    À propos du programme

Transcaucasian Trail International Volunteer Program (IVP) – Armenia 2026.

The TCT International Volunteer Program (IVP) in Armenia offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and maintenance of the Transcaucasian Trail (TCT), while immersing yourself in Armenia’s breathtaking natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Since 2016, international volunteers have played a vital role in building and maintaining the TCT. Hundreds of volunteers from around the world have joined the project to support trail construction and conservation efforts while discovering the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Caucasus region.

The IVP Armenia is designed for people who want to work hard, learn practical conservation skills, and contribute meaningfully to a long-term environmental initiative. Volunteers live and work as part of a close-knit trail crew, led by a dedicated Crew Leader who serves as the primary supervisor and first point of contact throughout the program. After confirmation, participants receive a detailed information packet with travel tips, packing guidance, and logistical details. Participants are responsible for organizing and covering the cost of travel outside the region where they are volunteering.

    Arrival and Orientation

The program usually begins with arrival at the basecamp, a local hostel, or guesthouse, where volunteers meet their team and Crew Leader. On the first day, the schedule includes team-building activities, safety briefings, and an introduction to the project and surrounding area. Volunteers may also take part in cultural activities such as sharing a traditional Armenian meal, learning local dances, or joining a hands-on masterclass led by local hosts.

Once the orientation is complete, the crew transitions to camping in tents for the remainder of the program at remote basecamps with basic shared cooking and common areas. Conditions can include cold nights, high winds, and limited amenities. Participants must bring appropriate camping gear; some equipment may be available for rent, depending on program arrangements. Meals are prepared collectively using basic camp stoves under staff supervision. Food is simple, shared within the group, and includes vegetarian options. Clean drinking water is provided at all times.

    Daily Life and Trail Work

Workdays involve 7–8 hours outdoors building and maintaining sections of the TCT alongside an international crew. Trail work varies depending on project needs and may include construction, maintenance, erosion control, waymarking, and installing signage—all set within Armenia’s diverse and scenic landscapes.

Evenings are generally relaxed and community-oriented. Depending on location and energy levels, volunteers may rest, join optional short hikes, participate in language exchanges, or engage in informal cultural activities such as storytelling, folk music, or traditional dances. Volunteers share everyday responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning, coordinated by the camp manager according to a pre-set daily menu.

At the end of each program, volunteers return to town for a supra dinner, a festive Armenian feast celebrating the team’s work and shared achievements. Participants may depart after the celebration or stay overnight, depending on their travel plans.

    Program Expectations

The IVP requires commitment, responsibility, and adaptability. Trail work takes place in remote wilderness areas where weather, terrain, and local logistics may require plans to change at short notice. Volunteers are expected to approach the experience with flexibility, respect for staff leadership, and a positive, cooperative attitude. Participants who do not follow program rules or staff guidance may be asked to leave.

Crew Leaders are trained in first aid, but medical facilities may be several hours away. Each group carries an emergency communication device, though cell phone service is often unavailable. Volunteers should be comfortable with limited connectivity. The working language is English, with local languages used alongside it. Volunteers work closely with local team members, gaining hands-on experience in trail building and conservation.

    Aliments & Boissons

    Meals & Food

On the first and last days of the program, volunteers enjoy traditional Armenian meals in the meeting point town, offering a taste of local cuisine and hospitality.

Throughout the entire program, all meals and drinks are fully provided by the organization — volunteers do not need to budget for food during the program.

During the camping days, volunteers cook and share meals together at camp under the guidance of the camp manager. Meals are simple, nutritious, and filling, prepared using local ingredients and reflecting regional food traditions.

    • Vegetarian options are always available

    • Clean drinking water is provided at all times

    • Meals are designed to support the physical demands of trail work while creating a strong sense of community

Cooking and eating together is an important part of the volunteer experience and often becomes a highlight of the program.
