    À propos du programme

Join a groundbreaking marine conservation initiative in one of Greece’s most bio-diverse ecosystems. This hands-on internship offers the unique opportunity to contribute to vital research and help protect vulnerable marine species while immersed in the stunning natural beauty of Amvrakikos Wetland National Park.

    Program Overview

Located in the heart of Greece’s Amvrakikos Wetland National Park, this internship places you at the center of essential marine conservation efforts. As a participant, you’ll actively engage in field research, focusing on the monitoring of sharks and rays—key species that play a crucial role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

In addition to species-specific research, interns contribute to broader conservation activities, including local fishery monitoring and biodiversity assessments through scuba diving, snorkeling, stand-up paddling (SUP), and the use of baited remote underwater cameras (BRUVs). No prior scientific background is necessary—just a passion for marine conservation and a desire to make a real impact.

    Key Learning Experiences
    • Marine Biodiversity Research: Collect and analyze data on shark and ray populations, contributing to long-term conservation strategies.
    • Fisheries Monitoring: Visit local ports to gather critical data on bycatch and fishery practices, supporting sustainable marine resource management.
    • Field Surveys: Conduct underwater surveys using snorkeling and BRUVs to monitor species presence and behavior.
    • Drone Surveys: Participate in aerial monitoring to track fishing activities and assess coastal ecosystems.
    • Laboratory Research: Assist with bio analysis and data interpretation to gain insight into species’ diets and ecosystem roles.
    • Community Engagement: Support public awareness initiatives and help foster cooperation with local fishing communities to promote sustainable practices.
    Why Choose This Internship?
    • Work Alongside Experts: Collaborate daily with experienced researchers from iSea, a leading marine conservation organization dedicated to protecting Mediterranean biodiversity.
    • Real Conservation Impact: Directly contribute to ongoing research on some of the Mediterranean’s most threatened species, including the Critically Endangered Spiny Butterfly Ray and Duck Bill Eagle Ray.
    • Hands-On Fieldwork: From diving into the Gulf’s waters to conducting drone surveys, interns are immersed in every aspect of marine conservation.
    • Unique Research Site: Explore Amvrakikos Gulf, a vital nursery ground for several shark and ray species—an unparalleled hotspot for elasmobranch biodiversity.
    • Skill Development: Gain practical experience in research techniques, data collection and analysis, scientific communication, and teamwork in a professional conservation environment.
    Who Should Apply?

    This internship is ideal for:

    • Students or graduates in marine biology, environmental science, or related fields seeking field research experience.
    • Individuals passionate about marine conservation and eager to contribute to the protection of endangered species.
    • Adventurous learners looking for a meaningful travel experience combined with impactful environmental work.
    Program Highlights
    • Critical Conservation Research: Contribute to the By ElasmoCatch Project, which investigates Amvrakikos Gulf’s role as a sanctuary for threatened marine species.
    • Diverse Ecosystems: Work in one of Greece’s most important protected areas, home to over 295 bird species, including rare migratory birds, sea turtles, and the highest density of bottlenose dolphins in the Mediterranean.
    • Engaging Fieldwork: Participate in biodiversity monitoring activities such as cleanups, habitat assessments, and cultural-educational community actions.
    • No Prior Scientific Experience Required: Training is provided for all necessary research techniques, making this program accessible to anyone passionate about marine conservation.
    Impact and Legacy

By joining this internship, you’ll contribute directly to the long-term preservation of Amvrakikos’ unique marine biodiversity, while developing valuable skills that can propel your career in environmental research or conservation. Your work will support the survival of critically endangered species and foster sustainable fishing practices that benefit both wildlife and local communities.
