    À propos du programme

A short trip that still does something useful

Not everyone has three months. This programme is built for people with one or two weeks – students on a summer break, families travelling together, backpackers already heading through Asia – who want their time in Nepal to amount to more than a checklist of temples. You work on a real project in Kathmandu, and you see the country properly. Both halves are organised for you.

    What you actually do

On the one-week option you join a practical refurbishment project at a local school: repainting tired classrooms, adding alphabets, numbers and murals to the walls, and generally making the space somewhere children want to be. Materials are supplied. You work as a team with the other volunteers on your start date, so the room you finish on Friday looks nothing like the one you walked into on Tuesday.

On the two-week option you are placed in a kindergarten or teaching project instead, assisting Nepali staff with lessons, activities and the daily running of the centre. Some volunteers also organise a small fundraiser for classroom supplies while they are there. Either way you are working alongside the in-country team, not in place of them.

    And the rest of Nepal

Sightseeing is built into the schedule rather than left to you. Guided tours cover Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath – and on the two-week trip you head to Pokhara for a weekend, with a deluxe coach transfer, a hotel, a boat ride on Phewa Lake and a pre-dawn climb to Sarangkot for sunrise over the Annapurnas.

    Where you stay

The volunteer house is in Bafal, a quiet residential pocket about ten minutes from Thamel. Breakfast and dinner are cooked in-house – dal bhat, curries, plenty of it – and there is fast Wi-Fi, hot water in winter and western-style bathrooms. A Kathmandu-based coordinator runs the house and is your first point of contact throughout.

Minimum age 17. A clean criminal background check is required.

    Two-week itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival and transfer to the volunteer house. Airport pickups run between 6:00am and 10:30pm.

Day 2 – Orientation covering the placement, the neighbourhood, transport and safety, followed by a half-day city tour: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and the Temple of Kumari.

Days 3–6 – Volunteering at your kindergarten or teaching placement, roughly 10am to 3pm. Second half of the city tour on Thursday afternoon (Pashupatinath and Boudhanath).

Days 7–9 – Pokhara. Deluxe coach to Pokhara, hotel accommodation, a boat ride on Phewa Lake, sunrise from Sarangkot, and a local tour taking in Davis Falls, Gupteshwar Mahadev cave and Bindhyabasini Temple.

Days 10–14 – Back in Kathmandu to finish at your placement, with the final weekend free before departure.

Volunteers work around five to six hours a day, five days a week. Exact hours vary by placement.

    Activités de loisirs

You volunteer roughly five to six hours a day, Monday to Friday, which leaves your evenings and every weekend free. Exact hours vary a little by placement.

    Evenings in Kathmandu

Most volunteers end up in Thamel, the backpacker quarter about ten minutes from the volunteer house – a dense grid of cafes, rooftop restaurants, live-music bars, bookshops and gear stores where you can pick up trekking kit for a fraction of what it costs at home. Closer to home there is the Garden of Dreams, a restored Edwardian walled garden that is the quietest spot in central Kathmandu. Sunset aarti at the ghats of Pashupatinath, on the Bagmati river, is worth going out of your way for at least once. Cooking sessions in the volunteer house kitchen – momos, dal bhat – tend to happen spontaneously.

    Weekend trips

Pokhara is the classic one, and it is built into the two-week itinerary: a lakeside town under the Annapurnas, with boating on Phewa Lake, paragliding off Sarangkot, Davis Falls and the World Peace Pagoda. Chitwan National Park in the lowlands is the other big weekend – jeep and canoe safaris with a real chance of one-horned rhino, and elephants, deer and crocodile along the river. Nagarkot, only a couple of hours away, is where people go for a Himalayan sunrise without committing to a trek, and the ridge walk down to Dhulikhel is an easy day on foot.

    Closer in

The Kathmandu Valley alone holds seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. Beyond the ones covered on your guided tours, Bhaktapur and Patan are the two medieval cities most people wish they had given more time to – Patan's Durbar Square and its museum are a half-day, Bhaktapur's pottery square and Newari architecture a full one. Boudhanath is best at dusk, when the Tibetan community walks the stupa.

    Also on offer

Yoga and meditation classes are easy to find in Thamel and Boudha, short trekking permits can be arranged locally, and rafting on the Trishuli is a popular single-day add-on. Your in-country coordinator can book weekend tours for you, or you can arrange them yourself once you are there – add-on tours can also be booked in advance through your online account.

Transfert de l'aéroport Tribhuvan International Airport

Airport pickup from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is included. A member of the local coordinating team will meet you in the arrivals hall and take you to the volunteer house in Bafal. Pickups are scheduled between 6:00am and 10:30pm, so try to land inside that window.

If you are already in Nepal, or arriving overland from India or Tibet, you will be met at a point agreed with the team beforehand instead.

The return trip to the airport is not included in the programme fee, but the local team can arrange a taxi for you at a small cost – just let them know your flight time a day or two ahead.

    Logement

You stay at the volunteer house in Bafal, a quiet residential neighbourhood roughly ten minutes' drive from Thamel – far enough to sleep, close enough to walk into the centre of things in the evening.

Rooms are shared with other volunteers, which for most people turns out to be half the point: you arrive on your own and leave with a group. The house has running water, hot showers through the winter, electricity, clean western-style toilets, high-speed Wi-Fi and a television in the common area.

A Kathmandu-based coordinator manages the house and lives locally, so there is always someone to ask about transport, a placement question or a weekend plan. If you would rather have your own room, a private room can be arranged at a nearby guest house for an additional charge – just ask when you apply.

On the two-week option, the three nights in Pokhara are spent in hotel accommodation arranged for you.

    Aliments & Boissons

Two Nepali meals a day – breakfast and dinner – are cooked at the volunteer house and included in your fee. Breakfast is usually bread, butter, jam, eggs or a sandwich with tea. Dinner is generally dal bhat, the staple of the Nepali table: lentil soup, rice and a vegetable curry, often with chicken or another meat alongside.

Lunch is your own, and it is cheap – a plate of momos or thukpa from a local place near your placement costs very little. On the two-week trip, breakfast is provided during the Pokhara weekend; lunch and dinner there are not included.

Vegetarians are easy to look after, and Nepali cooking is well suited to it. Tell us any dietary requirement on your application form and mention it again to the local team when you arrive, and the kitchen will work around it. Bottled or filtered water is recommended and is inexpensive to buy locally.

Airport: Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (KTM). Fly in on your programme start date; a member of the local team will meet you and take you to the volunteer house. Pickups are scheduled between 6:00am and 10:30pm. If you are already in Nepal or arriving overland, you will be met at a point agreed in advance.

Visa: most nationalities get a tourist visa on arrival at KTM – USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days. You need a passport valid for six months with a blank page, and in some cases a passport photo. A handful of nationalities are not eligible for visa on arrival and must apply at a Nepalese embassy beforehand, so check before you book flights.

Airport drop-off at the end of your programme is not included, but can be arranged locally for a small charge.

Spending money: budget roughly USD 80–100 a week for lunches, snacks, bottled water, local transport and shopping. There are ATMs throughout Kathmandu and exchange counters at the airport.
