

    • Airport transfers

    • Personal travel insurance

    • Visa fees

    • Medical expenses

    • Personal equipment rental

    • Optional training programs or certifications

All volunteers are responsible for securing appropriate travel and medical insurance before arrival.
