Sobre el programa

The Bukit Lawang Trust is a NGO based in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra. It's a rural area with the predominate industry being palm oil which threatens much of the natural environment. We are located on the edge of the protected Gunung Leseur National Park.

The trust building is a community and education centre and we provide free education to people of all ages from both the local community and surrounding areas.

Our English Language (ESL) programme provides free English lessons to people of all ages. As with all our programmes sustainable development and empowering local people is our core aim. We want to provide people with more options so that they can engage in further education, travel more easily and find work in more sustainable industries such as eco tourism.

Our ESL volunteers will help plan and teach all of our ESL lessons starting from our kindergarten classes up to our adult classes. The programme is run by our ESL Programme Co-Ordinator and overseen by our Education Manager and they will guide you through your whole journey. You will receive plenty of training and support throughout and you will never be asked to do something you don’t want to do. But, with that said, we will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Initially you’ll support our team in during classes but you will have plenty of opportunities, if you wish, to fully lead lessons yourself!

We teach lessons both at the Trust building but also in local schools and in more rural villages. You will experience a wide variety of teaching styles, group sizes and ability levels. We work from our own developed curriculum and ensure our learning is fun focused and engaging for our students and tailored to the specific groups needs.

As a volunteer you will live in the Trust building, along with most of our team, and you’ll be immersed into local life. We’re based in the heart of a dynamic and fun filled community. Outside of the classroom you will have the chance to work on various projects around the Trust, perhaps you are green fingered and would like work on our roof garden?  Perhaps you have a creative flare and want to help design a mural or create a arts project with the kids? The opportunities are endless!  When you are not working you can explore our breathtakingly beautiful area, you can relax at one of the many river spots, find some live music in Bukit Lawang, go trekking in the jungle or take a local craft workshop.  You’ll have no shortage of things to do in your free time!

Our typical working days starts around 08:00 when our kindergarten students arrive. We teach an ESL lesson to them on Monday mornings.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday we have exercise classes at the Trust in the morning (fitness, dancing or Yoga) and on Wednesdays we have our women’s group, we encourage all volunteers to participate in these if they want to.

Typically there is one ESL lesson every morning and one every afternoon, although it can sometimes vary. Outside of lesson times you will work with the ESL Programme Co-Ordinator and your fellow ESL volunteers lesson planning/preparing for future lessons, for example you may need to create resources, games or songs.

Lunch break is 12:00-14:00 every day (plenty of time to eat and nap).

Lessons resume at 14:00 but you’ll sometimes need to finish lunch at 13:30 allowing for travel time to some of the more rural areas we teach in. If not offsite your lesson be at the Trust building. Once your finished you will either work on lesson planning or focus on ‘project’ work.

Your work on the programme will take priority, but you’ll also have time to work on other ‘projects’ around the Trust. This could be anything from developing our roof garden, decorating the Trust building, community walk arounds, DIY jobs or anything else you can think of that would be of benefit! We welcome new ideas and creativity.

Our days finish at 17:00. Maybe you want to go for a swim in the river near by?  You can chill on our roof garden? Play cards with the team? Go into town and hangout?  It’s your free time and the choice is yours. We have a very social team though and a real family vibe at the Trust and so we often all hang out together and regularly there are optional evening activities arranged like team cooking night, karaoke party, writing group, things like that.

Your weekends are always free time apart from one weekend in the middle of the cycle where we have an ‘away team building weekend’, but this is super fun and usually a highlight.

Actividades de tiempo libre

The Bukit Lawang Trust is located in an exceptionally beautiful area, from our roof garden you can look out across at the jungle covered mountains of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Exploring the incredible nature the area has to offer is definitely worth prioritising in your free time. From jungle trekking to see the famous Sumatran Orangutan (you get a free two day trek included in the volunteer package), to visiting the gorgeous rivers, to finding waterfalls and hot springs, to going on snake tours, to exploring caves, you'll be spoilt for choice with what to do!

There are many rivers in the local area, the biggest, Bohorok River runs through the middle of Bukit Lawang and it's a popular spot to hang out, people often bring a picnic and drinks and relax and swim. But there are some smaller less visited hidden gems that we'll be happy to show you.

