    À propos du programme

The Horse Care and Stable Management Project is a social initiative designed to provide a structured environment where individuals can engage with horses and learn about stable management. The program offers therapeutic benefits through animal-assisted activities while simultaneously teaching essential skills in horse care, stable upkeep, and responsible equine facility management. It integrates these activities into a broader framework of community development, fostering responsibility, work ethics, and empathy.

Volunteers help with daily chores around the stables and care for the horses, which directly benefits the well-being of the animals and frees up time for our team to focus on training. The program is overseen by our permanently employed stable managers and the Swanepoel family.

    Program Objectives and Impact

    1. Animal Care Education: Volunteers learn fundamentals of horse care, including feeding, grooming, and health monitoring.

    2. Stable Management Skills: Practical experience in mucking out, organizing tack, and maintaining stables and surrounding areas.

    3. Personal Development: Enhances emotional intelligence, resilience, teamwork, and responsibility.

    4. Community Engagement: Fosters a sense of community through collaborative work and shared goals.

    5. Physical and Mental Well-being: Offers therapeutic benefits, helping with stress relief, emotional support, and physical fitness.

    Program Structure
The project operates daily, with structured schedules including horse care, stable chores, and training. Volunteers will work in the farm’s eight stables and surrounding paddocks, engaging with both young and experienced horses. Horses are trained on the ground as well as under saddle, including riding on the bit and adapting to different riders’ styles. Horses may be prepared for farm use, safaris, or the Namibian jumping and dressage industry.

    Locations
The program is offered at two farm locations:

    1. Hochfeld Farm – Traditional farm environment, ideal for immersive horse and cattle work.

    2. Losberg Farm, near the airport – Conveniently located one hour from Windhoek, allowing easy access for volunteers.

Volunteers have the option to stay at one farm or visit both during their program, gaining experience in different settings while expanding skills and exposure to Namibian farm life. Accommodation is in double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, providing comfort while remaining close to the stables and daily activities.

    Long-term Benefits and Social Impact

    • Employment Opportunities: Skills gained can lead to careers in animal care, stable management, or equine therapy. Partnerships with local farms, riding schools, and veterinary practices support job placements or apprenticeships.

    • Empathy and Emotional Growth: Volunteers cultivate compassion, responsibility, and self-confidence through interaction with horses.

    • Mental and Physical Health: Stable chores and horse care promote physical activity, reduce stress, and provide emotional support.

    • Community Integration: Collaborative work encourages teamwork, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills.

    • Animal Welfare Advocacy: Volunteers learn to educate others on proper horse care and ethical treatment of animals.

    Expectations for Volunteers
Volunteers are expected to be willing to learn, respect horses, the farm environment, our family, and employees.

    What Volunteers Can Expect
A friendly, warm welcome, a wonderful stay in a beautiful Namibian setting, meaningful experiences, and an opportunity to immerse in authentic farm life.

    What to Bring
No special equipment is required. Volunteers should bring:

    • Safe shoes suitable for working around horses and outdoors (sneakers, hiking shoes, or safety boots)

    • Sunscreen and a hat for sun protection

This program offers a supportive, hands-on, and rewarding environment, helping volunteers develop skills, contribute to horse welfare, and experience Namibian rural life across one or both farm locations.

    • Exercise Routines: Horses are led to paddocks or riding arenas for exercise. Volunteers learn to monitor stamina, observe behavior, and ensure safe handling.

    • Therapeutic Interaction: Guided activities encourage emotional bonding with the horses. Walking with, leading, or spending quiet time with the horses provides therapeutic benefits.

    • Team Activities: Volunteers collaborate on group tasks, such as leading multiple horses, assisting each other with chores, and completing collective stable management projects.

Late Afternoon – Evening Horse Care and Stable Preparation (5:00 PM – 6:30 PM)

    • Feeding and Settling Horses: Volunteers help prepare and serve evening feed. They ensure all horses are comfortable, stables are clean, and water and bedding are replenished for the night.

    • Final Checks: Volunteers inspect horses for any signs of stress, injury, or health concerns and assist in organizing tack and equipment for the following day.

This schedule provides a structured, hands-on learning experience combining horse care, stable management, teamwork, and therapeutic interaction, giving volunteers a comprehensive understanding of horse welfare and practical farm life.

Transfert de l'aéroport Hosea Kutako International Airport

We provide personal airport pickup for all confirmed volunteers. Upon arrival in Namibia, you will be collected directly from the airport by a member of our team. This ensures a safe, reliable, and stress-free transfer to the farm.

Flight details must be shared with us in advance so that we can schedule your pickup accordingly. We monitor arrival times to accommodate possible delays and ensure smooth coordination.

The drive to the farm offers your first glimpse of Namibia’s open landscapes and rural surroundings. Depending on which farm you are staying at first (Hochfeld or Losberg), travel time may vary. Both locations are easily accessible by road.

Because we arrange pickup ourselves, there is no need to organize taxis or buses. This allows volunteers to feel secure and welcomed from the moment they land.

Return transfers to the airport at the end of your stay can also be arranged in coordination with your departure flight time.

    Logement

Volunteers stay in comfortable double rooms, each furnished with two three-quarter beds and a private ensuite bathroom. The rooms are designed to offer both comfort and practicality after active days on the farm.

The volunteer villa is located on the same premises as the main house, approximately 100 metres away. This allows volunteers to enjoy a sense of independence and privacy while still being close enough for easy communication and support when needed.

The area is safe, peaceful, and surrounded by open farm landscapes. Accommodation is clean, well-maintained, and suited to rural living, providing a relaxed environment where volunteers can rest, recharge, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of Namibian farm life.

    Aliments & Boissons

Volunteers receive three balanced meals daily, prepared to support an active farm lifestyle. Meals are wholesome, home-style, and designed to provide the energy needed for physical outdoor work.

Tap water is available at all times and is safe to drink. Coffee is included with breakfast, and fresh fruit is provided when available.

All other drinks outside of breakfast coffee are not included. Additional coffee, soft drinks, specialty beverages, and snacks are excluded from the program fee.

Snacks such as chips, crisps, chocolates, and sweets are available for purchase. Volunteers are also welcome to bring personal snacks if desired.

Meals are shared in a relaxed farm setting, creating an opportunity to connect, unwind, and reflect after a productive day.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

Volunteers are welcome to join the program throughout the year. While there are no strict start dates, it is preferable to arrive on a Sunday or Monday, ideally in the morning.

Upon arrival, volunteers are taken to their accommodation and given a guided tour of the farm, including stables, training areas, and the workspace. This allows time to settle in, unpack, and familiarize themselves with the farm environment. Practical work begins the day after arrival.

Flights can be booked on any day of the week, but early morning arrivals are recommended, as the farm is several hours’ drive from the airport. This ensures volunteers have enough time to reach the farm, settle in, and prepare for the first full day of hands-on farm work.
