    Sobre el programa

Join RAREC’s education volunteer program for 1–4 weeks and support classes for children and teenagers in the Peruvian Amazon. You’ll help teach English, computer skills, arts, sciences and conservation through classroom and outdoor activities. No previous teaching experience is required; bring patience, curiosity and a willingness to learn and work as a team.

    The project

Education is a crucial part of RAREC’s mission to protect Amazonian wildlife and support coexistence between people and the rainforest. Our community program helps young learners build practical skills, explore scientific questions and understand the environment around them. Volunteers support ongoing classes while gaining experience teaching across language and cultural differences.

    Your role

Working alongside our Education Coordinator, you may:

    • Prepare teaching materials and help organize activities.

    • Support individual students or small groups.

    • Assist with classroom management and games.

    • Lead parts of existing lessons, progressing to full classes when appropriately prepared.

    • Suggest activities and help improve materials through classroom feedback.

Your responsibilities will reflect your experience, interests and length of stay. You are welcome to share ideas, but volunteers are not expected to design complete learning modules. You’ll also help keep classrooms, equipment and teaching resources organized.

    What you can expect

You’ll begin by observing or assisting with classes, then gradually take on greater responsibility as your confidence grows. Our Education Coordinator will provide training, review teaching materials and offer regular guidance on lesson preparation, classroom management and adapting activities to different ages and abilities.

Alongside teaching, you’ll have opportunities to practice Spanish and learn about Amazonian conservation through talks and nature walks. Other activities, including a visit to the Itaya River, depend on availability and the length of your stay.

Your placement ends with a review of your teaching development and an opportunity to share feedback on your experience.

    Día típico

Your day begins with breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by activities based on the education program’s schedule.

On weekdays, mornings include lesson preparation and, as our school English classes begin, visits to local schools to support children’s learning. You’ll work with the Education Coordinator to prepare materials and deliver activities suited to the students’ ages and abilities.

During afternoon classes, you’ll support children and teenagers as they learn English and computer skills, assisting small groups or leading activities suited to your experience.

On Saturdays and Sundays, children and teenagers join us at RAREC for English, arts, sciences and conservation activities. These sessions combine classroom learning with practical projects and outdoor exploration.

After classes, you’ll help tidy the learning spaces and take part in a short debrief with the education team. This is a chance to share observations, discuss challenges and prepare for the next session. Your responsibilities will vary with the age group, planned activities and your growing confidence. Your day typically ends at 5:30 p.m.

    Evenings at RAREC

Evenings offer time to relax and get to know the team. Group activities may include volleyball, movie nights, dance classes, board games and night walks around RAREC.

    Exploring the region

Depending on your length of stay and the activities included in your booking, excursions may include dolphin watching, a visit to Belén Market and other local outings. Please check your placement information for the activities included.

On days off, our Volunteer Coordinator can explain additional tour options, costs and available support with arrangements.

    Getting around

On days off, you can visit Iquitos or arrange excursions in the surrounding region. Our Volunteer Coordinator can help explain transport and tour options. If you would like them to accompany you as a guide or translator, this can be arranged subject to availability; you will need to cover their transport, entrance fees and meals.

    Comida y bebida

    • Vegan: Options are limited, and you will need to bring additional protein sources and any specialty foods you require.

    • Kosher or halal: Please contact us to discuss your requirements. You may need to bring suitable foods; certified ingredients and preparation arrangements cannot be assumed.

    Food allergies and limitations

We cannot guarantee an allergen-free kitchen or prevent all traces of cross-contact. Some non-airborne nut allergies may be accommodated following discussion, but we cannot accommodate airborne nut allergies or severe allergies where trace exposure could cause a reaction.
