The Project

Volunteer in Peru with Globalteer to be part of an inspirational and holistic after-school project for 80 children in a mountain village near Cusco. The project gives free classes and homework help to under-privileged children. The project is also a safe place to play, to learn traditional music and dance. The children are provided free fruit, clean drinking water and a nutritious lunch. Join us at Picaflor House Community Project and make a difference!

Picaflor House Community Project was founded by Globalteer in 2010. After setting up an after school programme in Cambodia, we recognized the need for a similar programme in the region of Cusco where we saw vulnerable children wandering the streets after state school classes had finished.

We visited a number of communities in order to identify where the need and the potential for impact was greatest. The project was opened in the village of Oropesa in November 2010.

Many of the villagers the project works with have moved from remote mountain areas to the village in search of work and a better future for their children. Their level of formal education is often low and it is not uncommon for them to have left education after primary school. This can lead to low incomes, a risky reliance on subsistence farming and poor awareness of basic health and hygiene regimes, resulting in poor health. In addition, for many of the parents in the village, Spanish is their second language after Quechua. This therefore makes it difficult for them to help and support their children with their school work.

Picaflor House has worked closely with the community to address both the problems and their causes and is really making a difference.

How Picaflor House is helping

For the first year the project worked out of the local school in Oropesa, and taught classes three times per week in English, Art, and Mathematics.

Picaflor House now has its own site with classrooms, art room, kitchen, playground and garden and is attended by up to 80 children every day. Activities include an academic programme supporting the state school curriculum. Also a non-academic programme including chess, sports, photography, and traditional music and dance. A healthy lunch programme has been added for children most in need.

Volunteer in Peru with this project and you can be part of these amazing programmes supporting the kids in Cusco.

Why the project need volunteers

Picaflor House receives no state funding. Only through volunteer support, private donations and grants the project continues working with the children of Oropesa and their families, setting them up for a bright future.

Project Location: The UNESCO world heritage-listed city of Cusco in Peru’s breath-taking Andes Mountains. The city is home to countless museums, restaurants, Inca ruins and fabulous Spanish colonial architecture.

Main Volunteer Activities: Volunteers work with our foreign and local Peruvian staff assisting with English, arts & crafts, and computing classes. Also helping out with sports & games and in the kindergarten.

Hours: Volunteers work from Mon to Fri, afternoons only, with mornings free for sightseeing or Spanish classes. Weekends are free for relaxing or travelling through this beautiful and diverse country.

Volunteers make a huge difference at this project where you work with the permanent project staff helping with a variety of activities to suit your skills and experience. Volunteer in Peru with Globalteer to bring much needed extra pairs of hands and introduce new enthusiasm, energy and ideas into every day of your stay.

Día típico

Volunteers work from 1pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday with all weekends off. This gives you plenty of time to relax, take in some sightseeing or attend Spanish classes in the mornings. You can then take the bus to the project which is about 45 minutes from the centre of Cusco in time to help out with lunch. You don't need to speak Spanish to be an effective volunteer at any of our Peru projects. Many volunteers like to take advantage of being in a Spanish-speaking country to learn Spanish or to brush up on those rusty language skills.

All our volunteers in Cusco have the option of taking Spanish classes. Classes are tailor-made to suit each volunteer's level of Spanish so it doesn't matter if you are a complete beginner or just need to brush up a bit.

Tasks when you Volunteer in Peru

There is always a range of tasks to be carried out by volunteers and you will work with our local staff on some or all of the following:

  • Assisting local staff preparing for classes
  • Assisting teachers in English classes
  • Helping out with arts & crafts, games and sports
  • Assisting children with their school homework
  • Assisting our local teachers with maths, reading and communication classes
  • Helping to supervise children on local excursions and outings
  • Assisting in cleaning classrooms and playgrounds
  • Assisting with general maintenance around the project

Actividades de tiempo libre

Whether you plan your entire trip in advance or decide to wait until you get to Peru, our team in Cusco are all very well travelled and can offer advice and help in planning the perfect itinerary for your weekends or for travel before or after your placement. Here are just a few of Peru’s treasures to whet your appetite.

Cusco

Cusco is a beautiful city that has something to offer everyone from Inca ruins and splendid Spanish colonial architecture to elegant squares and outstanding mountain scenery. The historic city centre is a lively hub of cafes, restaurants and bars with dozens of boutiques and markets. Many shops offer an astonishing range of unique locally made goods to take home as a souvenir of your trip to Peru. There are museums, galleries, churches and monasteries to visit and every Sunday sees a magnificent civil parade in the City’s stunning main square, the Plaza de Armas.

