    Sobre el programa

Live in Siem Reap, a Cambodian city about five hours from the capital of Phnom Penh, perfecting your teaching skills while contributing directly to educational developments in the region as well as United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. Improving the educational opportunities of students in Cambodia allows them to access future job opportunities, furthering the progress of UN SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

You might also conduct workshops in the local community centred around topics like preventative healthcare or gender equality, depending on the requests of the local community members and our partners, assisting with UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and Goal 5: Gender Equality.

In the city of Siem Reap, we have joined efforts with local partner organisations to assess the needs within the community before setting up any of our projects. As such the core of our programs are aimed at sustainably enhancing the educational facilities and English literacy levels of the community of Siem Reap. Through working with such a diverse range of students, participants will gain an insight into the educational system in Cambodia, and GVI’s work with the community to increase access to quality education. You will gain in-depth training in teaching and how to lead classes and activities.

    • Receive professional training in teaching, including setting project objectives, best practices, and how to plan and evaluate project goals.
    • Gain experience teaching English as a foreign language to children, young adults, monks or older adults. Classes can be structured or informal.
    • Take on additional responsibilities such as working closely with our partners to assist with improving the skills of teachers.
    • Learn how to plan and set team goals, create supportive team environments, and reflect on your own leadership style.
    • Take on additional responsibilities such as conducting community needs analysis, creating pre-and-post workshop surveys, and coordinating workshops.
    • Work on an individual project or one of GVI’s existing projects. This could include research into gender equality or local English literacy rates.
    • Meet weekly in a small group with other interns and an experienced mentor to receive project guidance and feedback on your leadership.

    Día típico

Please note that this is just a sample schedule and your daily tasks will be influenced by the needs of the project and the activities happening during your program.

6:00 AM Get ready for the day: Wake up and prepare for the day ahead. If there's time, you can take a quick swim in the pool before breakfast for a refreshing start to the day.

7:00 AM Breakfast: Enjoy either a Khmer or Western-style breakfast with the team.

8:00 AM Project work with local partner organisation/s: Morning projects currently include English teaching to monks and involvement in schools supporting the teaching of English.

12:00 PM Lunch: Lunch is enjoyed as a group. We either eat out at a local restaurant or at the excellent restaurant at the guesthouse where you'll be staying. Communal lunches provide an excellent opportunity to reflect on the morning's work and share experiences with fellow participants.

1:00 PM Program planning and development time: During the heat of the middle of the day we plan the evening project sessions or the next day's sessions. You might also assist with shopping for project resources. This is also a great time to work on your personal project.

4:00 PM Project work with local partner organisation/s: Current evening sessions involve returning to the pagoda to support the monks in the teaching of English in their community school, visiting a local village to run an after-school club for marginalized children, or supporting the work of a local women's empowerment organisation.

6:00 PM Dinner: We eat together as a group in one of the many fine local restaurants.

7:00 PM Free time: Time to relax or get involved in social activities. Make use of the common areas to spend time with your new friends, play a game or do some studying. In addition, there are many evening attractions in Siem Reap that you can enjoy. The city comes alive after dark, offering various opportunities to experience the culture of Cambodia.

9:00 PM Bedtime: Due to the early morning start, most participants head off to bed to get a restful night’s sleep.

By joining a GVI program, you not only have the opportunity to work in collaboration with local communities, you also get the chance to explore the surrounding area or venture further to see what else the region has to offer on weekends.

Our field staff are a great source of advice on local travel options. Many participants choose to travel before or after their experience, solidifying friendships made on the program.

Engaging with a new context teaches global awareness, adaptability and critical thinking – skills highly valued in today’s world. Cultural immersion is encouraged, and there are many activities to enjoy during your free time or before and after your program. Please note, these suggestions aren’t included in the program fee and are at your own expense.

    • Cambodia has a thriving tourist souvenir industry that produces many locally handmade items such as a traditional scarf called a Krama, ceramic, lacquer, and wood carved crafts, and beautifully decorated bottles of flavoured rice wine.
    • The national dish of Cambodia is Amok, which is a combination of fresh river fish, coconut cream, ginger, turmeric and lemongrass, steamed in banana leaves and served with a side of rice. A large part of Cambodian cuisine features fish and seafood, along with the staple grain of rice, though they also offer many meat and vegetarian dishes. K’tieu (Kuytheav) is a noodle soup generally served for breakfast, usually made with pork, beef, or seafood. Cambodian desserts are delicious and widely available from stalls in most Khmer towns.
    • The Angkor Festival which takes place in Siem Reap is one of Cambodia’s most popular annual events, often attended by the King of Cambodia himself. The festival draws performers from all over Asia who recreate epic tales from ancient Khmer mythology using colourful costumes and vibrant music. Other festivals that take place throughout the year include the Khmer New Year in mid-April, Pchum Ben in mid-September, and the Water Festival in November.