We have a very social team and a real family vibe at the Trust and so we often all hang out together and regularly there are optional evening activities arranged like team cooking night, karaoke party, writing group or arts and crafts nights. In Bukit Lawang there are multiple bars and guest houses too with extremely friendly locals and live music on most nights and we often go into town together.

We have a library at the Trust and volunteers are welcome to borrow books from there. The roof is a nice an peaceful place to do some reading.

We will also arrange optional weekend excursions for our volunteers like camping, canyoning, cave exploring and jungle treks.

Simply put, you will not be bored during your stay!

BUKIT LAWANG TRUST was founded after the devastating flood wiped out the village of Bukit Lawang.

In November 2003 in the late evening, the massive flood hit the village and killed many people. Described by witnesses as a tidal wave, the water was over 10 meters high, as it came crashing down the hills, wiping out everything in its path.

Founder and Trustee Rebecca Coley had been visiting the village a couple of months earlier and was contacted and asked to help. Rebecca set about raising funds and went back with her family to buy rice and distribute basic staple foods to feed the families who were living in the bus station, initially providing villagers with water carriers, purifying tablets, sleeping mats, rice and educational materials.

Since the charity was set up and registered in 2004, we set up a small temporary health clinic, renting and refurbishing a building, and employing locals to renovate and employing a doctor, nurse, and a midwife. The clinic was run from this small house for two years, seeing more than thirty patients a day, for free. At that time the health clinic offered free health care to any families affected by the flood.

Bukit Lawang Trust then partnered with Jersey Overseas Aid and they agreed to match fund the building of a community centre. Sixteen volunteers worked hard raising funds and came from Jersey to Indonesia to build the new community building with the locals in March 2007. The new community centre is now a permanent home for the Trust.

The administrator, doctor, nurse and mid-wife moved into the new clinic downstairs in the building in December 2007, and the clinic opened its doors in January 2008.

The Clinic served the community until December 2011 when the clinic closed due to the fact the area had positively rehabilitated, and the need for the clinic diminished. More clinics had opened in the area, and the decision was made for the centre to focus on Education, opening its doors as a dedicated Education Centre in January 2012.

Since that time the Education Centre has seen hundreds of children come through its doors for free english lessons and extra lessons such as arts and crafts, maths, computer lessons and traditional dance.

We run a free kindergarten every morning and have helped children to learn to read and write at all ages. We believe in education being the best route out of poverty and to the opportunity for a better life for the future.

The main ethos of the Trust is that education is the best route out of poverty and so we just offer the opportunity for young people to learn English and increase their knowledge of the world and the environment through our lessons.

Bukit Lawang Trust is also very focused on Conservation and wishes to empower and enable the local community to protect and look after the Gunung Leuseur National Park as it is right on their doorstep and the rare endangered Sumatran orangutans are under serious threat from the plans for further deforestation, new roads and more palm oil plantations. WE hope through education the locals will find alternative sources of income to palm oil and work together to protect the Gunung Leuser National Park.

Mission: To enhance the health and education of the community of the village of Bukit Lawang and the people of Bohorok region, North Sumatra, Indonesia. To engage in Environmental and wildlife projects  in connection with the endangered wildlife of the Gunung Leuseur ecosystem.

The ethos of the Trust is to empower people, so that the community is involved in every aspect of our projects.

The Bukit Lawang Trust Centre is a dedicated Education Centre offering free English lessons for young people and adults, a free mother and toddler learning group at the kindergarten, and a library. We run extra lessons in maths, science and arts and crafts and we have a strong emphasis on conservation education.

We opened the Richard Cann Reading Room in 2016 - a learning resource room dedicated to Conservation Education. Richard sadly lost his life in 2014 whilst visiting Bukit Lawang. This is his legacy and the Centre will be home to a space for learning and advancement in conservation for the community and visiting public and conservationists.

Bukit Lawang Trust also works with partners and like minded organizations to help bring them volunteers, do outreach, and support other groups as best we can.

We have two full time managers, a staff of about 8 local people, and at any one time can have up to almost ten volunteers. Our goals are to teach and educate people in the community and partner with other organizations to address conservation and environmental projects.

We are looking for people who share our passion for social projects, who wish to give back and help communities that are less fortunate. We want volunteers who love children, the environment, love new experiences, and building relationships with the local community!

We are a Non profit charitable organization run by volunteers and local staff. You should choose use because we invest in the community in the short term by hiring people and in the long term by providing education and more.
