During your volunteer program in Bolivia, you either work in a center for disabled children and adolescents or in a psychiatric ward. Regarding your preferences, you are welcome to express your expectations.
The Center for Disabled Children and Adolescents is a non-profit organization and helps both the children and their often very poor families. A special concern of the organization is to support single mothers of disabled children. Most of the children who benefit from the center come from the rural areas around Sucre. The goal of the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists is taking care of the children and to help the little patients wherever they can. They are understanding, friendly and always have a smile on their faces. In these institutions volunteers of all kinds are needed, but especially physiotherapists!
Volunteers from abroad have the opportunity to work in the following areas: in the boarding school, with therapy sessions, in the day care center or in the own school project.
If you prefer to work in the medical sector, psychiatric work is a potential alternative to working in the center. At the moment doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and medical students are taking care of about 400 patients (number may change). There is also a ward dedicated to elderly patients. There you would help the patient with the food intake, walk them with their wheelchairs or walkers, read from the newspaper, help with washing, etc.
Each of these institutions is located in the city of Sucre or in the surrounding area. Sucre is located in the south of Bolivia, about 2800 meters above sea level and is both the capital and the judicial headquarters of the country. Sucre is known for its unique cultural wealth, which is particularly reflected in its colonial architecture.
Be aware that most of the project sites in Bolivia are rather poor and overcrowded with children and therefore the environment in which you will work is not always easy and well organized. You should be humble, friendly, understanding and warm-hearted.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of
volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as
self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these
tasks.
Sucre is the constitutional and historical capital of Bolivia. Known as the White City because of the color of its colonial buildings. Sucre keeps much of the history of Bolivian independence. Sucre is a city of colonial towers, buildings and churches. It really conserves many colonial buildings and an interesting history. Visitors enjoy walking through its streets, visiting squares, local markets and museums.
In Sucre you will find plenty of restaurants and bars to socialize and to meet up with friends.
In the surroundings of Sucre you can find hiking trails for visitors and also rocks for climbers. You can visit mountains and waterfalls as well as indigenous communities and local markets. Also, the old mining town of Potosi is a must see!
Every effort is made to ensure that your stay abroad in Sucre is as pleasant as possible. Therefore accommodations are carefully chosen and regularly assessed. During your volunteer program in Bolivia, you will live with a Bolivian host family who gives you the opportunity to practice and improve your Spanish language skills and to immerse yourself in the country's culture. Accommodation includes half-board (breakfast and lunch), as well as laundry service once a week.
Half-board is provided (breakfast, dinner)
The volunteer work can be joined throughout the year. The start and end date can be set flexible, according to your availability and travel plans. Ask our experienced staff to coordinate your participation in this meaningfull volunteer project.
