À propos du programme

Chronic underdevelopment in Uganda is complex. Remote rural living, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a subsistence economy, and limited local services can leave families dependent on hand-outs, with higher rates of malnutrition and fewer education options. In many villages, there are limited ways to raise funds beyond subsistence living. That is why The Real Uganda builds long-term relationships with local communities to support sustainable solutions through start-up funds, shared knowledge, and steady motivation.

About the Program

Do you enjoy being outdoors and doing real, practical work? Want to see how climate change affects farming in the tropics? This program places you with Ugandan women's farming collectives, where your time and effort support food security and environmental sustainability.

What you will do

You will work side-by-side with Ugandan women farmers in collective gardens that promote:

  • better nutrition

  • efficient land use

  • natural pest control

  • soil conservation

  • income generation

Tasks depend on the season. You may help prepare soil, plant, weed, manage pests, or harvest crops. You will receive basic training and the tools you need when you arrive. If you have them, bring work gloves, a hat, and rubber boots. Expect to work in the sun.

Where you will live

You will stay in a private room in the family home of the host organization’s director, with meals included. Electricity can be intermittent, and there is no running water or indoor plumbing. The farms are a motorcycle ride away.

School connection and community time

Dive deeper into the women's communities. After gardening, you can share info about environmental conservation or farming practices and learn local handicrafts. You can also spend time in the local school with their kids. Academics, sports, arts and crafts, and cultural exchange activities are welcome!

Activities

Volunteer activities may include a mix of these seasonal tasks:

  • clearing land and preparing soil

  • planting maize, beans, fruit trees, and vegetables

  • weeding gardens

  • pest management

  • harvesting crops

You will be guided by local staff, and you will learn by doing every day.

Journée typique

By living and working alongside international volunteers, local people can build skills, access education, and learn practical ways to earn income. Over time, this can reduce dependence on outside help. Volunteers work with local staff, support ongoing programs, and share ideas through real cultural exchange.

Your time and care can make a difference in everyday ways. For adults, it can build confidence and motivation. For children, it can create a safe space to have fun, try new things, and express themselves through sport and art.

We have learned that impact often comes from how you show up, not just what you teach. Come ready to encourage people, listen well, and bring warmth, patience, and creativity to everyone you meet.

We encourage you to see as much of the country as you can when your schedule allows. We can help you plan tourist activities before you arrive or once you are here.

The Real Uganda also encourages volunteers to visit each other at their placements. You learn more when you see different community projects and how local teams lead their work. We share volunteer contact details so you can connect before and after arrival.

Services sur place

Besides the Volunteer World commission, our fees cover:

  • online support from me, while you prepare for Uganda
  • pickup at Entebbe International Airport
  • first night hotel stay
  • in-country orientation, again - with me
  • transportation to your placement
  • three meals of Ugandan food each day
  • secure accommodation
  • weekend volunteer guesthouse use
  • 24-hour supervision, and
  • a donation to the organization with which you are placed.

Program fees do not include airline tickets, travel insurance, a tourist visa, vaccinations, drinking water, leisure travel, or medical services. We can help you plan and arrange these items.

Your program fee covers the basic expenses listed above. It also helps support our Ugandan partner organizations so they can keep running their work in their communities. It helps The Real Uganda:

  • monitor partner progress and program quality

  • support and guide current volunteers while they are here

  • recruit new volunteers who are a good fit for Uganda and for each placement

Because of this, we can keep partnering with strong local development programs and make sure volunteers are supported throughout their stay, so your time in Uganda has real value for you and for the community.

Transfert de l'aéroport Entebbe International Airport

Volunteers should arrive around the 1st or the 15th of the month you start volunteering. You will fly into Entebbe International Airport.

We can handle all arrival times and flights. Our driver will meet you and bring you to our headquarters in Mukono Town for orientation and placement support.

About one week before you travel, you will receive an email with clear details about your arrival, pick-up, and your first few days in Uganda.

Logement

Volunteers stay in a private, lockable room, often in the home of your host organization’s director. Rooms are sometimes shared with another international volunteer.

Most homes have electricity, but no running water or western-style toilet. Expect outdoor facilities. Power and water outages do happen, so it helps to be flexible.

After you confirm your placement, we share full details about your location and accommodation.

Bed linens and a mosquito net are provided. Please bring your own pillow, since pillows are not commonly used in Uganda.

Aliments & Boissons

Volunteers receive three meals a day, made with local Ugandan food. Common meals include matooke (steamed banana), posho (maize meal), potatoes, rice, and seasonal vegetables. These are usually served with peas, beans, or groundnut sauce, and sometimes beef or fish. Breakfast is often tea with bread.

Vegetarians and vegans are welcome. Dairy is uncommon in many areas. If you want extra variety, you can easily add fresh fruit and vegetables from local markets.
