One, Two... Tree! is a non-profit organisation aiming to make English accessible to support empowered, entrepreneurial and organised communities in Central America.
Who we are?
One, Two... Tree! was founded in 2013 with a mission to offer further educational opportunities, and therefore also a more promising future, to children all over Central America. We opened our first project in Nicaragua, where the NGO’s impact rapidly grew over the following 6 years, up until 2019, when, with heavy hearts, we made the difficult decision to close it due to political unrest.
Luckily, we were able to apply our learnings from Nicaragua to our projects in Guatemala and Mexico, established in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Both of these were thriving, and due to the pandemic, had to stop our work for two years.
We were able to reactivate our project in Guatemala in 2021 and are now excited and grateful to see it grow, but we need a lot of hands to keep it growing ♥
The team
One, Two...Tree! is unique in that we are all volunteers. Pedro, the founder, decided to create this small project back in 2012 after an inspiring trip to Nicaragua. He supports the coordinator and volunteers from Vigo, Spain. Carmela, our coordinator in Guatemala for 2022, decided to come and volunteer led by her passion in connecting with other people and cultures while giving back. She lives in Santiago Atitlán and will make you feel at home and inspired to go on teaching!
What do we do?
We collaborate with local organisations to use their premises and introduce English classes through volunteer work. This allows us to get involved in local educational systems and local initiatives, reaching a large number of kids and adults through a sustainable and flexible cost model that can be scaled up or down in response to the community’s needs at any given moment.
Where we work?
We are currently working in Santiago Atitlán (Guatemala) one of the many villages around Lake Atitlán (4h drive from Guatemala City and ot far from Antigua).
Surrounded by volcanoes and coffee plantations, Santiago is a Maya Indigenous village with around 60,000 inhabitants. It is one of the mosth authentic villages in the area where tourism hasn't transformed the village much. Santiago is a very artistic village with a rich tradition on weaving and embroidery. Santiago and the villages around Lake Atitlán are very safe, although the usual precautions apply.
future.
Why choose us?
Volunteering in Central America is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will not only give you practical teaching skills, but also a more holistic outlook on education. This will be an opportunity for you to immerse yourself into the local culture, meet passionate volunteers from across the globe, make new friends, and learn more than you give in the end.
You will have a support network while being here, feeling part of a family, with access to a wide range of activities to explore the area, experience the local culture, and meet new people and community projects. This will be a great experience too to master your Spanish and English as you will be working bilingually all day long!
You will improve your teamwork, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills as well as any other professional skill you would like to hone while staying here. We love proactivity and self-development and will make sure to offer you opportunities to help you in your self and professional development journey.
We offer recommendation letters, certificates of your volunteer stay, and Linkedin recommendations for all those who work with us. If you are staying for a long period (eg three months or more), we will be happy to contact your university and arrange for this work to be considered as an internship for your studies. Don’t hesitate to contact us for any further information.