Cusco’s Indian and Catholic traditions are frequently celebrated with street parades, live music and food stallsspringing up across the city at any excuse. There are also some wonderful walks and hikes in and around the city centre. You can stroll amongst whitewashed houses and along the cobbled lanes in the Bohemian quarter of San Blas. Maybe climb high above the city to the Inca fortress at Sacsayhuaman and take in the unrivalled views of the city and the surrounding Andes.

Machu Picchu

Surely the number one reason that many visitors come to Peru is to visit the incomparable wonder of Machu Picchu. Whatever you read and no  matter how many photos you have seen, nothing can quite prepare you for the first time you see the Inca citadel rising high above a bend in the river.

Machu Picchu is easily accessible from Cusco. You can go there by luxury train, trek the amazing Inca Trail high in the Andes or take any other number of routes all ending with lost city itself. Built, but never completed by the Incas around 1450 the Inca capital was only re-discovered in 1911. The breath-taking lost city of the Incas is now discovered by hundreds of enthralled visitors every day.

The Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a must-see on anyone’s Peru itinerary. Barely half an hour’s drive from Cusco and you will find a magical, steep-sided valley where fresh mountain rivers and streams tumble between ancient mountains and majestic glaciers.

The Sacred Valley’s centuries-old towns and villages are home to remarkably preserved Inca forts and citadels. Markets with traditional textiles and souvenirs draw visitors to lovely towns like Pisac, Chinchero and Ollantaytambo. The amazing salt terraces and pre-Inca agricultural terraces at Maras are also an easy day trip from Cusco.

Who We Are

Globalteer’s vision is a world where human and animal suffering are minimised and the future of our planet is safeguarded by effectively harnessing the goodwill of people who share our vision. We work to achieve our vision and charitable objectives through volunteer placements and support for community, conservation, and animal welfare projects and programmes. We are a 100% not-for-profit, registered charity, operating in South East Asia and Latin America.

Our charitable objectives entail:

  • Promoting sustainable development for the benefit of the public by the relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially disadvantaged communities.
  • Promoting humane behaviour towards animals by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for animals which are in need of attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage.

We are made up of a small team of permanent staff, with offices located in Peru and Cambodia. Our volunteers and donors come to us from all over the world.

What We Do

By placing volunteers into our programmes and partner projects, we aim to truly make an impact in responsible, sustainable ways. Our strategies include:

  • To work with projects that meet genuine local needs, as identified by the communities they serve, and that meet our criteria for sustainability and responsibility.
  • To work closely with our partner projects to ensure that all volunteer placements are of genuine value to the project and are in keeping with the projects’ short-term goals and long-term objectives.
  • To place suitably experienced volunteers within approved partner projects on tasks where there is a local shortage of necessary skills.
  • To encourage the transfer of volunteer skills to local staff wherever possible.
  • To help fund the continued development of partner projects through volunteer donations and post-placement volunteer fundraising.
  • To help all our partner projects to become fully self-funded and locally managed with minimal requirement for external support.
  • To continually assess the needs of the communities with whom we work and identify new partners and new initiatives as necessary.

As part of our commitment to responsible volunteering, we are not only concerned with the needs of our projects - we also care about our volunteers. From the moment we confirm a volunteer placement, we work to make sure each volunteer is prepared and feels comfortable before they travel to a new country. We give comprehensive, tailored travel and health advice, send packing lists, and make sure all volunteers understand their roles at the projects. We also communicate regularly by email or Skype before each volunteer sets off, so that they know exactly what to expect when they arrive. We believe the better prepared a volunteer is, the more of an impact he or she can make at each project.

Furthermore, we are one of the pioneers of responsible volunteering. We have introduced detailed and robust child protection policies into many overseas projects and are one of the few volunteer organisations that insist on background checks for all staff and volunteers working with children.

As a registered charity in the UK, we are 100% not-for-profit – we must use all monies received to promote our charitable objectives. So the more money we raise, the more we can invest in helping the projects with which we work.

Where We Work

Globalteer works with 22 different community and animal welfare projects in 9 countries within South East Asia and Latin America – Argentina, Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Peru, and Thailand. We partner with 3 separate elephant sanctuaries, 7 wildlife rescue and animal welfare projects, 4 conservation programmes, and 8 community and teaching programmes, 2 of which are run solely by Globalteer.
