    Sobre el programa

Step away from the typical tourist trails of Chitwan and immerse yourself in a meaningful journey of compassion and community support. In the vibrant village of Sauraha, horses are more than just animals; they are vital companions to the local families who rely on them for their livelihoods. This unique program invites you to live and work alongside a humble family, providing hands-on support to improve the living conditions and health of their horses while experiencing the authentic rhythm of life in the Terai lowlands.

Your days will be filled with purpose as you assist in the daily care of the horses, from grooming and feeding to ensuring they have access to clean water and nutrition. Beyond animal husbandry, volunteers play a crucial role in physical infrastructure projects, such as repairing or building eco-friendly stables to protect the animals from the intense tropical sun and seasonal monsoons. By sharing your time and energy, you help alleviate the heavy daily workload of the host family, allowing them to focus on long-term sustainability and growth.

This is a true cultural exchange where you will stay in a traditional homestay, sharing meals and stories with your hosts. You will learn about the resilient Tharu culture, participate in organic fodder collection, and perhaps assist the family in their vegetable gardens. Every task you perform contributes to a regenerative model of tourism that prioritizes animal welfare and economic empowerment for those who need it most.

Whether you are walking the horses to the Rapti River for a sunset bath or helping the family’s children with their English studies, your presence creates a lasting "Good Karma" impact. This program is perfect for animal lovers and soulful travelers who want to make a tangible difference in the lives of a hardworking family and their equine partners. Join us in Sauraha to build a brighter, more stable future for the heart of the village.

The morning begins at 07:00 AM with stable cleaning and feeding the animals alongside the family. This is followed by a traditional Nepali breakfast of Dal Bhat with the hosts at 09:00 AM. From 10:30 AM, we shift our focus to physical project work, which includes tasks such as fencing, stable repairs, or grooming the horses.

During the peak midday heat, we break for lunch and rest at 01:00 PM. In the afternoon at 03:00 PM, the schedule alternates between collecting fodder from the fields and conducting community English lessons. We conclude the day’s activities at 05:00 PM with an evening walk to the Rapti River, where the horses can bathe.

    Actividades de tiempo libre

Sauraha is the vibrant heart of Chitwan, offering a perfect balance of tranquil nature and cultural energy. When you are not assisting at the horse farm, you are perfectly positioned to explore one of Asia’s most famous wildlife destinations and the unique traditions of the Terai lowlands.Wild Encounters in Chitwan National Park

Just a short walk from the village lies the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Chitwan National Park. Free time is often spent on jungle safaris, whether by jeep or on foot with experienced naturalists. You can track the elusive Bengal tiger, observe the greater one-horned rhinoceros in its natural habitat, and spot sloth bears, wild elephants, and various species of deer. For bird enthusiasts, the park is a paradise with over 500 species to discover.

    River Life & Sunset Views

The Rapti River serves as the lifeblood of the community. In the late afternoons, it is a popular tradition to sit at one of the riverside "sunset points." You can enjoy a refreshing drink while watching the sky turn vibrant shades of orange and purple as elephants come down to the water. For a quieter experience, take a traditional dugout canoe ride along the river. This peaceful journey allows you to drift past basking crocodiles (Gharials and Muggers) and vibrant kingfishers.

    Cultural Immersion & Tharu Heritage

To understand the land, you must understand its people. You can rent a bicycle and ride through the emerald-green mustard and rice fields to visit traditional Tharu villages. The Tharu people have lived in harmony with this jungle for centuries, and their mud-walled houses with beautiful lattice work are a sight to see. In the evenings, don't miss the Tharu Cultural Program, where you can witness the famous "Stick Dance"—a rhythmic and energetic display of heritage and communal strength.

    Community & Relaxation

Sauraha itself is a friendly, walkable town with a variety of small cafes, bakeries, and handicraft shops. It is a great place to meet other international travelers and share stories of your volunteer work. If you are looking for a moment of quiet, you can visit the local Elephant Breeding Center or simply find a hammock at your homestay to catch up on reading or journaling.

    Sustainable Exploration

For the more adventurous, a day trip to the Bis Hazari Tal (20,000 Lakes) provides a stunning backdrop for photography and a deeper look at the wetlands' ecosystem. Whether you are seeking the adrenaline of a jungle trek or the peace of a rural sunset, Sauraha provides an incredible backdrop for your free time, ensuring your journey in Nepal is as restorative for you as it is impactful for the family you are supporting.

To align with your Good Karma philosophy of transparency and "giving back," this fee breakdown ensures that volunteers understand exactly how their contribution supports the local family, the horses, and the sustainability of the project.Investment in Impact: Fee Breakdown

At Good Karma Trekking, we believe in a transparent financial model. Your program fee is not just a payment for services; it is a direct investment in the livelihood of a poor family in Sauraha and the welfare of their animals.

Below is the breakdown of where your contribution goes:

    1. Direct Family & Equine Support (25%)

The largest portion of your fee goes directly to the host family. This covers:

    • Host Family Stipend: Provides a fair and sustainable income for the family, often significantly higher than what they could earn through traditional labor.

    • Equine Nutrition & Medical Fund: A dedicated portion is set aside to purchase high-quality fodder, vitamins, and emergency veterinary care for the horses.

    • Stable Maintenance: Funding for materials (wood, tin, or bamboo) to improve and repair the horse shelters.

    2. Accommodation & Local Meals (25%)

This ensures your comfort and health during your stay in the Terai:

    • Homestay Costs: Rent and utilities for your room within the family compound.

    • Traditional Meals: Three fresh, locally sourced Nepali meals per day (typically Dal Bhat, seasonal vegetables, and local snacks).

    • Drinking Water: Access to safe, filtered water throughout your stay.

    3. Program Coordination & Support (25%)

To ensure the program remains safe, organized, and impactful:

    • 24/7 Local Support: Access to our field coordinators in Sauraha and our main office in Kathmandu for any assistance.

    • Airport Transfers & Orientation: Ground transportation upon arrival and the comprehensive cultural/safety briefing.

    • Project Monitoring: Regular visits by our team to ensure the horses are being treated humanely and the family’s needs are being met.

    4. Good Karma Foundation Contribution (25%)

A percentage of every fee is funneled into the Good Karma Foundation. This fund supports broader community initiatives in the Sauraha and Lamjung regions, such as:

    • Local school supply donations.

    • Community-wide animal health camps.

    • Regenerative agriculture workshops for neighboring families.

    What is NOT Included:
    • International Airfare: Flights to and from Kathmandu.

    • Visa Fees: Nepal entry visa (available at the airport).

    • Personal Expenses: Snacks, souvenirs, and laundry.

    • Optional Activities: Jungle safaris, jeep tours, or canoe rides during your free time.

    • Travel Insurance: Mandatory for all volunteers.

    Why We Charge a Fee

As a social enterprise, we do not receive government funding. Your fees allow us to keep the program running ethically without placing a financial burden on the poor families we aim to help. By joining us, you are shifting from a "tourist" to a "partner" in rural development.

Once you are refreshed and briefed, we coordinate your transport to the project site in Sauraha. Depending on your preference and schedule, we arrange:

    • Internal Flight (Optional Upgrade): A 20-minute flight to Bharatpur for those looking to maximize their time at the project.
