A Different Kind of Gap Year in Tanzania
The Diploma of Global Citizenship in Wildlife Conservation – Veterinary & Animal Welfare is an immersive Academy experience based in Arusha, northern Tanzania, combining hands-on animal welfare experience, veterinary exposure, Global Citizenship learning, personal development, cultural immersion and travel.
Think of it as travel, volunteering and learning all rolled into one.
Tanzania becomes home while you live alongside an international Academy cohort and work consistently with a locally led animal welfare organisation and qualified veterinarian. Some days are spent caring for rescued animals at the shelter; others may take you into communities for veterinary outreach, vaccination initiatives, home visits or animal rescues.
Around your placement, you’ll take part in practical workshops, cultural experiences, personal development and a collaborative Legacy Project — while exploring Tanzania through safari, mountains, waterfalls, coffee country, local culture, weekend adventures and, on the 12-week Academy, an included Zanzibar escape.
Alongside the experience, you’ll complete the academic requirements of the relevant Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Wildlife Conservation, giving you an accredited outcome alongside substantial international practical experience.
Inspired by the Folk School Experience:
The Academy takes inspiration from the Scandinavian folk school concept: bringing young people together to live, learn, travel and grow through shared real-world experiences rather than making education something that only happens inside a classroom.
We’ve combined that philosophy with something we know extremely well — ethical international volunteering in Tanzania.
Animal welfare is particularly interesting within this context because attitudes towards animals can vary enormously between cultures. Arriving with good intentions doesn’t automatically mean we understand the challenges facing animals, owners or local welfare organisations.
That’s why we provide structured Global Citizenship education alongside your placement, helping you explore cultural perspectives, ethics, sustainability, conservation, public health, root causes and responsible international engagement.
The goal isn’t to tell you what to think. It’s to give you the experience and tools to look deeper, question assumptions and understand the world you’re experiencing firsthand.
Your Veterinary & Animal Welfare Placement:
At the heart of your Academy experience is your placement with a local animal welfare organisation and qualified veterinarian in Arusha.
The majority of shelter work involves dogs and cats rescued following abandonment, injury, illness, neglect or mistreatment. Some need everyday care and socialisation, while others require medical recovery, physical rehabilitation or behavioural support before they can eventually be rehomed.
Your work may include feeding, walking dogs, cleaning, bathing animals, caring for puppies, enrichment, socialisation, behaviour work, rehabilitation and supporting animals during recovery.
You’ll also have opportunities to accompany the veterinary team into the community. Depending on current cases, this may involve home visits, vaccination campaigns, preventative healthcare, rescue operations, community education and treatment of sick or injured animals. Outreach can involve dogs and cats as well as donkeys, cows and other animals.
Most of the work on this project is outreach based making every day different, exciting and full of new experiences - making it one of the favourite project of volunteers.
Because this is a real animal welfare organisation, your days are shaped by the animals and communities requiring support rather than a fixed volunteer itinerary.
Animal Welfare Is About People Too
Rescuing an animal can change that animal’s life. Sustainable animal welfare also asks why the animal needed rescuing in the first place.
Access to affordable veterinary care can be limited, vaccination coverage remains important for diseases such as rabies, shelters operate with finite resources, and attitudes towards companion animals may differ considerably from those participants are accustomed to at home.
Creating lasting improvement therefore involves more than rescue. It requires preventative healthcare, vaccination, responsible ownership, education, trust and culturally appropriate community engagement.
This placement gives you the opportunity to understand animal welfare as something connected to people, communities, economics, culture, public health and the environment.
Support Local Professionals, Don’t Replace Them:
Our approach is built around strengthening the work of people already creating change in Tanzania.
You’ll work under the guidance of the local animal welfare team and qualified veterinarian. Your responsibilities depend on your skills, experience and the needs of the animals currently in care.
You do not need to be studying veterinary science to participate. Animal welfare requires far more than clinical procedures, and general care, exercise, cleaning, enrichment, rehabilitation, socialisation and outreach all make valuable contributions.
At the same time, participants without veterinary qualifications are not treated as veterinarians simply because they are volunteering abroad. Veterinary and medical activities are undertaken only where appropriate and under professional supervision.
Become Part of the Organisation:
One of the greatest advantages of the Academy is time.
