    Sobre el programa

For nearly two decades, the Rhino Care and Conservation project has offered volunteers a rare, behind-the-scenes experience at the world’s largest orphaned rhino sanctuary. Normally closed to the public, the rhino sanctuary opens its doors to volunteers who play an active role in supporting daily care and conservation work. You’ll witness firsthand the devastating impact of poaching, while contributing directly to the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, and release of orphaned and injured rhinos.

This is not just a volunteer placement—it’s a chance to be part of one of Africa’s most important conservation efforts, helping ensure that rhinos survive and thrive in the wild.

Rhinos are among the most endangered animals on Earth, their populations devastated by relentless poaching and habitat loss. Poachers kill rhinos for their horns, which fetch staggering prices on the black market despite having no proven medicinal value. As natural grazers and browsers, rhinos play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems that support countless other species. Beyond their ecological importance, they are an integral part of Africa’s natural heritage and a major draw for eco-tourism, which in turn provides essential income and opportunities for surrounding communities. Protecting rhinos means preserving biodiversity, safeguarding cultural and natural heritage, and ensuring that future generations can experience these magnificent animals in the wild.

Protecting rhinos means preserving biodiversity, safeguarding cultural and natural heritage, and ensuring that future generations can experience these magnificent animals in the wild.

As part of the daily rhino sanctuary operations, you’ll assist experienced staff with the care of young rhino orphans.

Volunteer tasks with the young rhino orphans may include:

    • Preparing milk and bottle-feeding
    • General husbandry and boma care
    • Dry feed preparation and maintenance
    • Conducting health checks and behavioural observations
    • Assisting with cleaning and facility care ensuring a hygienic and safe environment for the rhinos

Because the rhino sanctuary’s long-term goal is always to return rhinos to the wild, direct hands-on contact with the rhino orphans is limited to essential care only. The priority is their well-being and successful release back into the wild. Working with megaherbivores is serious and potentially dangerous, so for your own safety, all volunteers must follow strict rules and guidelines.

The Rhino Care and Conservation volunteer project is a hands-on, challenging program that demands dedication, long hours and it is physically demanding, so volunteers should have a reasonable level of fitness to fully participate. But the reward is life-changing: you’ll leave knowing you’ve played a direct role in safeguarding a species under threat, while gaining invaluable insight into wildlife conservation and the urgent fight against poaching.

You are welcome to take photos and videos to capture your experience. For the safety of the rhinos and staff, we kindly ask that you do not share them on social media and ensure all location settings are turned off.

Please be aware that all volunteer duties and activities are based on the need at the time and that working with wildlife is very unpredictable and not guaranteed. Volunteers need to be adaptable and assist with the need and focus at the time.

Beyond orphan care duties, volunteers may also take part in other duties and activities depending on their stay duration:

The day begins at 06h00 with everyone meeting in the communal area for early morning coffee and rusks. Shortly afterwards, between 06h15 and 06h30, there is a daily briefing and program overview before heading to the bomas. Morning tasks start around 06h30 and usually include preparing feed for the animals (such as bottles and pellets), cleaning out the night pens, and weighing and preparing teff or lucerne feed bags.

At 09h00, volunteers enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast before continuing with boma duties at 09h30. These may involve assisting with mud wallows, carrying out biometrics and animal health checks, bush clearing and de-weeding of camps, or seasonal animal observations. Every few days, there are also educational presentations on important topics, such as the differences between black and white rhinos, the poaching crisis, rhino nutrition and health, and wound management.

The mid-morning animal feeds take place at 11h00, followed by kitchen clean-up duties at 12h00. Lunch is served at 12h30, and then at 13h30 the afternoon activities begin. These vary from day to day and may include further assistance at the bomas, preparing for feeds, heading out on the reserve to capture animal data, spending time with the Mounted Unit horses, or visiting the K-9 anti-poaching unit.

At 15h00, it’s time for the next round of animal feeds, followed by wrapping up the day’s tasks around 16h00 and returning to the cabins. Some afternoons offer additional experiences, such as game drives through the reserve, guided bushwalks, or birdwatching. Dinner is served at 18h00, after which evening activities begin at 19h00. These can range from a welcome bonfire on Tuesdays to s’mores nights or even scorpion hunts.

Please note that working with wildlife is unpredictable, and while we do our best to follow the outlined schedule, it may change depending on the needs on the ground at the time.

We don’t have assigned days off. Generally, volunteers let us know when they’d like to take a break. Extra activities are also planned for volunteers, usually over weekends.

We do advise volunteers to try and spend a few extra days in the area after or before their project as there is so much to do! The surrounding areas of this part of Mpumalanga province offer a rich mix of natural beauty, wildlife experiences, and cultural heritage, making them ideal for sightseeing and day safaris. Nelspruit serves as a convenient gateway to Kruger National Park, where visitors can enjoy full-day safaris to spot the Big Five, private guided tours tailored to photography or birdwatching, and shorter morning drives that capture early wildlife activity. The nearby Panorama Route features breathtaking landscapes such as Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, and Mac-Mac Falls, while the Graskop Gorge Lift offers unique forest canopy views and walking trails. Barberton itself is renowned for the Makhonjwa Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, and historic gold mining tours. Whether exploring wildlife, scenic drives, or cultural sites, visitors can enjoy unforgettable experiences, making it essential to book tours in advance and prepare with comfortable clothing, sun protection, and a camera.