During your first weeks, you’ll learn shelter routines, safety and animal-handling expectations, meet the veterinary team and begin understanding individual animals and their needs.
As your experience develops, you’ll become increasingly confident supporting everyday care, rehabilitation, enrichment and outreach while beginning to understand the broader challenges facing the organisation.
You stop simply seeing “a shelter full of dogs” and start recognising individual animals, understanding their histories and seeing how rescue, veterinary care, rehabilitation, adoption, education and prevention fit together.
That consistency allows you to move beyond a short animal-volunteering experience and become a genuinely useful additional member of the team.
Global Citizenship in the Real World:
Your placement becomes a practical classroom for exploring much bigger questions.
What does ethical volunteering mean in animal welfare? How do we advocate for change without assuming our cultural perspective is the only correct one? Why might veterinary care be inaccessible? How are animal health and human health connected? What role do economics, education and culture play? And is rescuing animals enough if nothing changes the circumstances causing them to need rescue?
Through interactive Global Citizenship workshops, you’ll explore animal welfare, conservation, One Health, sustainability, ethics, cultural perspectives, capacity building and community-led change.
The learning becomes powerful because you’re not discussing these ideas hypothetically. You’re experiencing the realities behind them every week.
Work Towards a Meaningful Legacy Project:
As your understanding grows, you’ll work collaboratively with the local team towards a Legacy Project responding to something they identify as genuinely useful.
Depending on current priorities, this might involve animal enrichment systems, adoption resources, vaccination awareness, responsible pet ownership materials, community education, shelter-care systems, rehabilitation resources or support for outreach campaigns.
The project isn’t predetermined.
You’ll first listen, observe and understand. Then you’ll develop something with the organisation, not for it, trial it where appropriate, gather feedback and create a sustainable handover.
The objective is not to leave behind something impressive for a photograph. It’s to contribute something practical, culturally relevant and useful after you leave Tanzania.
Personal Growth, Culture & Adventure:
The Academy isn’t only about what you contribute. It’s also about what happens to you while living far outside what is familiar.
Weekly personal-development and reflection sessions explore confidence, resilience, independence, identity, values, empathy, communication, leadership and cultural adjustment.
You’ll learn practical Swahili, experience Tanzanian food and culture and learn from local professionals, community partners and guest speakers.
And because you’re spending your gap year in Tanzania, travel is intentionally part of the experience.
You’ll explore northern Tanzania through regular adventures involving waterfalls, coffee country, cultural communities, hot springs, cycling, local food, Mount Meru, the Kilimanjaro region and more. You’ll also experience safari, which has particular relevance to this pathway as you explore wildlife, conservation, tourism and human-animal relationships from another perspective.
The 12-week Academy also includes a Zanzibar excursion, swapping northern Tanzania for Swahili coastal culture, tropical beaches and the Indian Ocean.
Live the Experience Together:
Academy participants arrive on set intake dates, meaning you’ll experience Tanzania alongside a cohort of young people completing different internship pathways.
You’ll live together at our Academy home in Arusha and come together throughout the week for workshops, cultural activities, adventures, meals and social events.
There’ll be games and movie nights, Thursday socials, dinners, weekends away and plenty of spontaneous plans — alongside enough free time to explore Arusha, relax and create your own experience.
The friendships and ordinary moments of living abroad together often become just as memorable as the headline adventures.
Finish With Experience You Can Carry Forward
By the end of the Academy, you’ll have gained practical exposure to animal welfare, veterinary outreach, animal behaviour and rehabilitation, rescue, preventative healthcare, community education, One Health and cross-cultural approaches to animal welfare.
You’ll also develop broader skills in teamwork, adaptability, communication, critical thinking, cultural awareness, independence and responsible international engagement.
For anyone considering future study or careers involving veterinary science, animal care, animal behaviour, wildlife conservation, zoology, public health, One Health or related fields, this can provide particularly valuable international exposure — but you don’t need to have your future figured out before arriving.
It’s not just an animal welfare placement. It’s not just a course. And it’s definitely not just a holiday.
It’s a travel, volunteering and learning experience all in one — combining hands-on animal welfare, an accredited Global Citizenship qualification and the adventure of actually living in Tanzania.
